About Lee Cooke Childs

I was a Landscape Architect and my husband an Architect and the house was unfinished, needing just the kind of work we could happily complete. We and our passel of kids built the stone wall, laid the patio and expanded the gardens. We got recycled (hard southern pine) from Fall River industrial buildings for the floors and recycled hard maple for the woodwork. Maury blew out the wall on the meadow side and designed and built in the cut glass window. He designed the ship's ladder to the upper floor of the "L"

He enclosed the chimney and we recently installed a new high efficiency wood stove. We had fun shopping for the paintings and tiles. The watercolor of Quicksand Pond was done by him as was the revovation of the Massachuseets Supreme Court and Social Law Library and Monshire Museum in Norwich, Vermont. The house worked its magic for many happy years.

Lee Cooke Childs purchased this house in 1983

Why Lee Cooke Childs chose Rhode Island Coastal

We fell in love with Little Compton after searching all over New England and the Islands for an oasis to spend time together with the whole family, a passel of kids who came from our previous marriages engaged in family building. We needed a place with a short, low traffic drive from Boston so we could come and go easily. The incomparable countryside, great beaches, and a superb one-stop supermarket won us over.

What makes this house unique

Explore the unspoiled countryside with the five bicycles available. Take a leisurely walk or bike ride to Goosewing Beach for the afternoon. Gaze across the sprawling meadow just outside your back door. Then stretch out on the patio and watch the sunset over Quicksand Pond.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Sadly we have no plans to return to LC this summer. Best of luck with the rental. It's absolutely serene where you live."

Gorgeous setting, beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful house built by an architect . . . lots of light inside and a great place to bring the kids. Loft bedrooms are great fun for children. The view is bucolic.

Damp

  • 2 of 5

The property was well worn, musty, and not cleaned as described. The grounds were weedy. Disapointing.

Owner's Response: Always glad to have feedback. We made a mistake this year allowing a wedding party without someone other than the probably overwhelmed groom in charge of exiting the property. They were not out in time. The cleaners had a hard time of it. This will not happen again. There will always be hours open between guests for the cleaners to do a proper job. Sorry! Re:"Weedy" This is the country. The yard is mowed regularly professionally all season. The abutting meadows are held in common as bird sanctuary. The Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy have rights here and the Norfolk Hunt Club this fall.
