This Cottage on the inland East Lake is perfect for the family looking for the classic cottage experience in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The cabin is just about 90 minutes West of the Mackinac Bridge, 7 hours from the Metro Detroit area and 9 hours from Chicago. The amenities from home, coupled with the beautiful view of East Lake makes for a perfect get-away. Eat inside at the wooden table and sleep together in the comfy loft.
Enjoy fishing on the 120 acre East Lake either from the dock or the rowboat that is provided with the cabin. The walk-out basement with an easy access 1/2 bathroom makes it convenient to walk into the cabin from your campfire. The cabin is also within walking distance to a little store. As with all of our properties, pets are considered-- just ask. Linens and towels are provided as well as basic paper products. Bring your family and enjoy the fun of relaxing in the outdoors. Cook outside, eat s'mores over the fire, fish, bring a book, and just have fun.
The East Lake Cottage is ideal for couples, or for a small family. It's definitely not a convenient place for 2 couples due to the fact that we only have 1 queen sized bed and 3 twin beds, all the in the wide open loft. Multi-generational travel can be challenging with the natural inclines heading to the entryway door and down to the lake.
Open loft upstairs- 1 queen-size bed and 3 twin-size beds.

The East Lake Cottage is right in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The cottage is within a couple hours drive to Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Pictured Rocks National Park and Oswald's Bear Ranch.
A great cottage at the right price. Simple, clean, and all the basics you need for a fun vacation connecting with your family or friends. I love the deck overlooking East Lake. The lake is great for boaters who are not comfortable in the bigger lakes. I also love that you have your own space, yet still a cottage-around-the-lake experience. There is an empty lot next door, so that makes it feel even more spacious.
The property was well maintained. This, however, is not a one bedroom. There is sleeping for 5 in an open loft upstairs: no door. The water smelled of strong sulphur the entire week, which was very unpleasant for washing dishes & showering, forget about trying to drink it. The pier was two crooked planks into a bed
On the bright side. The neighborhood is in a perfect location for seeing many U.P. Attractions. The small Bear Den store at the end of the neighborhood is very convenient and it's open 24 hours. All of the neighbors we encountered were friendly, which is typical of the U.P.
This cabin had a great central location for our trip to the eastern UP! It was an hour to Munising and an hour to Sault Ste MarieMarie which made it a nice central location.
The kids loved the rowboat! The cabin was nice and peaceful.
The only thing that kept us from giving it 5 stars was that the water had a funny taste/smell.
The Freshwater Vacations folks were great to work with and I would recommend this cabin to anyone!
If you are looking for a peaceful getaway, this is a great location. There are other houses close by, but overall it was very quiet. The cabin suited our needs, as we were out sightseeing during the daylight hours, using the cabin mainly to sleep and eat.
I would suggest bringing the following items, as they were not supplied:
1. Despite the rental agreement indicating that we could use any condiments/supplies in the caption, we were displeased to arrive and realize there were none. We had purchased all of our food below the bridge to save money and would have added ketchup, mustard, cooking spray, etc. to our list had we known it would not be in the cabin. (There also was not a toaster, no toast with our eggs). The agreement also stated that there was a barbecue that we could use, perfect for our burgers and chicken we had purchased - however, there was no lighter fluid.
2. Bring your own toilet paper!! (Luckily, we did do this) However, when we first arrived to the cabin, it had not yet been unpacked from our vehicle. When I opened the pre-packaged roll of toilet paper sitting in the bathroom, mouse poop spilled all over the floor! It was very unpleasant, to say the least.
3. Bring a trolling motor if you plan to use the boat. The oars are incredibly squeaky and there was quite a bit of wind on the lake.
All in all, it was a good trip and it is the U.P, so it is what we were expecting for a cabin up north. Check-in and out was very easy.
Fishing trip went well, we caught blue Gill, sun fish and small mouth bass. Lake seemed to be same depth throught. Cabin has all items needed on stay. Beds were comfortable. Good location to surrounding attractions.
This great cabin provided an excellent place to stay during our whirlwind tour of the UP. We had no issues at all, other than we realized that the fishing rods in the basement were inoperable. We had forgotten ours at home. Very minor issue as we still were able to get the boat in the water and row row row the boat, gently across the lake.
I would recommend this place to anyone looking to tour the UP or simply get away from the hustle and bustle of the life as a "Troll" under the bridge. :)
East Lake cottage was recommended to us from a relative and we loved it here! The cottage was very clean and well-maintained. We enjoyed fishing on East Lake and the view was just beautiful! Everything that we needed was there for us, so that made our experience very relaxing! I would highly recommend East Lake cottage to people looking for a fun relaxing getaway! Great place for families! We can't wait to go back!
