Aloha , We are the caretakers of Maka Nui of which we are privileged to do. We have been on property for 18 years & lived on the Big Island for 25 . So feel free to call us with any questions you might have & we would be happy to help.
The Owner purchased this house in 2005
Maka Nui is country but close enough (15-20 minutes) to night life . It has all the stores to get supplies here & great restaurants so we get the best of both worlds.
First are the mascots Happy & Bamboo (dogs) They love to meet new folks as is always a chance to get treats! Then the sounds of birds & palms rustling in the breeze. Of course the pool & fruits are always a plus! And we are always around to answer any questions. As the pool /gardeners & coffee workers there is always something to do.
Over the years, we’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to stay in some lovely villas during our travels, but I must say that the sight that met us when we first opened the stained-glass front door of Maka Nui nearly took our breath away. It is an exceptionally lovely home – with ornate furnishings and exquisite artwork, a fabulous Jacuzzi tub, a huge double shower, a well-appointed kitchen, and a wonderfully comfy king-size bed.
The beautiful, rambling interior is surrounded by a screened-in lanai that looks out across the green hillside down onto Kealakekua Bay. We so enjoyed our evenings on the lanai reading – a delightful cool breeze blowing up from the sea, the faint song of the coqui competing with the Hawaiian music we had softly playing in the background.
The grounds are gorgeous: acres of coffee trees, fruit trees, and fragrant flowers, with a much-appreciated impeccably-maintained swimming pool next to the house.
Candi was such a gracious, considerate host, and welcomed us with a lovely basket of fruit, coffee, and chocolate macadamias. She is such a delightful, friendly soul – immediately there if we needed something or had a question, but otherwise completely respected our privacy.
We loved this part of the island – so very lush and tropical. Maka Nui is very private, very quiet, and very safe. Located down from the Captain Cook area, on Napo’opo’o road, it is off the beaten path, yet not very far from good beaches, good snorkeling, shopping, sightseeing, etc. We SO enjoyed our stay there!
My wife and I, our two daughters, their partners and two grandchildren all stayed here for the most wonderful week. The house is outstanding with a huge wrap-around porch and each of the four bedrooms had its own bathroom. The kitchen is super equipped and stocked with spices, oils etc. We all loved the pool, kids most of all. This area of the island has everything close by; beaches, restaurants, stores, historic sites, coffee farms and Kailua is only 25 minutes away. The manager is next door and very friendly and helpful. We couldn't have been happier. The worst part was having to leave.
We had seen the pictures on vrbo.com, but our group of 6 adults (ages 18-60) was blown away by the house, the grounds, and the view! During our two-week stay, we spent many hours on the lanai soaking in the view and it is gorgeous! Everything about our stay at Maka Nui was exceptional, and that was in large part because of our very gracious and hospitable caretaker, Candi. She anticipated our every need before we could think of it. The welcome basket and flowers from the grounds were such a nice touch! The house is beautiful, well designed, and is very spacious. Our group likes to cook and we were pleased to find the kitchen well stocked. We enjoyed snorkeling at Manini Beach Park, and Two Step which are both a short distance from the house. We had good food at the Poke Shack, Patz Pies, the Coffee Shack, and Teshimas - we actually hit all of these places twice! One of the highlights of our trip was helping Candi to harvest the coffee beans, and the best part was spending time with this dear lady. We will definitely be back, but just can't get back fast enough!
What a wonderful spot. You can hang out at the pool all day or do all the touristy stuff there is to do. Still can't get over the change in flora and fona in such a short distance, it was amazing. Candi was very helpful with everything from where to go to the beach to where to get band aids. Captain Cook is such a nice place, and the people were all very nice. I love the big island and am looking forward to coming back
We just finished a 1 week stay at Maka Nui and none of us wanted to leave. 10 people including 2 babies. An amazingly wonderful family gathering. Candi, our hostess, was great. She meet us and brought us lovely mangos off the trees and coffee from the property. the views from the screened in patios are breathtaking. It is a short drive down to "2 step" (great snorkeling) and to a small secluded sand beach (a little dirt road driving discourages large groups). great kitchen. nice pool. close to Kona, not a bad drive to the volcanos. good close food includes de Poke shack, big jakes BBQ, Patz Pies (pizza plus) and Hong Kong Chop Soey
This was by far the best family gathering experience ever! The property and the house were amazingly welcoming(as well as the Hostess Candi). Almost, I say almost could have just stayed on property for the whole time. There was too much fantastic snorkeling down the way to stay at Maka Nui all the time. Life is good thanks so much Maka Nui and Candi!!
