Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8); Barn holds 100 guests

Our house is the only home in our beautiful 18 acre estate nestled beneath a high ridge on the banks of the New River, which creates a wonderful sense of privacy along with the sounds and scenery of nature-- the rush of the river water below and the sigh of the wind through the trees above.

This is a birder’s paradise, with hiking trails in either direction on the river banks, or for the more adventurous, up to the top of the ridge. Other hiking trails are nearby, as well as floating or kayaking outfitters to assist you. You can also fish from your own private bridge where the trout like to hide, or hire a local guide for fly fishing. During ski season, the slopes at Beech Mountain or Sugar are only 45 minutes away; Hawksnest and Appalachian even closer. The historic town of Todd is in your backyard, Boone is only 7 miles away (10 minutes), West Jeffersion is 10 miles away (15 mins), and Blowing Rock is 15 Miles (20 minutes). Interesting shopping, including outlet malls, quaint artistic areas and local color, Appalachian State University, are all within a short drive. But you may not want to leave your porch!

Nothing has been spared for your comfortable accommodations. This house has been completely remodeled: new carpet, hardwood floors, all bathrooms, and entire kitchen. On the main entry level there is a spacious living room with stone fireplace and 42” flatscreen TV and DVD player, a dining room seating 6 - 8, and a wonderful kitchen with gas cook top, double ovens, wet bar, and island with seating for two. There is a large gas grill on the main deck, with decks and porches on every level overlooking the river.

Your four bedrooms and four baths are configured as follows: On the main entry level one queen bedroom and sunroom, one full bath with walk-in shower, separate Jacuzzi tub, and double sinks—perfect for anyone who does not do stairs. Upstairs there are two large queen bedrooms and two full baths. Downstairs there is a large den with a sleep sofa (very comfortable) and a full bath.

This lower level is where the kids of all ages can hang out. There is a 42” flatscreen TV with DVD and ability to hook up your own games, Wii, etc., a game table for board games, cards, etc., a computer desk with Hughes Net (wireless or plug in) for your lap top or computer games. On this level there is also a kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave, laundry facilities, and two-car garage.

For an additional charge, renters can reserve The New River Barn to host family gatherings, weddings, or other types of gatherings (capacity 150). The River Barn is available only to renters of the house.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Just wanted to drop you a short note to say how much we enjoyed the house on the river. Your parents have really got a wonderful place there. It was instrumental in our enjoyment of the area and will be a big part of the memories that the kids made this last weekend. We hope to be able to visit again someday as we are always wanting to visit the mountains and I can't think of a better place to stay.

Great retreat & terrific property

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful place to getaway in the mtns. House is very well appointed, including a large, loaded and comfortable kitchen. Great for making meals - has everything you need.

Pros - house is well kept and clean. All bedrooms are setup nicely. Decks are wonderful and have a bunch of seating - great to sit out while looking down on and listening to the river. Owners have really set the house up nicely - many nice touches that make it comfy and smooth: eg- good seating in living room, fully outfitted kitchen, two lighters for grill & firepit, some games/puzzles, multiple flashlights setup on constant plug-in chargers on both floors, paper goods and hand soaps throughout house, and other bits. But best part of this property for us was the wide open riverfront grassy yard and the killer fire pit down there. Had a fire every night - enjoyed the stars above and river running by. (While there was a huge stack of wood nearby, it wasn't split and was pretty wet, so not really usable - get some split bundles at store nearby and you can drive them right to the fire pit on the lower driveway). Also the private bridge over the river is quite cool - an unexpected fun thing.

Cons - this wasn't a con for us as we didn't mind the stairs or distance, but the yard/river/firepit are a ways down from the house. Lots of steps to get down there. We had two kids 10 & 6 and no issues, but if you had younger kids or less mobile/fit people, getting to yard/firepit would not be easily done. The other con worth mentioning is the wifi. Owner rightfully set expectations that it is slow, but it seems like if you can get cable tv and phone why not decent speed internet? It's a little like 1999 dial-up unfortunately. And - again fully disclosed - no cell coverage at all. Not a huge deal, but be prepared to be really unplugged (not a terrible thing actually). Lastly, we found the beds to be adequate but always wonder when rental homes don't have king beds, which everyone wants. Main level bed seemed small for 2 (maybe a double or small queen?) and not bad but not super comfortable. Upstairs beds much more comfortable. Didn't use lower level sofa bed.

All in all a wonderful place that is well appointed, clean and well organized. All of us loved it, esp the kids. Hope to return!

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your time at the house. Thank you for the review. We wish we could do better with the cell service and the wifi, but we do our best with what we have. Unfortunately, satellite internet is the only option in our area, and it is slow and limited. Since cell service is limited as well, we have a land line with free long distance calling in the US. Glad to hear you would like to return! Thanks again, Beth

Perfect vacation home

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful with plenty of space to spread out or get together. Since the weather was good, we spent most of our time on the big deck overlooking the New River with the tubers and canoers passing by. The kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of room for a group to cook. While there were only six of us, it would be a perfect spot for four couples. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return.

mountains and river

  • 5 of 5

We had an incredible time at this house. We went for peace and quite and got more than we could've imagined. The river is amazing and crystal clear. We had a fire every night down by the fire pit. The absolute best view of the stars in the sky i have ever seen. the wood burning fire place inside the house was great. The kitchen was huge. we rented canoes from wahoo's down the river a little ways. Ian was the guy who set us up and dropped us off. Although he told us that it was a 2 hour float down the river it was under an hour but still really fun. This house was perfect and we will be back!

Florida Family

  • 5 of 5

My family including husband, 3 dogs and 3 grown kids had a wonderful vacation at this upscale house. We cooked gourmet meals almost every evening in the well stocked kitchen. We drove upstream about 5 miles to a kayak put in and drifted back to the house for take out but we had a truck and enought people to do this ourselves. I believe you could do this thru the local outfitters there.

Taking the kayaks out at the house was just a little bit of a challenge. The banks of the river are about 6' so we had ropes tied to help us out. A stair there would make things easy.

The road in front of the house, across the river, was very quiet. Traffic is not a problems there.

The house was immaculate, the furniture and carpets are all exquisite and the beds are very comfortable to sleep in. With 4 baths, no one every had to wait to take a shower.

We enjoyed visiting surrounding towns: Todd with the pot bellied pig Petunia wandering around unpenned, West Jefferson with good restaurants and markets, and of course, Boone with just about everything you need. We want to come back!
