About Gary Gallaher
We had visited The Sea Ranch many times over the years and wanted to come more often. We purchased the Redwood Cottage in 1998, spent some time putting our imprint on it and have enjoyed sharing it with many visitors since then.
Gary Gallaher purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Gary Gallaher chose Sea Ranch
The 'walk-in cabins' are a unique group of small but well designed homes with a minimal footprint in keeping with the original Sea Ranch concept of living lightly on the land. Each is surrounded by 'commons' rather than having lots which are contiguous with their neighbors. They have everything you need in one open space, plus a loft for sleeping. When we had visited The Sea Ranch we typically stayed in one of the conventional Sea Ranch houses. They were lovely, but we kept thinking all we need is 'a little cabin in the woods' . When we learned about these unique homes it just seemed right for us.
What makes this Cottage unique
Waking up to see the towering redwoods through two huge skylights is always amazing. One of us is a hiker (former trail runner) who loves to hike the many trails right from the cabin. One of us enjoys the peacefulness of the forest with the ocean in sight. We both look forward to relaxing in the spa and watching the stars overhead. A short drive takes us to easy access to the bluff trail to be close to the always changing ocean.

A peaceful retreat, with every detail thoughtfully considered by the owners
Gary and Elaine's Redwood Cottage is a peaceful, relaxing retreat. In addition to its beautiful setting (and yes, as other reviewers have said, the ocean view is even better in the pictures!), the cottage is cozy, clean, and incredibly well appointed. Notably, the provisions include items many rental owners do not provide: Kleenex, paper towels, napkins, hangers, night lights, etc. Staying there, you have the sense that the owners have really thought about all of the little details that contribute to making a vacation rental welcoming and comfortable (which is something you don't even get in many hotels!). Gary went out of his way to provide helpful information about the area and make himself available for questions, and even checked in about the heating the day we arrived (it was forecast to be cold, and they have been having some trouble with the propane heater, but multiple other heating options were provided, and it was very comfortable). Hiking around the cottage was wonderful, and it is an easy trip into Gualala for provisions. I look forward to staying here again! My only regret is that we were only there for two nights--I'll aim for a longer stay next time.
We are gratified when our guests feel well cared for. Renting a vacation property from the owner, instead of a corporate Agent, should lead to a better experience. Since we use the cabin ourselves (not as often as we would like) we try to look at it from the renter's perspective. If we discover there is something missing that we need we know a renter may need it too, so we try to provide/change/add whatever that is. It helps a lot that we have an excellent housekeeper who not only cleans very thoroughly, but also monitors supplies, etc. A rotating cleaning crew from an agency often doesn't do that.
We can't take credit for the efficient design, but in the 20 years we have owned it we have tried to take good care of it.

Great place for a relaxing weekend. Loved eating meals with a view of the ocean and seeing the redwoods from the bed.
Wonderfully relaxing weekend!
Such a lovely weekend in Sea Ranch! The home was perfectly suited for relaxing indoors or going outside for a hiking adventure. Close to highway, but quiet. A short walk to the beach and a path through the redwoods was right outside the door! Would recommend this location for anyone looking for a quiet, reflective weekend on the northern California coast.
had a wonderful romantic getaway here for valentines day. The owner answered and was helpful when I called him during our stay to ask a question. Would highly recommend for couples or small family : )
We had a great stay at Redwood Rise
A redwood oasis
This place is perfect for a romantic getaway. Immaculately clean, functional, and every detail is well-thought out. We have stayed here twice and look forward to our next.
Renters have access to all Sea Ranch facilities which are available only to owners and guests/renters. The facilities include 3 pools, saunas, tennis counts and many miles of well maintained private hiking trails, both near the ocean and though the redwood and pine/fir forests.
