We had visited The Sea Ranch many times over the years and wanted to come more often.
We purchased the Redwood Cottage in 1998, spent some time putting our imprint on it and have enjoyed sharing it with many visitors since then.
Gary Gallaher purchased this cottage in 1998
The 'walk-in cabins' are a unique group of small but well designed homes with a minimal footprint in keeping with the original Sea Ranch concept of living lightly on the land. Each is surrounded by 'commons' rather than having lots which are contiguous with their neighbors.
They have everything you need in one open space, plus a loft for sleeping.
When we had visited The Sea Ranch we typically stayed in one of the conventional Sea Ranch houses. They were lovely, but we kept thinking all we need is 'a little cabin in the woods' .
When we learned about these unique homes it just seemed right for us.
Waking up to see the towering redwoods through two huge skylights is always amazing.
One of us is a hiker (former trail runner) who loves to hike the many trails right from the cabin.
One of us enjoys the peacefulness of the forest with the ocean in sight.
We both look forward to relaxing in the spa and watching the stars overhead.
A short drive takes us to easy access to the bluff trail to be close to the always changing ocean.
We enjoyed our 4-day stay in this cozy setting. I give very high marks to the owner for providing much helpful information before our arrival, including details on road conditions-- of concern to us because of earlier California storms. The kitchen was the best-equipped vacation rental I've experienced-- so complete that we changed our plans and made all our own meals instead of going out. This is a "walk-in" cabin, with long-term parking about a block away, but the walk was easy; a few yards and half a dozen sturdy and hand-railed steps. Some others we saw required much more walking or stair-climbing.
Sea Ranch has distinct climate zones and this property is in the shaded, big-redwoods area rather than the open grassy meadows nearer the water. It is very quiet and well away from the noise of highway 1, as well as sheltered from most of the wind.
We had a fair amount of rain while we were there (early April) so spent lots of time just gazing out the windows and reading in front of the "pot-bellied" stove. Hiking at that time of year is soggy, but the wildflowers were in bloom everywhere and the creeks running.
Very comfortable, recommended for relaxing.
We loved this place. Cozy, with very interesting architecture, it was so lovely to wake up looking at the trees in the morning. It is obvious the owners take very good care of the place and have put a lot of love into the structure. Some great hikes right out the front door down to the ocean and due to the season and some foggy weather, we saw very few people at the beach or on the trails. This whole neighborhood has a character of its own I have not experienced before. A little bummer no grilling, but the hot tub under the trees more than made up for it. Would definitely stay again.
It was an absolute treat to stay in this Obie Bowman cabin, lovingly restored and tended. It is peaceful, immaculate, and very much feels like sleeping in a tree house. We had a medical emergency and, unfortunately, were only able to stay one of four booked nights before we had to hightail it to the nearest hospital (Santa Rosa). Gary was LOVELY about our hasty exit and did not penalize us for not cleaning up to the extent we normally would. We will be back, and cannot wait.
All I can say is just "wow!" Great little cabin. Very relaxing, quiet and although neighbors are close by, it was extremely private. The only suggestion I would make is to simply upgrade the stereo system so it can stream music through your computer or phone. The TV could also be upgraded. WiFi worked great! Ultimately this isn't a place to go for modern ammentites. It's a place to get away from all of the noise and just take in the tranquility. The skylight in the bedroom was incredible and we gazed at stars each night as we went to sleep. The view from the main room is amazing! The ocean was so blue and vast. The pictures don't do this place justice. It's more than we expected. I will definitely return. With the few small upgrades mentioned we would never leave.
We had a great time. Wonderful unique cabin tucked in the forest with a partial ocean view. It is very well maintained and thoughfully appointed. Owners are very easy to work with.
Renters have access to all Sea Ranch facilities which are available only to owners and guests/renters. The facilities include 3 pools, saunas, tennis counts and many miles of well maintained private hiking trails, both near the ocean and though the redwood and pine/fir forests.
