With many delightful features including little nooks and window seats, this sweet Maine house in Southwest Harbor offers its guests a pleasant place to relax. Set in a pretty neighborhood, only steps away from the village center, and just a short distance further from the harbor, this lovely home, fringed with perennial gardens, also offers a convenient location.
Located on the 'quiet side' of the island, you are a few minutes from hiking Acadia's many trails, swimming in the gorgeous lakes, standing above the majestic fjord (Somes Sound), or walking along the harbor or sea shore. Many of the island's most scenic areas are less than 5 minutes away.
One can walk to the local restaurants(fine dining or casual), coffee house, an excellent local market with wonderful produce and quality meats, fine wine and cheese shop, pharmacy, post office, excellent library and quality gift shopping. One can also walk to the head of the harbor and take the ferry for lunch or a great brunch on cranberry island. Everything is so convenient and scenic here.
This house is a wonderful family home. Both children and adults appreciate the feeling and location of the house.

The Owner purchased this house in 2001
We wanted to live in Southwest Harbor because it is a charming village, with a true working waterfront, and authentic feel. The town has everything, without the t-shirt shops and other tourist traps. Being close to the Harbor was important to us, as well as, being able to walk to the village instead of getting in the car. We wanted to live on a quiet street.
Sitting in the window seat at the table for breakfast is truly a treat. Walking to the Causeway, and the Clairemont Hotel for gorgeous views of the Sound. Taking a drive to the Seawall, going to the tide pools, hiking and swimming - then rewarding yourselves with a nice dinner out just a short walk away.
It is convenient to everything in town, so you don't need to get in the car to post a letter, buy dinner, go out for lunch or coffee, shop for gifts, buy nice wine or cheese, or go to the pharmacy.
The proximity to the ice cream shop and school playground make it fun for families.
You can walk to the town dock and take a ferry to Isleford for a nice meal, or take your bikes along, and bike the island.
Although it is very close to the village, the house is located on a quiet side street.
(from guestbook) We had a lovely week at Wesley House. We really appreciated the suggestions you made on where to go and used them often. It was nice to come back to the peace and quiet here at the house. We made good use of the well-stocked (implements) kitchen and even tried our hand at cooking lobster. (instructions were very helpful) The house is wonderful; great location - close to town and beautifully arranged. We especially enjoyed the window seats and great back porch. Thanks so much for making this house available to us, we had a fun and relaxing trip.
What a great place! This home is so nice and comfortable, very relaxing and so quiet. It is literally 400 feet from Main Street, but it's on a dead end, so it was quiet any time of day. My favorite things about Wesley House are the fireplace, the big kitchen, lots of sunlight with all the windows and it is so comfortable it really felt like home to us. I also liked the big table in the dining area. We spread out our maps and planned our adventures from this spot. We were pleasantly surprised that it is not far from Bar Harbor at all. Gina is so pleasant to deal with. She is prompt with emails and and any questions or special requests. She is a great resource with suggestions/ideas about places to eat, where to rent bikes, ideas for great walks, hikes and even ideas about what to do on a rainy day. The kitchen is fully stocked, there are lots of towels, firewood, blankets, pillows, hot water, books, games. You name it. Just very comfortable with anything you might need. We just loved Acadia and the small town feel of Southwest Harbor. Great place, and Gina is so nice. Rent Wesley House, you will not be disappointed.
All four of us agree that this is the one! We were very comfortable in this house with plenty of space to sleep, relax and unpack. Each bedroom had tons of drawer and closet space with more hangers than you'll know what to do with! The kitchen was wonderful and had everything we needed and more and we all found the window seats (there are three of them in three different rooms) a nice place to escape to read a book, play on an iPad or have a glass of wine while unwinding from the day's adventures. We walked into town most nights for dinner and to pick up supplies for the next day. It was nice to be so close yet hear no road or downtown noises at the house.
It was hot on MDI during our vacation week so most days we could be found at Sand Beach, building sand fortresses, jumping the waves and making new friends. We tried a new hike this summer called Ship Harbor. It was an easy hike compared to what we normally do but we all enjoyed it. Per the kids request (ages 12 and 9) we went back to the family friendly show at ImprovAcadia in Bar Harbor again this year. The comedians are excellent and since the show is based on audience participation, it is different each time. We highly recommend it to all ages!
Gina, the owner, has provided everything you need to make your stay pretty awesome. She also provided us with contact numbers in case there was a problem with the house. We didn't have to use them at all but it's comforting to know help is close by if you need it.
Our family with two kids aged 8 & 5 greatly enjoyed our stay at the Wesley House in Southwest Harbor. We hiked, biked (storing our bikes in the easily-accessible basement), and enjoyed exploring Southwest Harbor and MDI. The house worked very well for us and gave us more room than we needed for our stay. The kids particularly enjoyed the rope swing in the front, spending hours playing. Wesley Avenue is very quiet and also allowed the kids to bike in the street on their own even though the house is within a minute (walking) of "downtown" Southwest Harbor.
Working with Gina (the owner) to rent the house was also very easy. She was definitely ready to provide help should we have needed it (we didn't) and appreciate that she really wanted our stay to be enjoyable.
We would definitely rent again should we return in the future to Mount Desert Island.
We have spent three weeks at Wesley House for each of the past four summers (2011-14), and returned for a brief visit this past winter (2015). On several previous visits to MDI, we'd kept driving into Southwest Harbor for one reason and another. Once we’d identified Southwest Harbor as our favorite place on the island, we decided to stay there. Wesley House is in an excellent location – especially for a family; a grocery store, a bakery / pizzeria, an ice cream parlor (great destination for kids who want a safe, independent adventure), and some fine little restaurants are all within easy walking distance. Each of two town docks is within five minutes’ drive, a short bike ride, or a pleasant walk. A pond about a quarter-mile from the house teems with frogs in summer, and becomes the town skating rink in winter. There is an excellent bike shop – offering rentals, sales, and service – about a half-block from the house.
Wesley House itself is by far the most pleasant, comfortable home we have ever rented for a vacation stay. The house is immaculately clean, and simply but beautifully furnished – maximal comfort, minimal clutter. We especially love the window seats in the kitchen and front foyer; great places to curl up and read! The kitchen is amply stocked and supremely functional; one of the owners is a chef, and it shows. You can really cook here, and we do: great, memorable feasts, built around the mackerel and squid that my husband and kids catch at the dock, locally caught scallops and lobster, vegetables from the farmers’ market and nearby organic farm, and blueberries – some already baked into the excellent pies sold at Sawyer’s Market, some loose, with sour cream and brown sugar . . .. There is a porch deck with a good, working grill, which we also use to cook; a lovely little backyard, ringed with trees; and a small front yard with a rope swing, which our kids love. We do a lot of biking in Acadia when we’re on MDI, and are able to store our bikes in the basement (entered through a door adjacent to the driveway). The bedrooms are comfortably cool at night, and for the occasional August evening with a hint of autumn in the air, there’s a working fireplace and a good stock of firewood.
As for the owners: we cannot imagine better, more attentive hosts. They have been extraordinarily helpful – eager to share the wonders of a place they clearly love, and generous with their time and suggestions.
We had a wonderful stay at Wesley House (July 25-31, 2010). The photos do not do the house justice. We were charmed as soon as we walked in the door and found it to be perfectly suited for our group, which included grandparents, parents and two kids under 5. This was our first experience with vrbo, and it couldn't have been better. The instructions and advice left for us were very helpful, and the owners were readily available to answer any questions. We ended up following a number of the owners' recommendations, including a sailing trip on a Friendship Sloop, dinner at Abels lobster pound and local walks, all of which were great. Everything was well-maintained, the kitchen was well-stocked, and the extras (toys, books, stroller) were great. Our kids loved the rope swing out front, and the location was perfect for us - we didn't have to drive to the little shops, cafes, ice cream and playground - they were all just a short walk away. We loved the feel of Southwest Harbor and were very happy we ended up staying there. We would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative.
