Located in the private community of Benway Landing on the Chain, our lakefront French country cottage was designed by national award winning home designer, Robert Martignoni of Building Science Associates.
Nestled in the woods on a private road, the house is built on a slope and offers views of the lake from the large great room, the master bedroom, the screened porch and the sprawling deck. The floor to ceiling windows in the great room provide plenty of light and add to the spacious feel. The stone (wood burning) fireplace is the focal point in the great room and not only warms the room but provides a romantic ambience on those cold winter nights.
The home features natural pine floors throughout with tile in bathrooms and carpet in upstairs loft. The gourmet kitchen has Jenn-Air appliances, including a gas stove with convection oven and French door style refrigerator with ice maker. The painted custom cabinets contrast the beautiful granite counter tops. There is plenty of storage and all kitchen essentials are provided including a Cuisinart blender, Kitchen Aid mixer, dishes, glasses, serving trays and cookware. The eating area seats six, with an adjoining enclosed screened porch that seats six to eight more guests.
The great room has just been updated with a 50" flat Plasma (HD) TV (DirecTV satellite service), a Blue Ray DVD player and a new stereo receiver with surround sound.
The master bedroom has a queen size iron bed and a closet with drawers and hanging space. The adjoining master bathroom includes a granite vanity, Jacuzzi corner tub, stall shower and linen closet.
The guest bedroom has a full size bed and is right around the corner from the main bathroom which has a granite vanity and stall shower.
The loft upstairs has a sofa bed which pulls out to a queen size bed. We've added a 4" memory foam topper to the mattress for extra comfort. There is a wonderful view of the lake from the loft.
The expansive outdoor deck is approximately 10' x 30'. Enjoy the quiet and serene setting gazing at the lake and surrounding wooded areas. There is a gas grill, Adirondack chairs, and a large table with umbrella which seats six to eight. Guests thoroughly enjoy drinking their morning coffee as the sun comes up on this wonderful deck.
The (unfinished) basement provides additional beds (great for kids) and game area. There are two full size beds, one twin bed and a roll-a-way bed in the basement along with a pool table and foosball table. The new walk out patio provides additional outdoor seating at ground level with easy access to the boardwalk leading to the lake. The fire pit area is conveniently located close to the walk out patio and there is an additional seating area down by the lake.
Attention wildlife enthusiasts! The cottage is located on Benway Lake, which is among the 'Upper Chain of Lakes'. The lakes are perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Paddle through all six lakes on one trip or break this fabulous landscape into day trips. Either way, you are in for a unique kayaking or canoeing experience. We have two one-person kayaks and a canoe for your use, as well as life jackets. Enjoy wildlife such as loons, swans, ducks and turtles. Fish for bass, pike, walleye, and even trout and muskie! We also have a row boat available so if you'd like to bring your own boat motor you can easily attach it.
Please note: There is not a sandy beach at this property, but both Lake Michigan and Torch Lake beaches are just ten minutes away.
The best northern Michigan golf courses are all a short drive away: Bay Harbor, Shanty Creek, The Chief, Hawks Eye, Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, A-Ga-Ming, Antrim Dells and Dunmaglas. The cottage is a great base location for golfer's who enjoy playing a different course each day. Excellent local restaurants include The Blue Pelican in Central Lake, Shorts Brewery in Bellaire and The Rowe in Ellsworth. Classic Pizza in downtown Central Lake has pizza and subs. And, believe it or not, the Central Lake BP gas station on M-88 also has great pizza (order fresh!), smoked chicken and smoked ribs! The local grocery store in Central Lake has most everything you will need to cook at home and if not, the large Family Fare market in Bellaire is a short drive away.

We built our cottage in 2005 as a family retreat and future retirement home. Since our careers moved us out of state, we are unable to visit as often and decided to share it with others. We hope you love it as much as we do!
Margaret purchased this cottage in 2005
After spending many years visiting friends 'up north', we too began to fall in love with the areas natural beauty. We never thought we would find property that was on a lake (my requirement) AND had acreage (Tom's requirement). We purchased ten acres on Benway Lake in 2002 and began to build in 2003. We recently purchased the lot next door adding an additional three acres and lake frontage totaling 220'. We love the location as we feel the west side of Michigan is the most beautiful with its rolling hills, country roads, cherry and apple orchards, wineries and road side markets. We love the location and we love the house! We only wish we lived closer so we could enjoy it more. Our loss is your gain!
Golf in the summer and ski in the winter! What a great location near the best golf courses and ski slopes. Agaming and Shanty Creek are just 30 minutes away; Boyne Highlands, Boyne Mountain and Bay Harbor are just 40 minutes away. Stay home and walk the woods and country roads, sit on the deck with morning coffee, cook to your hearts desire in the wonderful kitchen. You may never want to leave the relaxation of the cottage. If you do venture out, don't miss going up to the picturesque town of Charlevoix on beautiful Lake Michigan, a lovely twenty minute drive northwest. Enjoy great shopping and food including American Spoon, fudge (of course), and ice cream! Another twenty minutes from Charlevoix is beautiful Petoskey, with Harbor Springs just a bit further up along Lake Michigan into Little Traverse Bay. Heading south on M-88 from Central Lake, Bellaire is just twenty minutes. You will find the famous Short's Brewery, recently expanded, a nice coffee shop and an ice cream parlor. Back in Central Lake, pick up a great pizza at the BP gas station or enjoy a nice dinner at the Blue Pelican. Want to go to the beach? A short drive due west (ten minutes) takes you to Torch Lake and Grand Traverse Bay beyond (Barnes Park), where you can lay on the public beach for hours (remember, we do not have a sandy beach at our property). Do you have a special occasion in which a fine dining experience is worthy? Drive no further than Ellsworth (ten minutes) to The Rowe Inn and enjoy their unique menu (reservations suggested). There are plenty of places to go and things to do. Don't forget Sleeping Bear Dunes and Mackinac Island are both day trips from our cottage!
Two years in a row. Love this place and had another great time. Had my Dad's 80th up at the lake with friends and family. Many memories. Thanks again Margaret and Tom!
We spent a week on Benway Lake and had an awesome time. The pictures don't do the place justice. Everything is decorated so nice. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals and entertain. The deck was nice to eat meals on and we used the grill every day. We brought our boat and fished a number of times. We didn't catch a lot of fish but enjoyed the water. We basically fished Benway Lake but plan on venturing out to the other Chain-of-Lakes the next time we rent. The owners were very helpful and accommodating. We are already planning our next visit. Can't wait.
Margaret was an absolute pleasure to work with in planning a brief stay on Benway Lake, even on very short notice! She was very accessible when we had questions.
We loved the spectacular lake views and foliage along with the extreme serenity of the area. We enjoyed the movie selection, cooking meals in the fantastic kitchen, grilling on the patio, and relaxing in the jacuzzi. I can imagine this house would make a great reunion/family gathering spot!
Only wish we would have had more time and better weather to enjoy!
We are frequent VRBO customers and have rented properties from many different owners in numerous states. But, our favorite destination is always the Chain-Of-Lakes near Bellaire. This year, we decided to try a new rental home, and we are so very pleased that we did so.
This beautiful lakefront cottage is everything it claims to be, plus more. The private, peaceful setting is perfect for anyone wanting to get away from the hussle and bustle of their daily lives. The home is well-maintained, clean and spacious. With plush bedding and bathroom linens, it felt like we were staying in 5-star resort. The screened-in porch became our jigsaw puzzle room and the deck, with its stunning view and comfortable seating, was our dining room for the week. I loved the gourmet kitchen and appreciated having every cooking and serving necessity at my fingertips.
The sturdy, modern dock easily accomodated our 18-foot boat and the smooth water of Benway Lake was our playground for early morning water skiing. Afternoons were spent boating up to Ellsworth or down to Intermediate Lake, with sitings of loon and river otters along the way.
I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a private, peaceful lake-side retreat.
We are looking forward to our vacation in this home again next year.
I want to thank you so very much for sharing your beloved home with our family. Your home was amazing. Every detail was so artfully done!!! And every possible kitchen tool was available for our Parisian foodies! We ate most meals on the deck over-looking the lake. The perfect blue sky and warm weather were an added bonus.
We hope we left everything in the same pristine condition as we found it.
My family used the canoe and 2 kayaks several times. Our 7 and 10-year old kids spent most of their free time collecting rocks and catching frogs, toads, caterpillars plus creating a natural habitat for them. Each night they let them go, and started over the next day. Also each night we had a bonfire and made marshmallow smores. Other activities included going hiking at Grass River Natural Area, raspberry picking at King's Orchard, going to an art festival in Alden, and swimming in Lake Michigan and Torch Lake. What fun!!!!
If you want a quality restaurant with a French-trained chef, we recommend LuLu's in Bellaire.
Thanks again for giving our family reunion a perfect setting.
This was a great house for my family of four, my 82 yo mother, and my sister and her daughter. Daily trips to Torch Lake beaches and short drives to Charlevoix. When the day was over, it was comforting coming back to such a beautiful house. Cooking dinners was easy with such a well-stocked kitchen that included plenty of counter space. The deck overlooks the lake and is very private with tall trees where my mother spent most of her time. Wasn't easy getting her off the deck and into the car at the end of the trip! Thanks again.
