This is a classic two story cabin that has been remodeled. The upstairs is the sleeping area with two small open bedrooms, a lofted sleeping area suitable for children and sitting area with fireplace. The downstairs includes a bathroom, kitchen and sitting area and opens onto a full deck with outstanding lake views and privacy. The property sits on the south end of Lake Papakeechie and backs up to the Tri-County game Preserve. This is the hilly end of the lake with heavily wooded lots that create a real sense of solitude. Wifi was installed in 2014.
Lake Papakeechie is a private lake that was created about 100 years ago by combining several smaller lakes. The lake is controlled by an owners' association and there is no public access to the lake. Motors of any kind are prohibited. This ensures a peaceful environment with excellent fishing and safe swimming. The lake is fed by artesian wells and water from the adjacent wetlands of the game preserve. The water is tested annually by the association and is consistently found to be extremely clean.
One is surrounded by nature here. The lake is home to diverse waterfoul and wildlife including swans, geese, ducks, great blue herons, beaver and a bald eagle. Hiking or hunting in the preserve is literally across the road. It feels secluded, yet the Lake Wawasee public boat launch is 5 minutes away.
The cabin is located at the bottom of a steep driveway and there are stone steps to the cabin and lakefront. This may be a consideration for those with mobility issues.

We are from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I am a contractor and my wife is semi-retired after a career in non-profit. We enjoy outdoor activities, travel and family get-togethers. We have two sons who are married and one grandchild.
Pam and Dan Leffers purchased this cabin in 2008
Our family has owned property on Papakeechie for over 40 years. We love the lake and the area. Our family cottage is next door to this cabin and we purchased the cabin to provide extra space when needed and to protect our investment.
This lake is a vacation for the body and the mind. There is no hustle and bustle here, no jet skis roaring by and no waves crashing to shore. The loudest noise we hear are geese flying by or the sound of paddle boats in the water.
Just wanted to drop you a line, we really enjoyed our stay at the red cottage. The fishing was good as well as the weather,we were impressed with the cabin as well, hopefully we can get back next year for a longer stay. Thanks for the opportunity to enjoy your property.
As other reviewers have stated, the owners of this cottage are very gracious and welcoming in every detail of making the experience wonderful. Our daughter, son-in law, and two "city" grandsons, 9 and 10, thoroughly enjoyed their week long vacation. Pam offered their kayaks to the "guys" who became quite adept and comfortable using. Although our grandsons can swim, I am glad we purchased life jackets in advance for their kayaking, and lake enjoyment in general and peace of mind for parents.
The view of the lake from the cottage deck is postcard perfect, so quiet and tranquil....just what the human spirit yearns for to "rejuvenate". Yes, the steep driveway to the cottage is daunting at first. However, once you know what to expect on foot or in your vehicle, you develop a comfort level....and my spin, it is part of the whole "cottage" experience".
We found the cottage itself quaint, comfortable and inviting from the homey warmth inside to the tree shaded deck outside with comfortable seating to enjoy the splendor offered by the lake views. Our daughter's family utilized the grill nightly on the deck and enjoyed dining on the deck's picnic table.
The owners Pam and Doug have a binder of things to do in the area and our daughter's family utilized. Their favorite was the "retirement" home for wildlife (bears, tigers, lions, etc.), a 30 minute drive. They raved about this gem...better than any zoo.
Wonderful memories and hopefully with a return visit in the future....
We had a wonderful time at the Red Cottage - very private & quiet! Our boys fished but it was a chilly & breezy week so it was diffifcult to go out on the rowboat. The rope swing was awesome! We had lots of fun playing games, cooking (great grill) and celebrating my husband's b'day. Also visited nearby antique shops & apple orchard :) The cottage provided everything we needed along with a great selection of DVD's. It would have been nice to have firewood for the fireplace though. Acquiring the cottage, transactions, directions, ect. was made easy but don't like the numerous e-mails that follow. Overall, the Red Cottage was great place to visit and would love to go back!
Very nice place . We had a good time fishing and site seeing. Well worth the money spent.
This property has way to many steps (inside and out). It is not set up for fishing. The boat was 3/4 full of water and not worth dipping out because ther was no oar to use. With the bathroom downstairs and the living room and bedrooms upstairs you were constantly taking steps. The house was very cute but not arranged very well. If the TV was downstairs that would be much more convenient, since we could not fish we watched a lot of movies.
My wife and I did nothing for five days except eat, sleep, read, write, play Scrabble, and take long walks with our dog. We hope to make a return visit soon, and we've recommended this rental to others. The owners went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was a pleasure. One caution we would give: the property is down a rather steep incline. We had no trouble driving or walking up and down the hill, but others might, especially the elderly. Tip: If you bring large items, such as a cooler, you'll have to walk it down a small hill to get it inside. But in general, the Red Cottage is the perfect, quiet getaway at an affordable price.
Lake Papakeechie is a private lake that does not permit motors of any kind. Rowboats, canoes, kayak, paddleboats and sailboats are welcome. This ensures a peaceful environment with excellent fishing and safe swimming. The public boat ramp for Lake Wawasee is one mile away for skiing and boating. The Tri-County Game Preserve with excellent hiking and hunting backs up to this property.
