About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

Step back in time to 1914, to a lovely solid brick Victorian. Enjoy the spacious rooms; the wrap-around porch; the summer porch overlooking the Victorian garden; and much more. The setting is Ranson, West Virginia - the neighboring hamlet of Charles Town,WV. Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, The Robinson House guest home offers an alternative to a motel and to the bed and breakfast inns. Our guests have the enjoyment of the entire home. If you are a business traveler; vacationing in the historical Shenandoah Valley; or just in the area for a get-away weekend, you can enjoy the amenities and privacy of your home away from home.

The Robinson House is the perfect setting for the couple wanting to experience the historical flavor of the area; for a family attending a wedding, or reunion; the business traveler; or a writer needing quiet inspiration. About Joyce Garrison

A native of Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Joyce was educated at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. She has made West Virginia her home for 44 years. She and her husband purchased The Robinson House in 2005 from the former owners who were moving to a retirement community. The plan was to make the home into an extended stay. After working on the home for over a year, Joyce decided she wanted to share the history of the area and house with others. Thus was born the idea of the 'guest house' - a home away from home. The home is Joyce's version of a bed and breakfast without actually serving breakfast. Gourmet food is stocked in the refrigerator and guests enjoy the home and food at their leisure.

Joyce Garrison purchased this house in 2005

Why Joyce Garrison chose West Virginia

Too many old homes are destroyed to make room for parking or offices buildings. I wanted to preserve an example of quality craftsmanship and character that is lost on newer homes today. The Robinson House has the original woodwork and varnish; plaster walls; light fixtures and bathrooms. It does have updated electric, plumbing and heating (heat pumps).

What makes this house unique

One could say The Robinson House is my doll house! I love the wrap-around front porch with the rocking chairs; the rose garden; the old flower beds filled with perennials from a by gone era and the fish pond. The home represents to me a special time in history where life moved at a slower pace and people cared about their friends and neighbors.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality! The Robinson House is absolutely beautiful and everything was perfect for our stay. We really appreciated how you went out of your way to prepare for our stay and to make us comfortable while we were here. Your definitely went above and beyond! God Bless,

Very Nice Historical Home

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying at the Robertson House. If you love older homes this one is for you. The owner has worked to keep it original but with modern convenience. The casino is within walking distance. Owner Joyce has provided everything you need. We arrived with fresh muffins and cookies. Let me not forget the fresh ice tea and lemonade. Joyce even brought bacon, eggs and English muffins for breakfast for the next morning. Beds were very comfortable and my husband loved the soft bed sheets. Joyce and her husband also gave us a history tour of their other home that they a currently renovating. Highly recommend staying at the Robertson House.

The house is beautifully maintained. Everything you need is there for you. No need to travel with extras because the owner has already thought of it. It is a great place to relax. Drinks by the poolside are a must. It is also a wonderful "home" base for day trips. Much to do. Harpers Ferry and all things historical. Frederick, Maryland was a beautiful walking town only about 1/2 hour away. Shops, antiques, restaurants and of course history. And don't forget D.C. It is a little farther but not too far for a day trip.

Owner's Response: It is a pleasure to share my home with guests who love history and enjoy an old Victorian home. Whether in a rocking chair on the front porch or by the pool with a cool drink, taking time out to relax from life's cares is great for the mind, body and soul. Thank you again for taking such great care of my old home. Come again soon!

Thoughts on the Robinson House

  • 2 of 5

The owner was very helpful and keep the house in good order with a personal touch. For us, the lack of proper TV's was a negative along with the number of cats allowed to stay on the premises.

Owner's Response: In my description of The Robinson House I state the old Victorian is like stepping back in time - 1914. I do have two televisions and high speed Internet which I would considered more than adequate for just a couple. There are four feral kitties that live on the property but will not go near or interact with guests (photos of the home shows one of them). Cats do help the keep mice and other rodents from the area. The owner is part of a growing movement in the community to trap, spay/neuter, vaccinate and release. We also are educating people on being responsible pet owners. Our past guests have not only enjoyed the Robinson House immensely, but admired and respected the owner's vigilance in trying to assist the community in its efforts. Over the years repeat guests bring treats to the kitties and have sent them Christmas cards!

We used this house to stay while visiting family in the area. The house is spacious, comfortable, clean and not lacking anything. Front porch was enjoyed by all in the evening and we will likely stay here again .

High level of service

I travel here once a year for an electric car event. You can walk to APUS and plug your car in (they have 14 charging stations). The owner is very hospitable and the place has everything you need. It's a very historic property and very well maintained. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: It is a pleasure to make our guests feel welcome and to give them an opportunity to experience a by gone era of over a hundred years ago. The Robinson House retains much of ambience of life in 1914. Believe it or not we had electric cars back then!

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your experience. Truly the house becomes a home through the people who visit. "The ornament of a house is the friends that frequent it." Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1803 - 1882. I look forward to you becoming a frequent visitor!
