We've stayed here numerous times--Fall, Winter, Early Summer--and it's always great. Perched on the water, with wonderful views of the lake, you feel almost like you are on a boat. In the winter, it's like being on a town square, because you can watch people ice fishing, skiing, and walking their dogs on the frozen lake. The cottage is equipped with everything you could possibly need, from kitchen equipment to linens, and we particularly enjoyed making fires in the charming stone fireplace. Outside there's a deck, a garden and a dock for warm weather use. We enjoyed skiing on the lake and snowmobile trails, and there's a great cross-country ski place in Bethel, about an hour's drive from Winthrop. It's a short trip for good eats at the Emporium in Readfield, or to Hallowell for restaurants, antiques, and browsing. Best of all are the hosts, Diane and Greg, who are the proverbial salt of the earth. Greg is a mine of information on the local area, and Diane makes award-winning pottery in her Winthrop studio. Living across the street from the cottage, they have always made us feel at home during our stays and been incredibly responsive to our requests, even finding us other places to stay if they were booked up!
The cottage is simply a true charmer. It has all you need for a romantic get-a-way or a family-fun vacation. There are plenty of sleeping accommodations, a kitchen which is fully equipped for preparing meals, along with a cute dining area with great views of the lake. The deck is fabulous and nearly hangs over the water. It is perfect for cookouts and relaxing while watching the loons, eagles, hawks, fisherman, and boaters. The dock is great for lounging, sunning and fishing. It is also easy in and out when docking a boat. Maranacook Lake is a large, very clean and quiet lake with very limited boat and jet ski traffic. It has a free and well-maintained town (Winthrop) boat launch at the southern end of the lake. Bring you camera......the sunset pictures are ones you enlarge, frame and hang on your walls at home. We had a wonderful week and look forward to returning next year.
We were in town to visit family, enjoy some quiet time. This was a great location, convenient, well appointed, and great for our family with teens. The home was warm, unusual among Maine winter rental. We loved watching the lake change as the temperature dropped. The only thing missing was a snow storm!!! Thank you Diane for checking on us and answering our questions.
I have had several people ask how my vacation was in Maine, and all I can say was it was AMAZING. The location of the home is perfect, there is nothing you can think of that isn't there for you when you are staying. Enjoyed several evenings watching the sunset while floating in the kayak, and several mornings journaling on the dock. Plenty of room for a large family. A hour and 1/2 to the ocean can't be that, and have the lake as an option. Diane was wonderful making sure all went okay, and we were satisfied. Great hostess
This was a perfect place for my husband and I while we visited family in the area. Although it was larger than what we needed for the two of us, we enjoyed having a gathering place for visiting. The pictures show exactly how the house is arranged. Diane is very friendly and helpful, loaning us a cooler for my husbands high school reunion. She told us that she would not bother us but was available by phone any time we needed her as she lives just across the road.
Our daughter and son-in-law really enjoyed the use of the kayaks for an evening ride on beautiful Marranacook Lake. The house is so close to the water you could cast a fishing line from the deck.
The kitchen is quaint (the stove is from the 60's) and is very well equipped with everything you would need to fix meals for your family plus guests. I was pleasantly surprised to have many spices, paper plates, plastic ware and dish soap available for us. There was also some food and all kinds of tea in the cabinets that we could enjoy. Everything was clean and just waiting for us to move in.
Having morning coffee while watching the loons on the lake was priceless. Our sunsets were also something to see.
Thank you Diane, for a wonderful place.

We stayed at the Hosta House last month and had a wonderful time. The Hosta House was perfect for the 11 of us that were together. The house was large enough so that we weren't running into each other when we turned around. The lake was right there and Dad and the grown sons spent hours throwing the Nerf football around in it. We had a sweltering hot week so the lake was most welcome. The back of the house faces the west for those gorgeous sunsets but be sure to keep the drapes drawn in the afternoon as it does heat up the upstairs through the lakeside windows/slider door. We enjoyed the lake, sailing, and kayaking. We had an 8 year old who loved the raft and a 3 year old who liked being able to be in the water close to shore as it wasn't deep. The Hosta House is fully equipped! I had brought a crockpot to make pot roast figuring they may not have it but sure enough they did! The yard is small with beautiful gardens and the most awesome firepit ever! When we weren't wallowing in the lake, we golfed at Cobbossee Colony Golf Course , a little 9 hole that suited us hackers very well. WE probably would have been frowned upon at the country club! We also went to DEW Animal Kingdom & Sanctuary. It's a small non profit zoo/rescue that entertained the two youngsters for an hour or so. Had good meals at Sully's, Peppers, Fast Eddies Drive In and ice cream at Tubby's. Diane and Greg were very welcoming and Diane was nice enough to search for the things we thought we forgot and to mail back the pair of shoes that we did! She also does wonderful pottery work and her workshop is in the downstairs of the house. We bought several pieces to bring home with us. Thank you Diane and Greg!
