Maine on the Lake

  • 5 of 5

I grew up spending summers in Maine so I experience great joy every time I return. I don't need a luxurious place to stay because Maine's charm is being outdoors. Bill's cabin is a nice cottage on a lake in Maine. It's all straightforward, with all the necessary items. Has a big deck as well as a screened in porch. The location is quiet and private. There is a great view of the lake. The yard is large, with a hammock to relax on and a picnic table to enjoy an outdoor meal with family & friends. There is so much to do in the area...my favorite things are spending every day kayaking on the lake, fishing, getting the pie at Moody's Diner, strolling through Damariscotta, visiting my old haunts in Owl's Head, scouting out the local farmer's markets. Looking forward to a return this summer.

Mixed feelings about the cottage

  • 3 of 5

We felt very mixed about our stay at the cottage. We've been coming to Damariscotta Lake for a few years, but we had never stayed at this particular cottage. First, I will say Bill was great to work with- he got back to me quickly and was helpful, informative and flexible. The cottage does have many good qualities: it's spacious and has plenty of sleeping room and a lovely view of the lake. It has a kitchen well stocked with supplies and a propane grill. There were two different duck families that seemed to live in the little cove where the cottage was located and that was sweet to watch.

There were some downsides though. The cottage smelled very musty when we arrived and we were also very surprised to find that there were no linens beyond blankets on the beds... no sheets, no towels, no dish towels, nothing. We just had wished this was more explicitly stated, because we came without linens. We tried calling the local property managers to ask if we could possibly borrow just some sheets for the week and they never called us back (even a call to say no would have been nice). The cottage also didn't look very clean (layers of dirt on the blinds over the beds, for example). We also were pretty disappointed to find that the lake access from the cottage was pretty unswimmable- there were so many reeds and lily pads that you had to take the canoe out to the raft to swim out there. I had asked about this before we rented it and was told it was swimmable right from the property. Who knows, maybe it was worse this year? We also thought there were canoes and kayaks, but there only are two canoes, which is a bummer because it requires that you always go out with another person for a paddle or swim. Also, there's a nice flatscreen TV and DVD player, but there are no DVDs, so bring some if you want to use it. All in all, we had a fine time, but I don't think we'll be staying here again.

Owner's Response: This cottage has provided peace and pleasure for dozens of people over the past decade. This is the rare "unhappy" person who has been there. If she had read the listing she would have seen that linens are not included and that there are two canoes not kayaks. There is an underwater cleared way to the swimming dock as I described to her. I am sorry she feels mixed and am thankful that so many others have enjoyed the quiet and beautiful spot even with some occasional but rare dust.

Peaceful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

If your looking for a quiet place to forget about work and just enjoy reading and watching the kids swim this is the perfect place. Not to mention the beautiful lake and paddling the canoes which was so amazing. Both our boys 4 and 6 were able to wade in the front of the property. The water front is clear and rock bottom for about 10-20 feet before you get into the Lilly pads. For adult swimming we took the canoe out to the raft and swam out there. I don't ever like to touch lake bottom so this was perfect just to cool off and float around. The best part was when my family came to visit, the boys went on the canoe and caught a fish, that was amazing. The cabin is clean and comfortable, we had great internet service and were able to stream netfllix on our tablets. Lobster was at an all time low, and we ate plenty on the great picnic table, lobster pot at the cabin made cooking easy. The beds were comfortable. This was a perfect place for us to meet up with friends and family. It was like camping out with all the fixings of home. The area is quite and allowed for my husband and I to get our morning jogs completed without traffic. My sister who lives lives in Portland is thinking of renting the cabin in the future just to come and enjoy the lake and relax with a nightly camp fire. We were close enough to the ocean to enjoy the water and yet far enough to enjoy the peace of being at the lake. Darmiscotta state park is only a few minutes down the road with a sandy beach and great for a picnic. Thanks so much for your cabin it was a perfect.

Loved this cabin.......

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this lovely cottage. We stayed 2 weeks in August and loved every minute of it. The lake view was so nice and the whole stay was very relaxing. The cottage is in a very peaceful setting. We went for lots of walks and it's very convenient to everything. Just a few minutes to US 1 and Moody's Restaurant - one of our favorites and shopping. We went to Round Top Ice Cream several times-nothing like fresh, home made ice cream from Round Top Farm. I've been coming to this area for 40 plus years and love Damarascotta Lake. The lake is clean and we enjoyed taking the canoe out on the lake. Our 2 dogs loved it too. The cottage was well stocked and the internet was great when it rained. We cooked out on the grill and enjoyed the views at every meal. We were able to hike pretty close by and didn't want to leave the cottage many days. We hated to leave and hope to come again next year.
