Hilo District Condo Rental Photos and Description

Chic, contemporary, light, with a beautiful ocean view, 1-bedroom Maunaloa Shores 405 is stylish and affordable. Great location close to Hilo. Completely remodeled in a modern fashion...

Chic, contemporary, light, with a beautiful ocean view, Maunaloa Shores 405 is one of two 1-bedroom Hilo condos we offer. Stylish and affordable, it's just 4 miles from the center of charming Hilo town and right next door to a park with sandy bottom lagoons. This condo was completely remodeled in a modern fashion, but that won't keep you from being transported back to the feel of old Hawaii. Enjoy the ocean views from the bedroom when you wake up or from the lanai as you end your day enjoying our famous warm tropical tradewinds.

The owner has a design background and his creativity shows in the interior of this condo! A light color scheme with an open feel and interesting artwork. Glass tables maintain the open feeling, including a wonderful glass desk. The living area and bedroom both have wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, and you can watch the bedroom TV from a luxurious king bed. The condo has FREE high-speed Internet and a telephone with answering machine and FREE long-distance calling to the U.S. and Canada!

Lots of designer touches include some wonderful lighting and free-floating shelves. A A new kitchen with recent appliances is always a plus when you're staying in a condo. And you will love the bathroom! Aqua-colored floor tiles also surround the tub, and all are lit by wonderful lights. Very cool bathroom.

Walk next door to swim, snorkel, or hang out at the park, or swim in the fresh water pool on the property. On most days you can see steaming Kilauea, our active volcano, from your front door! Or take the 5-10 minute drive to downtown Hilo to the popular Farmer's Market or the shops and restaurants, and don't forget the historic Palace Theater for movies and live theater! Maunaloa Shores is in a very picturesque setting and we never get tired of the beauty this location has to offer.

The Maunaloa Shores condominium complex has a secured elevator and you have an assigned parking space. You'll find a coin-operated washer/dryer on every floor of the complex for your convenience. We are happy to confirm only non-smokers in this condo.

Year-round rate range is $85 - $175 per night, depending upon party size and dates of your visit. Monthly rate range is $1850 - $2100.

Good Basic Unit in Great Location

  • 3 of 5

The location of this unit is wonderful, and the views from the lanai are great. The furnishings are quite nice, (although the sofa is a bit short for anyone to lie on it to watch TV,) bed is comfortable. There are a number of issues that were of concern, however. We arrived after dark and initially were only able to turn on a kitchen light missing a few bulbs. It was very difficult to figure out how to turn on the lights in the living room and bedroom. After crawling around on the floor in the bedroom with a flashlight, I discovered one lamp was unplugged, as was one in the living room. Even when plugged in, however, it took a while to figure out how to turn them on. Wall switches turned on the fans, (which did fine to cool the unit) but not the lights on the fans. The rental company was very responsive, and sent someone out to bring some light bulbs and fix a broken lamp. We didn't find out until he came out, however, that the fan lights went on with a remote. We had no idea what those extra remotes were for as there was no note/instruction about it. We found that the kitchen was not particularly well equipped. We were only there for 4 days so it was not a huge deal, but longer it would have been more of an issue. Lastly, the sliding door to the lanai really needs to be fixed. It does not close properly and is very difficult to lock. All that said, if some of these issues were addressed, my rating would definitely be higher.

Owner's Response: Thanks for letting us know some issues that we should address -- we will get right on them. Unfortunately, the sliding doors in that building are an issue for everyone, and we have not yet found a good solution, but we'll keep trying! Thanks again for the feedback.

Reviewer Comments:

The condo was clean and located within a 5 min drive of the airport. Convenient parking. Close to several state beaches - one directly behind the condo. Had a view of the ocean and beach through the trees. It is about a 10 min drive to downtown. Only 1 restaurant within walking distance. Great homemade ice cream shop a little drive toward Hilo. Did not use the pool but appeared to be clean. The furnishings and kitchenware was nothing fancy, but more than adequate, as was the bathroom. There is no AC, but two ceiling fans kept us comfortable. Nevertheless there were two major negatives:1)the wireless service was very sporadic - out more than on - making use of an iPad to obtain info on the area very frustrating; 2) a condo owner(s) nearby smoke on their lanai in spite of the condo rules. The smoke drifts making the lanai this condo unpleasant to be on if you don't like the smell of cigarette smoke. Based on comment in the guest book - these have been recurring issues. Overall, it met our needs at a very reasonable price.

Reviewer Comments:

Excellent location for exploring big island attractions

Unit was clean and fully furnished. Nice little one bedroom condo.

Positives: bamboo floors throughout unit, on site laundry (by elevators), ceiling fans in LR & BR, assigned parking, internet connection with wifi, nice park behind building.

Negatives: NO A/C, cable modem regularly drops internet connection after being on a few hours and is very difficult to troubleshoot (1 mbs connection otherwise), towels all smelled funky even after being washed, ceiling fans were all controlled by remote control units so if remote has fan or light turned off the wall switch is useless (found this out upon nighttime arrival and remote hidden in a drawer), BR was missing 1 of the 2 window screens so only 1 window could be left open, couch is not at all comfy (very hard cushions with weird sloped ends that you can't sit on).

That said, I've paid more per night for a KOA cabin in NM than this place. A few improvements could make staying here much more pleasant however.

Manager responded on 7/16/2014:

Aloha and mahalo for your review. So nice to hear the positives about Maunaloa Shores 405 and that you enjoyed your visit. We appreciate your comments about the things that need fixing and we've already scheduled the handyman to replace the missing screen. The couch is a very "modern" style and is not for everyone however, we've had folks who really love it. We're sorry to hear you had trouble finding the remote controls for the ceiling fans; we'll remind the housekeepers to leave them out in the open for easy access.

Reviewer Comments:

This is the fourth time I have tried to complete this review. If the page again goes to "can't display" I will give up. Positives about the property: amazing view from balcony to lagoon complete with sea turtles, attached to large park with the ocean just beyond..location is good..well-equipped..very helpful and nice manager there days..O.K. price..layout good. Negatives: dirty, shabby bedroom drapes which couldn't be closed.. pillows flat and smelly.. bed linens have seen better days..one screen missing so window had to be kept closed..futon and its pillows had bad body odor smell..second hand smoke from neighbor (this building is mainly a residential one) every evening into the night made balcony almost unusable and needed fly swatter and bug spray for expected tropics visitors. But last 2 days I was invaded by large houseflies which were gross and drove me crazy. I killed 20-30 but there were more and I couldn't find where they were getting in. Awful!! There are so many activities and sights to see that it is hard to relax. I enjoyed the Seahorse Farm and Thunder Mountain Coffee Plantation on the Kona side and ziplining, swimming and just seeing the sights on the Hilo side. I hiked to colored sand beaches, swam in volcano-heated lagoons, hiked around Volcano National Park, the breathtaking Hawaiian Botanical Garden and to petroglyphs. I drove to very old little towns and walked around visiting many tiny stores, I visited Farmers' Markets and was introduced to fruits I didn't know existed, and had some of the best food I have ever had at Merryman's and the Paniolo Cafe in Waimea. In Hilo the Hilo Burger Joint is great for lunch. It's too bad that the owner of Mauna Loa 405 has let his property deteriorate when it would not cost much to fix its problems. Oh, and a grab bar in the tub would be nice for those of us traveling alone or have some mobility issues.

Owner's Response: Many things in Maunaloa Shores 405 are scheduled for replacement and updating in the next few months. Sadly, sometimes it takes quite a while to get things delivered here to the most remote rock in the world.
