Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 4 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Accessible only by passenger ferry boat, 20 minutes from the mainland USA, our home 'Shoes Off' on beautiful Bald Head Island is the perfect retreat for your family getaway. Over 180 degree views of South Beach and the Atlantic Ocean from two stories of huge decks, golf course views to the rear and just 38 steps to the boardwalk beach access. Walk to the Bald Head Island Club, offering gourmet and casual dining, championship golf, tennis, kid friendly pool with a waterslide, championship Croquet Greensward and delicious treats, sandwiches, ice cream and pizza from the “Pelicatessen”. Also within walking distance from Shoes Off is a large children’s playground, sand volleyball court and day camp facilities at the Bald Head Island Club.

Our home was first listed on VRBO in April 2010.

Shoes Off is a family home with the focus on just that…..Family.

Bald Head Island is the most family friendly place we’ve ever been.

Summer weekly rentals in our home include temporary memberships to BOTH the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club. The Shoals Club is situated on the southeast tip of the island, where the convergence of South and East Beaches form the “Point” of Cape Fear, one of the most beautiful ocean views on the USA’s Atlantic coast. You can literally stand on a two-foot wide point of sand, with waves coming from both the southwest and northeast, on the very tip of the Cape.

Weekly rentals include all cleaning charges. Provided to all Shoes Off guests with our compliments are linens, bath and beach towels, bath tissue, paper towels and trash bags. We have a well-equipped kitchen with service for 12 people and seating for even more. We maintain an open guest cabinet in the kitchen with an array of cooking spices, oil, coffee filters and more. We’ve rented beach homes in the past that were completely void of most everything………Not a paper towel, salt-shaker or roll of TP in sight. We are pleased to offer you the opposite of that. Just bring your bathing suit, your flip-flops, your favorite refreshment, your iPad/Pod and a good book.

Our home is designed on a reverse floor plan with living, dining, screened porch areas and incredible ocean views on the 3rd floor. The home features two master suites, and two other bedrooms on the 2nd level, all with direct deck access and ocean views from each bedroom. One bedroom is specifically arranged for children, featuring bunk beds, sleeper sofa, a closetful of toys, DVD, VCR, Satellite TV and a selection of children’s movies.

We also provide one high-chair and two Pack & Plays.

On the deck, just outside of the 3rd floor kitchen/living area door is a 48” stainless steel gas grill than can handle outdoor cooking for the largest of families or groups.

We offer large flat screen monitors and satellite TV in all of the adult bedrooms. The children’s bedroom has a TV/VCR/DVD combo. The 3rd floor living area features a 50” Panasonic Plasma TV, Direct TV Satellite service and a Bose Lifestyle System audio and home theater. The system includes an easy access dock for your iPod or iPhone.

Our master suite includes a 24” iMac computer. Wireless internet access is provided throughout the home, with a signal that can reach the beach if that’s of interest. The fishing from the beach is sometimes excellent to outstanding. We recommend that you unplug and take a fishing rod instead.

Shoes Off offers an elevator. While not completely handicap accessible, the elevator makes the 3 story climb easy on the knees for anyone who might have trouble with stairs. We use the elevator primarily for hauling luggage, groceries and supplies to the 2nd floor bedrooms and 3rd floor living and dining areas. The elevator is exceptionally helpful in this regard.

We provide bikes for children and adults, a baby jogger, kids bike trailer, beach chairs, some beach toys, a few kites, sand spikes for your fishing rods and a small beach umbrella or two.

The loop road behind Shoes Off (Snowy Egret and Black Skimmer) is a fantastic place for children to bike and skate safely in an area with virtually no traffic. Two of our children learned to ride bikes there. Two of our children’s bikes have training wheels available. The entire Island is also a fantastic place to walk, jog, bike and skate. Some contractor vehicles are allowed on the roads during the weekdays but you’ll mostly just see and hear the quiet hum of the occasional electric golf cart passing by.

We can provide you with information for children’s day camps at the Bald Head Island Club and the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Both offer terrific children’s programs and can provide Mom and Dad with a few hours of peace and quiet, one of the real beauties of a vacation on Bald Head Island.

Vehicular transportation on the island is limited to golf carts. We offer one 6-seat cart and one 4-seat cart.

The photographs of Shoes Off hardly do the place justice. It’s simply an incredible home for your family and friends to unwind, relax, retreat and recharge. Bald Head Island is unto itself. Come and feel for yourself. You’ve never seen the sunset like you will see it from here.

Please visit us online for more photographs, video tours, island guides and maps. Please email us for more information.

We hope to have you as our guest soon.

About Steve Montgomery

We hope to have you as our guest soon. Steve and Kids - Madeline, Maxwell and Eleanor.

Why Steve Montgomery chose Coastal North Carolina

It's the most family friendly place we've ever been. Having our extended family scattered from the Midwest to the northeast USA, Shoes Off has been very friendly to ours. The place is the ultimate magnet in our selfishly attracting friends and family to come and visit.

What makes this house unique

It's darker at night than any place we've seen. The sky at night is bright like you can't imagine. It's safe for our kids and the dog to run free. The Island is quiet. The Island's ecosystem is diverse, from oceanfront beach, extraordinary marine life, 12,000 acre old-growth maritime forest to the marshes and creeks of the lower Cape Fear River Basin. The fishing can be excellent most months of the year, with always something biting even in the warmest months. The focus on nature and conservation here is a terrific element for our three young children to experience.

Perfect for all ages.

  • 5 of 5

This property was made even more desirable and pleasant by the owner who was very attentive to our needs. The home came equipped with all means of recreation for the beach, bikes and a kyack. The membership in the two clubs was a distinct advantage that we took full use of. We will definitely consider it for our next trip to BHI.

Perfect Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This past week, we were at Shoes Off for an incredible week on BHI. The pristine views of the ocean, the solace of the quiet island, and the daily "dolphin show" each morning just off the house were the highlights of our trip.

I can't say enough about Steve and how great of a "host" he was. From the inquiry through the booking and even throughout the week - Steve helped us in innumerable ways. The vibe of the house makes you feel right at home - comfortable and relaxing - inviting and open.

We enjoyed Nye's Ice Cream Sandwiches at the Maritime Market - and had a great seafood dinner at Mojo's on the Harbor and a Prime Rib buffet at the BHI club that was second-to-none.

Even though this trip was too cold for swimming on the beach - the pools at both the BHI Club and Shoals Club were perfect, the view from the top of "Old Baldy" was magnificent, and kayaking in the creek was spectacular. The Conservancy offered so many activities throughout the week - and their funds go to the sea turtles and so much more!

You won't find a friendlier and more relaxing place to stay than Shoes Off at BHI! We can't wait to go back!

Incredible hospitality

  • 5 of 5

Steve and his family are the definition of hospitality. From the initial contact to post-stay follow up every question was answered. Steve helped us get additional services set-up with his contact on the island. We scheduled family pictures, fishing charters, and things at the Conservancy and can't wait to come back.

The house is in excellent repair. Clean, orderly, and taken care of. Amenities and accommodations exceeded our expectations. This was not my first time on the island, but brought another family with us who's inaugural trip was perfected by staying here. We will stay here again. Perfect for the adults, perfect for the kids.

Great Location, Amenities and Comfortable House

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at 38 Steps last July and had a great time. Even though it is not directly on the beach, access was very convenient a short walk across the road to the boardwalk. The beach in that are is very nice as well. The Owner has made it super easy to transport coolers, chairs toys (that are included with the rental) with a beach cart. Golf carts are great! In fact, they seemed to be some of the faster ones on the island!

The views from the deck to the beach were not hampered by the location and there was plenty of view shed to watch the ocean, boats, etc. Also sitting on the deck we also had a nice constant breeze.

Inside the house was very comfortable. We had 7 in our group and everyone had adequate sleeping and bathroom space. The kitchen was well stocked. And we did appreciate not having to run out to buy small items such as salt, coffee filters etc. There were nice TV's, and a computer (which we did not use).

The downside? Just like any house subjected to the harsh salt environment, a few items were in need of repair. But nothing we could not work around. For example I could not get the garage door to shut. One of those PIA sensors. I just was trying to shut it when there was some heavy rain moving through. Not a big deal.

We would/hope to rent 38 Steps again. The location, house and Owner were all perfect for our group and we had a nice week.

So many reasons to love this place!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough about how much we enjoyed our time at Shoes Off. It was truly one of our best family vacations ever. Every year we travel with our best friends from college and their kids, and we are always up for a new experience. Our stay here changed that agenda!

As I said in the title, there are many reasons to love this place. First off, you will not find a more congenial or responsive owner than Steve. He is great: organized, helpful and friendly. My first interaction with him 'sealed the deal' on why we'd picked the right place to stay, and that hunch was absolutely correct. He answered all of our questions, made great suggestions about what to do on the island, and made his first priority our vacation happiness. He even FedEx'd a pair of earrings that I accidentally left on the bedroom windowsill after our departure!

The home itself has a comfy, lived in vibe that makes it seem like you've come home for your vacation. I hate coming on a family vacation and feeling that my kids are going to destroy the place. While all the furniture was updated and pretty, it did not feel sterile or like we were staying in a hotel room. That being said, for all the techies out there, the TV and Bose sound system won't let you down. The configuration of the home is perfect. Almost every bedroom has an ocean view, but we spent the majority of the time in the great upstairs living area-- open and airy with plenty of space for lounging, eating and cooking. The screened in deck off the living area was my favorite. The adults ate every meal out there and we enjoyed the breeze and crashing waves as our backdrop.

Shoe's Off must have the best view of the sunset on the island. Words cannot do it justice. It was our favorite time of day. We'd put our young kids to bed and then meet upstairs for a glass of wine and the prettiest view. It is one of your only chances to have a sunset over the water on the East Coast!

Our 4 kids are all very young-- 5 and under-- and the island itself is an oasis for a family. There are so many things to do! The pools are amazing (Steve was right when he said we'd live at the BHI club because of the ages of our kids) and the beach is huge and private, which allowed us to let our little ones wander. The golf carts were so fun, and we loved exploring the island. This place is perfect for all ages. Older kids would love it, too.

We cannot wait to go back. We are ready to be Shoe's Off/ BHI regulars!

Outstanding BHI Property

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed annual family beach vacation weeks for several years in a few NC locations. We like BHI the best, and Shoes Off topped our list of favorite rentals. Its location is truly hard to beat, not just virtually on the beach, but occupying the shortest distance to the most frequented places. Membership at both BHI clubs is a huge plus; we are particularly fond of the Shoals Club. The home was clean, with everything provided. The kitchen is set up efficiently, uncluttered, well furnished, with new appliances. Having the large gas grill on the deck was another plus. Beach supplies were just what we needed. Steve attended to our every request. We highly recommend Shoes Off.
