Great NC Mountain retreat

  • 4 of 5

Highlights: the view from the porch, the great summer weather, the privacy, the hot tub (clean and well maintained), pool table, good wifi and DirecTV, the cabin amenities (everything you need)

Be aware: the cabin is 20+ minutes from any services in Banner Elk or Beech Mountain, was not an issue for us since we mostly wanted to hang out at the cabin but it would be less ideal if you wanted to do a lot of exploring or eat out every night, also there is nowhere to easily go walking/hiking without driving, we also had a rooster and some barking dogs nearby that were not a serious problem but did on occasion reduce the tranquility

Mamma Bear Cabin

  • 3 of 5

Spectacular view, lovely cabin, very peaceful and everything you would need. However, like the guest from December we saw and heard rodents in the cabin, and the sink handle base is loose making it aggravating to turn the water off. Fan in living room is still dirty. Shame these things weren't taken care of by property management company. Would I stay again....yes if these things were taken care of.

Beautifully constructed, secluded cabin

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Mamma Bear Log Cabin very much. The cabin is constructed with huge logs and the vaulted ceiling is quite beautiful. It is about a 25 minute drive from Banner Elk and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. The views from the front porch, hot tub and fire pit are amazing. The furnishings are nice looking and comfortable. The cabin was clean and inviting. The owners were a pleasure to work with (we needed to change dates and they were gracious enough to accommodate the change with no problems). A couple of things to plan for: the downstairs bedroom is not heated (not that we could see), so bring a space heater if you are staying in the winter. Also, propane is not provided (this was stated in the rental agreement but we overlooked it!) so be sure to pick up a propane tank before you drive up the mountain if you plan on grilling. We would love to return to return to this cabin in the future! Thanks Sibori family!

Awesome just awesome!

I have stayed in lots of cabins throughout my life time, but none comes close to Mama Bear. I felt right at home every thing I needed the owners had supplied. My wife loved the kitchen with all modern equipment and my son and grand kids went hiking on the 8 acres that the property sits on.gave me a chance to get close to my son again. Thanks to the owners for allowing us to stay in your retiement home

Not the best experience

  • 1 of 5

Upon arrival, the cabin had not been cleaned well at all. Smears all over the counters, there were dirty towels in the laundry room, garbage all over the back yard, the microwave had food in it! The fans were caked with dust, every window sill had several dead flies and we found clothes under beds and downstairs. Yuck! The first thing I did was to start cleaning. In addition, we were very surprised that there were several typical amenities that were not supplied. First, the firewood. I have yet to rent a cabin with a fire pit and fireplace where they did not provide some firewood. The first evening we got there it was warm so there was no problem but had we arrived in the cold and there was no wood, it would have been a disappointing evening not being able to start a fire. There wasn't even a lighter in the house! In addition, through our stay we experienced the following: there was no access to a vacuum. Having kids, this is essential. We called the property manager and reported the condition of the home, the broken spa cover and the kitchen faucet to which and the property manager said "the owners are not going to fix that. It's been like that for a year so don't worry about it." And in response the cleaning, she just said they were rushed to clean. Our next call was to gain access to a vacuum. The property manager told me that the owners kept that locked up. She agreed to stop by and take out the vacuum and put it out for me. When she came, my husband and I were out but our kids were home. The property manager walked right into the house without knocking or announcing herself, scaring my kids. She told them she didn't expect anyone home because she didn't see a car outside. Wow. My final call was to report the rats in the attic which make so much noise in the late night right over the upstairs bedroom. Clearly there had been activity with rats and it had been addressed before. The response we got from the property manager was simply "nothing is going to be done about that now. We will deal with it after you leave". Unacceptable in my book. As a last issue, it finally got cold 2 nights before we left and the heat did not work. We found no reason to call the property manager because thus far she did nothing to help us. We reported all these issues to the owner after the trip and as of today, 10 days after the complaint was sent, the owners have not responded. NOT WORTH THE MONEY!

Car: necessary

A 30 minute drive from Mama Bear Cabin in any direction will take you to almost any place you want to go: Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain ski resorts for skiing, tubing, skating, sledding and snowboarding; Grandfather Mountain for hiking and the Mile High swinging bridge; Lake Watauga for boating and canoeing.

The town of Banner Elk is also a 20 minute drive. If you drive another 15-20 you will arrive at Boone or Blowing Rock where there's plenty of shopping and dining options.

Other outdoor activities nearby: biking, fishing, rafting and horseback riding.

No matter what you do, there's always lots of mountain scenery to enjoy.
