Staten Island Apartment Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 5-6

Step into another world in this duplex apartment on the top two floors of a 140 year-old hilltop Victorian home. Relax in the evening with the lights from the bay and the Verrazano Bridge outside the window. Yet you are just a 20 minute downhill walk to the Staten Island Ferry, the greatest free ride in the world. The house is surrounded by a lush, terraced garden with tree swing. Descend from our secluded hilltop into downtown Staten Island, a diverse, up-and-coming real New York neighborhood with a convenient strip of restaurants and small shops.

If you have the spirit of romantic adventure and hate overpriced hotel rooms, we can make your New York stay even more special, and affordable.

The Ferry to Manhattan: The Staten Island Ferry is by far the loveliest way to enter Manhattan, a 25-minute cruise across the harbor. You pass very close to the Statue of Liberty and watch the skyscrapers grow enormous as you approach. The boat runs 24/7, usually every half hour. It runs more often in rush hours, hourly very late at night. And it's FREE.

The walk to the Ferry from our house is an easy downhill stroll. Coming back you may prefer to hop a bus 2-3 stops, or a cab for $5-7.

Staten Island: If you stay more than a few days, you may want to see the sights of Staten Island itself, New York's 'forgotten borough.' These include Snug Harbor, a 19th-century sailors' retirement home turned museum and cultural center, the Jacques Marchais Tibetan Art Museum, and the Alice Austen museum, a beautiful waterfront house devoted to a pioneering woman photographer. The south shore of Staten Island offers many miles of sandy beach and boardwalk if you want to take a few hours off from being a tourist. The island is famous for its Italian food, but newer immigrant groups are making their contributions as well. You will find the prices for restaurants, like lodging, far more reasonable than in Manhattan.

Perfect for a family

  • 4 of 5

The unit was perfect for our group, 3 teenagers and 2 adults. The boys took over the 3 rd floor where they had their own bright space ( 2 bedrooms) to hang out. The 2nd floor had a good size kitchen, living room with comfy pull out futon and another bedroom with a comfortable queen size. The unit was clean. It was the hottest day of the year we were there and unfortunately with the 2 air conditioners running on the 3rd floor, we couldn't use the one on the 2nd floor or the fuse would blow. Needless to say, it was very hot and sticky on the second floor. The house is situated at the peak of a hill with more stairs to get to the house then more stairs once inside the house. You must be in decent shape to handle the ascent. There was also road work going on directly in front of house and the jackhammers at 7 am were a little annoying since we didn't arrive until late. The walk to ferry is about 20 minutes and downhill on the way there, just remember it's uphill on the way back, especially after a long day in Manhattan. The parking lot at ferry terminal is very reasonable as another option. All in all I would stay here again, but on a cooler day.

Should be 4.5 stars

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the house for 12 days during July. To sum it up, it was a really nice stay. Actually the only thing we were really missing was a dishwasher (yes we knew), a table in the living room and probably a wardrobe for the downstairs bedroom.

The house is antique and it shows here and there (and it should to a certain extend). Updating the house is obviously a still ongoing process and will make the experience even better in the future. The neighborhood is good and still developing I would say as some of the houses around are getting or already got updates. We felt absolutely secure.

We did not try to walk to the ferry as the height difference was too much after a long Manhattan day full of walking. On weekend days we parked the car for $8 directly at the ferry (which itself is priceless - statue of liberty view twice a day for free and relax meanwhile) or $0 along the streets (unfortunately there is only very limited parking space there while the parking lot of the new outlet next to the ferry is still closed, so weekdays you will most likely get no parking space there) and weekdays two blocks back at St Marks Pl/Hyatt St on a parking lot for $15 the day.

Parking around the house never was a problem. Having a car, shopping was also no problem. We did not try anything nearby. Just make sure not to visit the Western Beef on Bay St. That is the most disgusting shop I've ever entered. Food never frozen especially counts for the ice cream. And if you do not trust me, please visit the restrooms for the full picture.

We went to several other stores which were all okay. The Staten Island Mall is very good and the Mills at Jersey Gardens offers good outlet shopping not too far away. The Midland Beach at Father Capodanno Boulevard is also very good.

The owners communication is perfect - so: Stay here! It's good.

Great space and great location for ferrying to NYC.

  • 4 of 5

We loved the apartment, a comfortable old house kind of space with an eat in kitchen and large living room area. Do be prepared for lots of stairs! We drove to the ferry to save our strength for them at the end of our long days of sight-seeing. Parking on the street was easy and accessible. The neighbors seemed to save our space for us each day.

Functional, roomy, efficient and quaint.

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for our family New York City vacation. The home is about a 15 minute walk to the Staten Island ferry which runs every 30 minutes and is free. While the area is not Beverly Hills – like, it was safe and relatively quiet. Parking was never an issue and most of the time we were able to park right in front of the home. There are a lot of stairs heading up to the home, but the trek is doable. There were plenty of towels and the kitchen is fully equipped. During my stay the stove was not functioning on the first night but the owner quickly replaced it by the afternoon of our second day. Access to the home was very easy. The large television and ample seating in the living room is definitely a plus. I would definitely book this place again. I really enjoyed my stay. Everything about the home was accurately described in the listing. Thanks for a great stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for staying. We do have one advantage over Beverly Hills: You can reach things by walking -- shops, restaurants, and of course the magnificent Ferry. We look forward to the next visit.

Good!

  • 4 of 5

Staten Island is a nice place, starting, and ending the day with seeing the Statue of liberty while sitting on the Staten Island ferry is an unforgettable experience.

The house has ups and downs.

Positive: Several grocery stores, Pizzerias, Restaurants are near and really good with good prices. The house has big rooms. The ferry is in a comfortable distance (less than 30 mins). Helen's family is helpful and kind.

Negative: the house is on a hill, so it's pretty tiring to walk up to it. You can see, and feel, that the house (furnitures, electronic devices, painting) is a bit old.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this. There is nothing we can do about the hill, except to say it is beautiful once you get up to it. You can make the journey home much easier with a taxi from the Ferry, which should cost maybe $8, or take a bus to the nearest corner. (You still have to climb a bit from there.) As for furnishings, since Petronella left we have bought a new kitchen stove and three new couches/love seats for the living room. That should brighten things up a bit. We want to keep the house as an affordable option for families and other medium-size groups, so we can't spend money infinitely. And the house IS old, built 1875 approx. But that is part of its charm.
