Rhubarb Hill is a woodsy retreat in beautiful Litchfield County. Relax in a charming farmhouse that is spacious and great for entertaining! The dining room, once a rustic keeping room, has a stone wall, fireplace, and stenciled hardwood floors. You will feel as if you stepped back in time. The living room is the perfect size for intimate conversations or larger gatherings. Wide hardwood floors predominate throughout this comfortable home. Cook up a great meal or snack in the well-equipped kitchen with a professional Garland gas stove, microwave, two dish washers and other culinary gadgets. There is a full basement with washer/dryer/ironing board.

Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and two baths. The master bath is spectacular with a Jacuzzi, European-style shower, twin sinks, and great views of mature hardwoods and old stone walls. Relax in a queen size four poster bed while looking out over the expansive yard. There is a huge walk-in closet with ample storage. The second bedroom has a shaker-like feel with its queen bed and two closets. The third bedroom is small with two twin beds, great for kids. The second upstairs bathroom has a vintage feel with full tub/shower and sink.

About Julie Swaner

I purchased this house is 2009 and have made a number of improvements, including a new roof, new heating system, new insulation, and upgrading of exterior doors. I did all of this while living in Utah with trips twice a year to CT.

I recently retired and returned to CT for part of the year. I live in Raleigh the other part of the year. I love to garden and this area is wonderful for lush perennials and spectacular trees. It is great for bird watching, exploring wild flowers, and gathering mushrooms after a heavy downpour.

I want to make sure you have a wonderful stay.

Julie Swaner purchased this farmhouse in 2009

Why Julie Swaner chose Lake Waramaug

Litchfield county is the loveliest part of Connecticut with its broad fields, meadows, and rolling ridges. It has fine stone walls, perfectly-sized towns, and very interesting diverse locals which includes artists, romantics, professionals, and backwoods bubbas. This region has great restaurants, cute taverns, museums, art galleries, and the most amazing inviting winding roads. Yet, it is so close to New York or Boston.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Nearby, there is access to Lake Waramaug for swimming (CT's largest natural lake), the Appalachian Trail for hiking, the Berkshires and Tanglewood for cultural events and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Housatonic River for its fly-fishing, and extraordinary antiquing in Litchfield County. This house is nestled among mature trees and lovely grounds. There are plenty of restaurants from cheap to very expensive, there are local vineyards, farmers' markets, bakeries, art galleries, and wine stores. Step out the front door and explore a marvelous vacation opportunity.

Or stay home and barbecue and then enjoy the evening patio for an outdoor firepit and 'smores.

Perfect week in the country

  • 5 of 5

We spent a perfect week on Rhubarb Hill in May. The gardens were beautiful and the kids loved playing outdoors. We made s'mores in the fire pit, ate dinner in the dining room with the doors flung wide open, and enjoyed all the house had to offer. It was located in a perfect place for us to get out to different areas of the northwest corner of CT -- a covered bridge, water falls, a farm where my kids held baby chicks, and a daffodil farm. I highly recommend this rental!

Wonderful getaway. After a few days we felt like we were at home. We spent 2 weeks and could have stayed on for another 2 weeks. Great location and all the comforts of home. Amazing kitchen and master bedroom with large and fabulous en suite bath.

Owner was very responsive to any requests. Would highly recommend without reservation.

Weekend in New England

  • 5 of 5

This house is warm, beautiful and very comfortable. We had a wedding / family reunion in Warren over the weekend and we gathered from far and wide to see each other. Four of our group stayed at this property and it was wonderful. I could not recommend it more highly and would stay here again without hesitation.

Great relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We arrived all type A with many plans to hike and swim, ended up enjoying the comfort of the house, cooking, hanging out together. Switching from indoor seating for outdoor, enjoying cooking together in the very well equipped kitchen, and eating.

We did do some biking and swimming, after all.

We'll surely be back again!

Lovely home, beautiful yard, nice town

  • 5 of 5

This 1850s farmhouse is really lovely, spotlessly clean, and was very comfortable for the 5 of us (2 adults, 3 kids). The house and grounds are even nicer than the photos, and there were all kinds of pleasantly unexpected extra details. The master bedroom is beautiful, and the master bath is huge and fabulous. The 2 other bedrooms are also nice: one is great for 2 kids, the other pretty room, with a large queen, could easily work for a couple. In addition to the pleasant outdoor area shown in the photos, there is an outdoor table just off the kitchen, which isn't shown. The kitchen really has *everything* that a cook could possibly want, down to utensils for escargot! We had a great hike at Steep Rock (too early in the year to swim at Lake Waramaug) - be sure to stop at the nearby Pantry for picnic supplies.

This was a really wonderful, relaxing weekend at a charming, and very comfortable house!
