On a Ledge or the "Mountain House" as we call it, is located on the highlands of the Roan in beautiful Roan Mountain, Tennessee.
Our Mountain House is at 4200 feet elevation, overlooking the beautiful Heaton Creek valley. Full length covered porches with a swing and plenty of comfortable chairs offer majestic mountain and valley views and great opportunities to enjoy our cool mountain breezes.
The Cherokee National Forest is a few hundred yards away in most directions and, as the crow flies, the Appalachian trail is less than 2 miles away. By road, Carvers Gap, and the Rhododendron Gardens are 3 miles. The Mountain House is minutes above the Roan Mountain State Park which offers swimming pool, tennis courts, camping, hiking, and fishing. Actually, several hundred miles of trout fishing streams (including the trophy trout designated Watauga river) are within a 30 mile radius.
We are conveniently located just 35 minutes away from the ski resorts, restaurants, and shopping of Banner Elk, Boone, and Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
If you are sitting on our back porch enjoying the view, Nascar racing will seem a world away.....in fact, the Bristol Raceway is a pleasant 50 minute drive away.
We've made our Mountain House comfortable and cozy.....you'll feel right at home, and will want to come back often.
We hope you come visit,
Richard and Martha

We grew up close to the Smokey Mountains and our home is in Maryville, Tn. We bought the Mountain House in 1998 and fell in love with th view and Roan Mountain. So much so that in 2005 when a 75 year old flooded out building in the village of Roan Mountain came up "for sale" we bought it, completely renovated and opened Mad Martha's Cafe and Twigs which sells antiques and "all things of the mountains".
We especially enjoy the peacefulness and quiet beauty of Roan Mountain but when we want fine dining or shopping Elizabethton and Johnson City are just 35 minutes down the mountain and Banner Elk, Boone, and Blowing Rock are 35 minutes up the mountain in North Carolina. We'd love to have you come for a visit to our Mountain House and have lunch at Mad Martha's

Dear Richard and Martha,
Thanks for opening your doors to us. Your cabin is the perfect spot to get away from it ALL. We really enjoyed the views and will always have wonderful memories of our "cabin in the clouds".
We'll definitely be back...it felt just like being home.
Watching the valley come to life as the lights come on in the evening is magical! Sitting on a beautiful deck on the top of a mountain is so relaxing. This house is theme decorated. Every detail is covered..The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could need. The house sleeps 10 to 12 so it is a good place for friends and family to gather. The area is close to the Appalachian Trail so if adventure is on your thing this house has it covered. I have also been here is the spring for the Rhododendron Festival. Beautiful. I love the mountain house and look forward to my return visit.
This cabin is amazing! I stayed here with several other couples (10 people total). We loved the Roan Mountain themed decorations and the charm of this home. It is actually quite large – there are 2 full back porches that overlook the valley. The view was breathtaking! The hot tub was just what I needed after a stressful week at work.
This would be a great place for a large family too. We were all able to have dinner together around the dining room table and there were more than enough dishes, glasses, mugs, silverware, cooking utensils, etc. The bathrooms were also clean and well stocked with linens.
While we were there, we played disc golf and tennis in the park at the bottom of the mountain (only a few miles away). We also drove to Damascus, VA (a little over an hour) where we rented bikes and rode the Virginia Creeper Trail. Then we saw a play at the historic Barter Theatre in Abington. It was an awesome weekend!
Richard and Martha (the owners) told us that they have a few other properties in the area that are not listed on VRBO. If this cabin is booked or if you are looking for something of a different size/price, you should contact them.
We’ve actually already booked our return trip! :)
