About Donna Pennoyer

We moved here from Portland when the kids were little and plan on staying here to watch our grandchildren enjoy our lake My children grew up making fairy houses in the woods and catching salamander and learning to waterski in their front yard. My husband favorite quote is 'We live here!'

Donna Pennoyer purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Donna Pennoyer chose Windham

We fell in love with this view the minute we saw it. With in a few months of us buying our house, the camp next door became available so we bought it and became the proud owner of two properties on Highland Lake. We are close enough to enjoy Portland and all it offers and still be able to relax at the end of the day and feel like we are miles away from work.

What makes this cottage unique

Nothing is better than sitting by the fire and watching the moon rise over the tree.

Peaceful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

I was amazed to find a place that was available so late in the season, but thankful I did. Our own family property was more or less destroyed over winter and we didn't find out until after I was booked to come from California.

This camp is in a great location and central to where we spent most our time,, Down in the Portland/Scarborough area, as well as the Sebago and Panther Pond region. The location was quiet with very little, to no vehicle traffic was heard. There were moments throughout the week we did notice limited air traffic from I assume Portand Jetport, but it seemed few and far between. Over all a peaceful, quiet location (minus the kids I brought with me! j/k).

The kids, two 15 year olds and a 5 year old, enjoyed access to the Kayaks and the paddle boat, and everyone made several swims to and from the floats. The property has a dock to use. The water is pretty shallow, no jumping from said dock,, and my 5 yr old was able to walk out several yards and still touch bottom which was good for us. I am assuming the lake may be a bit low though so I don't know if that is really normal.

As others have mentioned the staircase that goes to the basement is steep and not easy to navigate,, though I can't see a better way of doing it. With minimum reasons to go down there,, I just went around the outside to the exterior entry. Beds were comfortable, and the place was clean.

I used the little patio a lot,, great place to sit and chill and watch the lake and kids. We did fire up the little fire pit one night.

Owner was helpful and very quick to respond to any communications that were sent.

All in all, I recommend this camp, and would not shy away from staying again.

Perfect place for a group of 4-6

  • 5 of 5

Our family needed a place to stay for a week, traveling from CA and TN. We didn't want to live in a hotel for a week, so we found this place. It turned out to be way better than we even expected.

The beds were surprisingly comfortable for a rental place - something that you don't often find, and something that can be very important. Kitchen was pretty well stocked with cookware for our family to "dine in" during our stay. Good size seating area and table.

There's also an outside table that overlooks the water, which was beautiful to eat at early in the morning while the sun was rising. Near the table is a fire pit with a healthy supply of outdoor chairs. We had a great evening for hours around the campfire right on the water. There are also some trees in the same "back yard" area that are perfect for hammocking just a few feet from the water. There are kayaks, oars, and life jackets just 30 feet from the water, and a good size lake with very calm water and minimal traffic where you can go explore.

I'm rating the property 5 stars, and we'll likely stay here again, but it wouldn't be a thorough review without mentioning a couple of minor faults. The only real problem that we had was with parking. There's only parking for 2 vehicles, and probably only 1 if you have an oversize SUV. It was a tight fit with a van and a small hatchback. Fortunately the road is very, very low traffic, so if you maneuver VERY carefully, you can maybe squeeze in a 3rd small car if you're willing to block in the other two vehicles, and risk your car sticking about a foot or so out into the low traffic road. A little more space would have been nice, but we made due. Certainly not a major problem, and nothing that would prevent us from staying here again. This is no fault of the owners - there's not really anything that could be done to expand without major work.

A couple other VERY small things: the stairs to the basement are somewhat challenging to navigate, and the air hockey table in the basement is only about half functional. The stairs are very steep and narrow with a head-bashing hazard if you're over 5'8". If you have any limited-mobility people staying at the cabin, I would suggest sleeping on the main level rather than the basement. The air hockey table has minimal air, and the puck often just gets stuck in a number of places. As long as you're not expecting to have a high stakes tournament on the table, it can still be fun. Foosball is in good shape.
