My husband and I began visiting Costa Rica over 20 years ago. Our 1st home there was located on the eastern slope of the Central Valley purchased in 1992. From there we began travelling and exploring the country. We have seen just about all of it; some parts of it many times. There are beautiful beaches up and down both coasts but Playa Tambor kept 'calling' us back. We finally relocated to Tambor in 1997 and have been 'on the beach' there ever since. The town is small, but has anything and everything you could want or need within walking distance of our home--several bars/restaurants, Super Lapa Mercado, souvenir shops, church and school, 2 bus stops, the Muelle (Pier) where you can buy your freshly caught fish every day of the year--and every Saturday morning the Organic Produce market has the best vegetables, fruits, whole grain breads and cheeses that Costa Rica has to offer! Many necessities, conveniences and activities are within minutes--Sansa airstrip, 2 golf courses, hiking, larger towns for larger shopping, 24 hour medical services, etc.
The peace and tranquility of Tambor is unsurpassed...... I believe it's positioning on the far inside of the Bahia Ballena (Whale Bay) off the Gulf of Nicoya provides a quieter existence. Yes, the open horizons and pounding surf of other beach towns are nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!!
Would have appreciated better directions to property. Alternative ways to communicate with house manager as phones did not work and WiFi not reliable. Description of property was confusing. There's a two bedroom casita and a duplex with two studio apartments. It was unclear what I had rented.
This was our second 2 week trip to Tambor, Costa Rica. We were 2 couples. The weather of course was absolutely beautiful. We were 2 couples and stayed in the Casita at the back of the property beside the beautiful refreshing pool.
The landscaping is breathtaking! Property owner has done a fabulous job! The beach is just a 1 minute walk from the door, we enjoyed morning or late afternoon walks on the beach when the temperature and sun were a little less hot. You can walk for miles.
The homeowners were there during our stay and were extremely accommodating and helpful to provide information and assistance when asked regarding contacts for tours, best places to shop for groceries, etc.
We had a car which we would recommend but not a definite necessity, as you could book local excursions in Tambor which is a 5 minute walk from the property. There is also a small grocery store located in Tambor, as well as several restaurants which are all within walking distance.
If you intend to consume alcohol, we strongly suggest you purchase it at the duty free shop prior to leaving the San Jose airport, as it is a lot cheaper there.
Accommodations were very clean and well kept. The casita is not equipped with air conditioning, however, all rooms are equipped with ceiling fans (including the outdoor eating area) and we found this to be sufficient (at least during the month of February).
The kitchen was well equipped and had all the necessities.
It was a good location to go out on day trips to Montezuma, Mal Pais and Cobano.
Lots of Howler monkeys and Macaws can be seen (and heard!) around the property.
The property backs onto the main road used to travel from the ferry in Paquera to Malpais, Cobano and Montezuma. The only negative feature was that sometimes vehicular traffic could be a little loud early in the morning and late at night when vehicles were passing through coming or going to catch the ferry. The annual rodeo was on in Cobano during our stay which more than likely added to the volume of traffic during our stay. After a couple of nights when we got totally relaxed and into vacation mode, we seemed to tune this out!
If you're looking for a very relaxing and slower paced place to stay away from the busier populated areas such as Montezuma and Malpais, this is the perfect spot! We will definitely be returning!
Stayed here in Jan. 2012 loved it. The house is close to the local store for some groceries and some local restaurants so a car is not needed but is nice to have. the house was just as expected every thing was clean and worked well. The owners are easy to work with and Neisy the manager is a joy. the pool was inviting and the beach is right out your back door. the gardens are beautiful and well kept. We would stay here again for sure.
Lovely, peaceful little place. Our 5th visit to Tambor and this has been our favorite place so far. Clean, well maintained, and secure. The gardens were beautiful and the pool a refreshing break. Great to fall asleep to the noise of the waves and wake to the sound of monkeys. Kitchen facilities were good, although we chose to enjoy our dinners at local restaurants. We felt very welcome and comfortable. Thanks especially for having "coffee" fixings available. It was so nice to wake up after a long day of travelling and be able to enjoy a cup of coffee.
