Relax in this serene 5+ acre setting while Elk, Deer, and Moose wander through the Ponderosa Pines. Enjoy the stunning drive following the winding West Fork river, coming upon the breathtaking Painted Rocks Lake, and a little further to mile marker 26. 7 miles further along the road is the Idaho boarder. The drive alone is breathtaking.
March through November you'll see fly fishermen along the West Fork River and the many creeks that flow that flow into the river trying to coax five different species of trout
Summer nights are frequently in the mid 40's with days in the dry 70's at this elevation of 4,800. The road is well kept in winter, allowing easy driving access to Lost Trail Ski Resort on the MT/ID border where you'll discover great skiing and snowboarding. It's locally owned, so come prepared with equipment or stop in Hamilton and get stocked up at Bob Ward's Outdoor store that carries everything for the year round avid outdoors sports person.
Our favorite activities are fly fishing the West Fork River and Overwich Creek, hiking, and riding ATV's. There is nearly 3,000 miles of Forest Service trails plus the 101mi Magruder Road Corridor which separates the 1.1mm acre Bitterroot-Selway Wilderness from the 2.3mm acre Frank Church River - River of No Return Wilderness.
Or, simply enjoy the front porch swing and read a good book. Afternoon naps are wonderful, especially with the refreshing mountain air, snuggled under a wonderful down comforter. There's also plenty of sightseeing to do from Glacier National Park to historic battle sights, and Hamilton's famous Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.

About Gary Plum
I have been exploring Montana, Colorado and Idaho since 1966. When we found the Bitterroot Valley, we fell in love with the land and the people of Ravalli County. Home is Florida for us, but our hearts are in the Bitterroot Valley.
Gary Plum purchased this Cabin in 2010
Why Gary Plum chose Darby
The West Fork area is full of treasures just waiting to be discovered. There are over 3,000 miles of trails to ride, and we haven't even discovered the winter activities yet! All the locals tell us how great the local ski slopes at Lost Trail are for snowboarding and downhill skiing. Plus, there are thousands of miles to ride snowmobiles that await our exploration this winter.
What makes this Cabin unique
I love exploring the high mountain lakes, trails, and creeks that surround the West Fork area. Sleeping is so refreshing with the fresh mountain air under the down comforters and memory foam topped beds.

One of the best family weekends?
We were fortunate to find this place available for a last minute family trip. This lodge is out of the way, which was perfect. The lodge, guest house, and bunkhouse was perfect for our group, plenty of space and ability to split off different family units for sleeping. The lodge was so nice for gathering for meals. The pavilion and fire pit also was perfect! The views from the property were beautiful. The outside grounds were great for playing games!
We will return again!
Thank you for taking the time to review our home away from home.
Amazing cabin that has all the amenities needed to have a great time in MT.
We took a cold wet hike on Sam Billings trail which was really amazing to see the gushing river from the run off from the mountain snow melting.
Attempted to take the back road to Idaho, but 30 miles in road was blocked with snow. Eventually ended up at Salmon, Idaho. Ate lunch at the local brewery (Bertram's Salmon Valley Brewery) and took a short look around. The driving was so scenic and we experienced all four seasons. We saw a lot of local wildlife, Bison, Elk , Deer, Ground Squirrel, Marmots, American Mink and Big Horn Sheep. Would recommend a day trip to Salmon, Idaho during your stay.
Another day we took another hair raising trail around Painted Rocks Loop. Great views and we actually saw a black bear within the first 10 minutes of the drive. We also saw Ground Squirrels, Chipmunks, and more deers. Noticed several types of paw prints in the snow, which were black bear, cougar and Grizzly Bear. Once we got back to the cabin we decided to cook out and my mum and dad got to experience Smores for the first time. The Jigsaws in the cabin have been great for our indoor evening entertainment.
Attempted to get to Horse Creek Hot Spring but we were denied by the snow 80% into our adventure. So what do u do when your plans change?.......... Hit the local brewery (Bandit Brewing Co) and check our the local bar (Sawmill Saloon, Darby).
We all had a great experience and there were so many highlights to the trip. Would defiantly recommend Coal Creek Cabin we can guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Awesome property, awesome cabins, awesome views, awesome wildlife. I would highly recommend it.
The experience was awesome. The mountains were awesome. The views were awesome.
My new favorite in Montana
Property beautiful and isolated. Hiking trails are great and not too extreme. We were there in early November. It rained some and snowed some and was very sunny on the other days. A photographer's paradise since views and terrain change every few miles. We wore our hunter orange hats since it was hunting season and we wanted to not look like a target. We saw lots of elk and several kinds of footprints in the snow (yet to be identified). We stayed in the main cabin which I would have been content spending the entire day with books and games, fireplace, etc. The hot tub was great and in general everything worked and was in good shape. We have concluded that we need to come back in summer since the reservoir is beautiful and there is apparently a lot of boating and so forth then. Although we went to a ski resort nearby which had plenty of snow, it was not open for season yet. Also, the cabin was very well stocked in everything. I could have made a cake from scratch if I'd had time! Another big plus: the owner is a real nice guy an gave us lots of info on the area activities and the workings of things on and off the property. It was a great week I definitely recommend it.
Fantastic getaway in the mountains!
We had an amazing time! Mother Nature at her finest! Lots of wildlife viewing, elk bugling, fly fishing, scenic driving and just relaxing in the mountains, (and snow in September! ). Can't think of a thing I would have changed! This property is perfect for a couples getaway or a big group! Plenty of space for privacy and solitude! Well equipped with all the comforts of home!!
Beautiful property and great space for a large group
Thanks Gary for a great vacation. The property and surrounding area is beautiful. This was a great setting for a place to get away from it all and relax. Use of all three cabins was perfect for our group of 13. Plenty of room for everyone to gather for meals at the main cabin, but also some privacy for couples to sleep in different buildings.
We loved the large hot tub, front porch and fire pit. The kids stretched a net between two trees and had a great time playing volleyball. Short drive to a nice swimming beach at the lake too.
Amazing fly fishing on the West Fork of the Bitterroot River; great cut throat, rainbows, cut bows and brown trout all around in the creeks and rivers. Guide trips available from numerous professionals. Gym, gas, hunting supplies in Darby; grocery stores, salon/tanning beds, shopping, golf in Hamilton. Swimming and water activities in Painted Rocks Lake near cabin and Lake Como in Hamilton. The Bitterroot Chamber: has a very good video that gives you an idea of what there is to see and do in the area
