Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

This is not a vacation home that we built as much as it is an experience that we created. Please read our guest reviews!

As seen in Sunset and Dwell Magazines, the Lotus Lake House is a completely 'green' exclusive home designed by the award-winning architect Michelle Kaufmann. Its sleek & modern with accordian-style glass walls that completely open to the deck and views of the lake. Lots of windows and cool welcoming tones. We are completely off-grid and have been awarded 'Build it Green' and 'Keep the Sierra Green' certification.

We're situated on 7 acres of private forested property. We cleared just enough trees to have fabulous views of Rollins Lake or instead of just gazing, hike the private trail from the deck to the lake and hop in the canoe we provide guests. With the glass 'Nano' walls open to the outdoors - indoor and outdoor living is blended. No neighbors or other structures in sight! Just the Sierra Mountains, trees, deep blue water, deer, owls, raptors and the ocassional honking geese.

Whether you are on the deck sipping coffee and watching the beautiful sunrise over the mountains, reading, sipping a drink at sunset or star gazing at night, the experience is magical.

Our home is ideally suited for a romantic get-away, or for a couple of good friends or close family members who just need a retreat from the stresses of daily life. Sit on the deck and enjoy the water activity during the summer, swim in the lake or come off season when it's absolutely still. Ideal for writer/artist retreat. Only earth-friendly products are used so it's perfect for people with chemical sensitivities.

For those who want to support the environment while staying in an exclusive and unique property, you can't ask for more. You'll feel like you are in a treehouse. As one of our guests said, 'if you need to relearn how to breathe, this place will teach you'!

Come experience off-the-grid living in luxury!

The Lotus Lake House was the showcase home at the 2007 West Coast Green Show in San Francisco.

Please read our guest comments as they describe the experience better than we ever could!!

About Tod duBois

We are very interested in doing our part to protect our planet and the environment. Both refugees from the corporate world in Silicon Valley where we held demanding jobs we enjoyed building our dream eco-friendly vacation home in the middle of a forest overlooking beautiful Rollins Lake. Tod designed the off-grid system himself and despite his wife's initial trepidation, it's amazing! This is our home and when it's not rented we delight in escaping the Bay Area for the beauty and simplicity of its zen-like qualities.

Tod duBois purchased this house in 2009

Why Tod duBois chose Gold Country / High Sierra

We love the Sierras and a number of years ago bought 8 acres in the forest overlooking Rollins Lake with the intent of building a low carbon-footprint vacation home that would be all about the views. Although our home is private & secluded we liked that we are within 10 minutes of wineries, the quaint artist town of Nevada City, the historic Gold Rush town of Grass Valley, hiking, exploring the gold mines, and organic farms and only 45 minutes to Sugar Bowl Ski resort.

What makes this house unique

You will come away rejuvenated, even after just 2 days! As one of our guests wrote: 'If you need to learn how to breathe again, this place will teach you'. Most of our guests have plans to do lots of things and wind up not leaving the house! The seclusion, the tree-house feel, the lake views and access to the lake and a canoe make this a very special getaway for 2.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to stay at this wonderful home in the woods! There is nothing like waking up to birds chirping and the smell of trees. It is so calm here and we are loving it. Staying in your home has really made us more aware of our energy usage and hopefully that will follow us home. Our dog has been just as happy as we have been and she has discovered that the only thing more fun than chasing squirrels is chasing lizards! Thank you so much! We look forward to coming back and telling everyone we know.

Tranquility found.

  • 5 of 5

Tod's commitment to excellence showed through and through during our stay. The pre-fab was amazingly well constructed and at times left us wondering if it really was a pre-fab. The house performed as advertised, and the views did not disappoint. Modern, contemporary, and escape and hidden gem is how I would describe this property. 4G/LTE coverage worked well, and the Chicago Park neighborhood is charming. If you're thinking about staying here, I would encourage you to do so.

We'll be back - with a caveat

  • 5 of 5

This place is beautiful! It feels very secluded and the photos are accurate of what you can expect. The owner, Tod and property manger, Debbie were both very accommodating and pleasant to deal with. We will definitely be back...but with a caveat.

I didn't see this mentioned by other reviewers but it's worth noting that Rollins Lakeside Inn is a cabin rental resort at the bottom of the driveway and you basically have to cut through their property to access this property.

There was a wedding planned for one of the evenings that we were there and it caused a bit of confusion because the people throwing the wedding didn't want us driving through while the wedding was going on. It was from 3pm-11pm.

I let Tod and Debbie know about this unexpected conflict and they quickly contacted the owners of Rollins Lakeside Inn and settled things (thanks again Tod and Debbie). We agreed to not drive through during the ceremony, which was only a 30 minute window.

In the end, this didn't cause much of an inconvenience for us but it did put me in an awkward position when the pushy Mom of the bride wasn't happy with me not being able to commit to not leave the property all night, but I digress.

The wedding did go on until 11pm, with amplified music and incredibly loud fireworks (we assume the fireworks were from the wedding since they were going off right overhead) which scared the hell out of our dog and baby.

This didn't necessarily put a big damper on our trip—we'd love to come back—but we were looking forward to sitting on the deck and enjoying the peace and quiet that night. We live in downtown Oakland, CA and it's a very noisy area. Getting away from it all was the point of this trip. Instead, that night, we stayed inside where most of the partying and music was drowned out and watched a couple of movies.

Debbie let us have a late checkout the next day which really helped make up for the wedding situation.

If you're looking for a beautiful home with seclusion and amazing views, this place is perfect...as long as the neighbors aren't hosting a wedding.

The owners made living of the grid luxurious and also seamless with nature. Words cannot explain the beauty of the surroundings and the joy of the solitude.

Peaceful and Serene

  • 4 of 5

I wish we would have had another day to stay and enjoy the place. Spent a whole day checking out Nevada City and Grass Valley and not much time spent relaxing at the Lotus house. Went down to the lake on the pathway, but saw a dead tree blocking the pathway, so had to make a slight detour around it. Could not figure out how to use the propane heater on the deck, i guess the wording is worn off. Maybe next time if we get another opportunity to use. We both like how secluded the home felt and would really enjoy finding a place like this as our retirement home.

thank you for allowing us to stay and hopefully next time we might get to use the canoe or at least go for a swim.

Relaxing Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My kids and I had a wonderful stay at the Lotus Lake House. We woke up and wrote every morning sitting on the deck. It is a great place for creativity and relaxation. We did not want to leave. I highly recommend staying there and we will definitely return again.
