About Hillary Timmons

This home has been in our family since the 1970's but it was constructed in the 20's. We completely renovated it in 2001 but have never rented it out. Unfortunately, our family has become smaller, the children have grown and we now have very little time to enjoy it. We hope other folks will love it as we do and make fond vacation memories. Mott's Mountain Laurel is dedicated in memory of the most wonderful wife, mother and Meme.

Hillary Timmons purchased this house in 1999

Why Hillary Timmons chose North Carolina

Our family considered many different properties in many different mountain locations before buying a vacation get-away but found this Bearwallow Mountain home to have the MOST stunning views! Conveniently located between Asheville and Hendersonville, our home is also just a short drive from shopping, entertainment and many natural wonders. We can't wait for you to enjoy the quaint shops of Chimney Rock, Bat Cave and the beach and restaurants of Lake Lure!!

What makes this house unique

Swimming (Sliding Rock and Lake Lure), skiing, hiking, climbing, bird and animal watching, exploring, cable car sight-seeing, and antiquing are only a few activities which can be enjoyed while vacationing at our mountain home.

Sisters Birthday Getaway

  • 3 of 5

We recently rented this cabin to celebrate a 50th Birthday. We had a wonderful trip and experienced a part of the country we had never had the pleasure of visiting. Our week provided wonderful weather and spectacular leaf viewing.

Here is our review of the property and reasons it didn't receive the top rating.

PROS:

-The owners were great to work with, they answered all questions, provided information about area attractions, and were very helpful in extending our checkout time to accommodate a variety of flight times. You could tell they take pride in their property.

-The cabin was the perfect size for 5 people. It had plenty of sleeping space & living space. The kitchen and eating areas provided plenty of room to be together and not be right on top of each other.

-True to the online pictures you are getting comfortable cabin living with nice porch rockers.

-The location of the cabin will definitely give you a true in the mountains experience.

CONS:

-The cabin had a very bad and over powering smell every time you entered. Not really sure anything short of washing everything and cleaning carpets would get rid of the smell. Blankets in the basket by the fireplace were so bad they were pretty much unusable. We did open windows and doors to try to remove some of the smell but it was October and we couldn't leave them open for extended periods of time. It was bad enough by the time we left the clothing in suitcases had to be washed when returning home even those unworn. This may not be an issue during other times of the year when things can be opened but right now it was a big issue. Allergy sufferers may have problems staying here.

-A very short supply of paper products, had to buy one extra roll of toilet paper to get through the last day of our stay.

-A lot of trees and a fairly steep hillside have to be navigated to get to the steam, we found no path or access.

-The cabin description list mountain views - there is a very nice mountain view but you must first look through the power lines in front of the porch. This is why there is a very strategically taken picture of the porch but not a picture of the view.

-The last part of the driveway is a little tricky so arriving in daylight the first time is a very good idea.

Overall we had a very nice time and enjoyed our time here and maybe during a different time of year would stay here again. These are a few things we thought needed to be addressed. A 3.5 rating isn't available.

Just wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

The home was everything we could have hoped for and more. Everyone in our party, including our two elderly family members, were so thrilled with the home and it's amenities that we are already planning on coming back for a longer stay, We were so impressed with the amount of entertainment the cabin offered, from the very large selection of board games to the Xbox, and the thoughtful touches and welcome basket they included. They even have a cabinet dedicated for your dog! The decor is homey and comfortable without being kitschy, and you truly feel like you're at home. If you choose this home, you won't regret it. The house is on the mountain, so don't be suprised when you see the driveway, but have no fear-you will have no problems getting up the driveway. We made it up no problem with our minivan packed full of people and suitcases. You will not be sorry if you choose this amazing home! Thank you to the Timmons for opening up their awesome home!

Amazing Mountain Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here a week and had so much fun. The house was terrific, and we loved sitting out on the porch and hearing the sounds and smelling the smells of North Carolina in the mountains.

The house was definitely as advertised. Very roomy and welcoming, with lots to do inside, like board games, movies, and video games, though we didn't use these. There is a grocery store down the mountain 5 or 10 minutes towards Asheville, and a couple of other stands on the way where we bought fresh fruits and vegetables.

The highlight for me was hiking up the mountain behind the house. It took us a couple tries as the path dies out a little right before the top but once we persevered we found it was only a short 30 minutes from the house and you're at a saddle between two peaks. There's a pasture there with cows, apple trees, and a great view. You can see all the way to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. One hike we even continued up the mountain and ended up right at the top past a bunch of antennae and aerials. It was like a scene from the Sound of Music (if it were set in Appalachia), standing in a field with the mountain falling away on both sides away from us.

My only criticism would be that there should be slightly more detailed directions to get to the house. The first time we weren't entirely sure which branch of the drive to take right below the house, and ended up in a dead-end in someone's driveway with a tricky reversing job down a steep road.

Best Vacation Ever!!!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at the cabin. The location was perfect, driving distance to Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and lots of other stuff! At the same time, the cabin was secluded enough that we mostly enjoyed lounging on the porch, listening to the crickets and hummingbirds. We hope to be back soon!!

Paradise Found

  • 5 of 5

While I tell you about this adventure please keep in mind that the hubby, the canine kid and I were looking for a peaceful escape far, far away from work, Fox News, and alarm clocks. As a beach lover I "took one for the team" and picked the mountain house over a beach escape to please my other-half. Now, having said that I will tell you that this mountain home vacation was more wonderful than any beach vacation I have ever had. The house is equipped with everything you will need, it is move in ready! Soak in the claw foot tub, enjoy the antique furniture while you have access to all of the high-tech you will need. The flat screens, DVDs, CDs, XBox, WiFi, kitchen appliances (more than I have in my own kitchen!), rocking chairs on the porch, and a pond to spend a lazy day by. But, if it is a sight-seeing adventure you are after-this is the place too! Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Asheville and more are at the foot of the mountain with shopping, dining , and photo opportunities at every turn. The place is immaculate, the beautiful pictures of the interior and exterior are exactly what you will find when you arrive. We were surprised to find that our host/hostess had planned our first evening by leaving a "welcome gift" on the kitchen counter. The view of the mountain from the porch was awesome, the wine was perfect too. After just one day on the mountain my husband, the geek-nerd-computer-engineer, picked me a boquet of wild flowers! I would recommend this home for anyone wanting to relax and listen to the mountain stream OR hop up and go see the sights in town. There is no way you can go wrong, it is honestly the best vacation we have had in a long time. Many thanks to Hillary and Todd for this awesome escape.
