Why Sarah Thomson chose New York

The Grey Barn is now SOLAR! We are certified as a green business using energy efficient appliances and recyclable products. You can help by composting and recycling while you are here if you like, we make it easy! We have a farm 4 miles down the road and often drop off fresh seasonal organic vegetables to our guests. Our guests love the cheerful open nature of the house and central location to the Lake , Universities and Wine Trail.

Read the guest comments to see for yourself if this is the house for you. We hope so!

What makes this house unique

The Grey Barn is a self catering private house that you will call your home while you are here. We live 4 miles away and can help when needed or give our suggestions as to what to do while you are here.

People love the open floor plan and always say it is much larger than the pictures suggest. Guests love the comfort and decor of the house and is a real hit with reunions for families, small weddings and gatherings. I tell guests they need not bring anything except food and themselves.

Wherever you are coming from you will appreciate the relaxed atmosphere of The Grey Barn.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This is a great place to stay! We had 8 people (two kids) staying and it worked out great. They have a big upstairs for those who want a little more privacy or need more space. The whole place is clean and had bright, happy colors and artwork on the wall. They had all of the amenities that you need for a short stay, including games and such for kids. We were able to get into Ithaca within 10 minutes. I would definitely rent this place again. VRBO Referral Jenny(Chicago )

The Grey Barn

  • 5 of 5

The Grey Barn is everything it promises to be, and was the perfect place for our family to gather for our daughter's wedding at Cornell. The open floor plan more than accommodated the 30+ people we entertained for a pre-wedding barbeque. (It rained that evening, and everyone HAD to be inside.) The house features a kitchen that is fully stocked with cooking and dining utensils. There is a large dining area and comfortable furniture arranged in inviting conversation circles in the great room. The owners have furnished this house with many special touches to make visitors feel completely at home; live plants, interesting artwork, family board games, radio, TV, etc. The bedrooms are large and very comfortable. Beautiful linens, comforters, pillows, and thick, soft towels are furnished. The owners are very nice and were available at all hours. The house was clean and beds were freshly made when we arrived. The landscaping is attractive and well maintained. The property is just a few minutes outside of Ithaca in a quiet, private rural area; about a 15 minute drive to The Commons downtown, or Cornell University campus. There are shopping malls, a movie theater complex and restaurants just minutes away. We would definitely rent this house again... and would stay longer next time!

The grey barn is a gem!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the grey barn! It was very comfortable with everything we needed for our stay. The location is very convenient to Ithaca for Cornell or Ithaca College events, and the setting lovely with sunset views over the cornfields. We would love to return.

Clean, eco-friendly home with lots of room.

  • 4 of 5

The grey barn has a great layout: large open kitchen-dining-social area, encourages a lovely social environment. Our daughters are very Eco minded so the solar energy, and composting were both delightful additions.

Kitchen is well stocked. Sarah was quite helpful with kayak rental location as well as stopping by to make sure all was well.

The only drawback was that the barn is on a very busy county road: advantage was easy access to getting places but a bit noise at night in back bedroom.

We enjoyed our family get together here.

Owner's Response: Thank you Katherine for your review. We have enjoyed the solar panels and of course the compost is what is feeding the gardens! I am glad you got a chance to kayak as the lake is really the gem of Ithaca. We continue to plant trees in hope of blocking the road and noise, they are growing! Thank you for staying with us and we hope you will consider us again if you are in the area. Take care, Sarah

Stay in Ithaca

  • 5 of 5

My family of 7 stayed at this delightful place surrounded by fields of beautiful flowers, corn and sunflowers. The sunsets were gorgeous to view from the yard. We loved our stay here. We had no television so we played board games for hours. It was very peaceful with lots of space. It was a very delightful and charming home.

The Gray Barn---Pristine & Superior

  • 5 of 5

We arranged our stay at the Gray Barn to accompany a Four Day stay in Ithaca for our son's wedding. It was our home away from home ---everywhere we looked both inside and out the Gray Barn had everything we needed to accommodate our stay. The oversize kitchen helped me prepare an Italian dinner on the first night and allowed me to serve that dinner with ease. The outside gardens allowed us to toast the soon to be bride and groom in comfort and delight.

We easily had enough room to sleep 8 and stayed cool of the heat and humidity of late July. The beauty of the home and setting allowed us to relax and remain stress free as we managed the chaos and activities of the wedding .The Gray Barn was the perfect place to be and a place we will return again. Thank you, Sarah and Keith.

Warmest Regards,

Michael and Donna Nickitas

Enjoyable graduation weekend!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at The Grey Barn for our daughter's graduation from Cornell. It was the perfect place for our large family to gather for the weekend and spend time together. It had all the comforts of home, and the open layout and large table were perfect for family meals. Sarah was a pleasure to deal with and very accommodating. Overall, we had a great stay, and I would recommend The Grey Barn to anyone traveling to the Finger Lakes area!

The motto for Ithaca is ' Ithaca is gorges' This play on words reflects both the phenomenal gorges, no less than 6 of them within 15 miles and most within 7 miles. These fantastic gorges can be easily accessed to hike and some have swimming holes. Gorgeous is Cayuga Lake and surrounding area. The lake beckons you to swim, fish, boat or just watch its many moods. At The Grey Barn you will be on the Wine Trail, near the Cornell Plantations and Ornithology Lab.

If you are a biker you are in one of the top Mountain biking areas in NY and road biking can't be better.

You will be tempted by multiple restaurants with diverse cuisines nearby. However you may prefer to pick up local foods and cook them at home in the full large kitchen back at The Grey Barn.

If you are interested in vegetable farming we have an organic vegetable farm 4 miles down the road that we would be happy to show you and offer fresh produce in season.

However you spend your time you will want to return to see the area in a different season and light and we will welcome you back!
