A preservationist in all ways ,I spent 1 and a half years rehabbing the Manor , bringing it back to its original glory. The house then was listed on the Historic register in Sarasota County..Being an artist ,the Manor was a perfect canvas for my passion..I lived in the home for 8 years, and am now enjoying my guests in the Manor and gardens.
Katherine Kelly purchased this house in 1999

Such a beautifully designed and decorated home with a breath-taking yard. I felt as if I were in a secret garden; so peaceful in the mornings when I would sit on the patio and drink coffee. It is a haven.
We were in Sarasota for my son's graduation from New College. It was a busy several days and Sweet Mango Manor turned out to be the perfect place to stay. We didn't have much time for sightseeing - but we didn't feel deprived because staying at Sweet Mango is like being on vacation anyway. The manor is very spacious and exquisitely decorated with rooms for every mood. We loved sitting out on the covered veranda watching the birds at the feeder and eating our breakfast. That same veranda was a great spot to sip wine in the evening. The kitchen is extremely well appointed and the elegant dining room table is long enough so you can invite guests over for a pleasant dinner which is exactly what we did. You can't do that at a hotel! There are two and a half beautiful bathrooms including one soaking tub. Everything is clean and the owner is so pleasant. A friendly spa is within walking distance, Whole Foods is about a mile away and you are very close to the good restaurants downtown and to the bridge that takes you to St. Armand's Circle and the Gulf. Don't miss the farmer's market on Saturday morning -sipping fresh coconut juice is a must! Owen's Fish Camp in the historic district is a hoot! If the wait is too long just go out back, sit at a picnic table, listen to music, sip their craft beer, and eat their grilled oysters. I wish I had discovered Sweet Mango when our son was a freshman! But the good news is - he's staying around Sarasota for a while so we can come back. We still have a lot to do on our Sarasota bucket list - the Marie Selby gardens, biking to Venice and kayaking the Bay. We're from the mid-Atlantic. With the possible exception of Sanibel Island, Sarasota is our favorite place in Florida and Sweet Mango is it!
We had a great time in Sarasota, which offers magnificent opportunities for theater and music events as well as walks and beaches, cafes and restaurants. We kept in the two star range or below, but we never had a bad meal in our four weeks--a big contrast with the Boston suburbs where we live.
We enjoyed Sweet Mango Manor. We loved the quirky, over-the-top decoration of the house, with its decades of fascinating collector items, especially old Florida mementoes. The garden with its hidden nooks, exotic ornaments, and luxuriant, well tended trees and plants, including a sweet pink grapefruit tree, was an unexpected plus. For us, the location of the house, just on the edge of the progressive Miamification of old Sarasota, was perfect as we loved the proximity of the Publix and the mile walk in to town for meals and theater and coffee. On the other hand our local friends who live in gated communities were a little aghast to find us so close to Martin Luther King Blvd and right next to a public park. We really liked that community feel but others might not.
One note. The web pictures of the house show a brilliant color décor with flamingo pink and lime green and turquoise. This color palette was almost a turn-off for our aging New Englanders' taste, and we were almost relieved to find that the house is in fact tree-shaded and dark. On the other hand, as a writer and researcher, I could have done with modern reading lamps in the main bedroom and in one of the rooms.
The owner of the house was attentive without effusiveness and the house was beautifully cleaned and well maintained.
This property was wonderful for anyone who appreciates a vintage Florida home decorated with every kind of Floridiana. As I was sitting in the garden enjoying my morning coffee (with Baileys) and eating my fresh grapefruit (off of the tree in the garden, picked with a grapefruit picker), and enjoying the whimsical artifacts, fountains, birds and gekkos, I decided that this place is magical. The interior was like an art installation with architectural details, lighting, old photos and brochures, and even View-Masters with reels of old Florida. Every corner was filled with clever discoveries: the fireplace mantle was made up of salvaged parts from an old piano whose legs had been damaged by a flood! The carpets were uniquely classic Chinese Deco. The owner is a real artist, and this whole house is one of her art works. Further, the entire house was clean, well maintained, stocked with kitchen stuff, a radio station set on classical music when we arrived (our favorite which came on each time we returned from an outing), and located only 7 blocks down the main drag to a great place for breakfast called the Toasted Mango (not related to Mango Manor), and only a few more blocks to the great restaurants and theaters and marinas and Selby Gardens in downtown Sarasota. Lido Beach and St. Armand's shopping and upscale restaurant circle is only a ten minute drive, and Siesta Beach is only about 20 minutes. Also, the Manor is only about 2 miles south of the Asolo Theater and Circus Museum. Finally, the owner, Kitty, was delightful, and very proud to show us how to enjoy her artistic home, and help us find the sites of Sarasota. I would recommend this gem to anyone seeking a truly unique lodging.
We went to Sarasota for a dragonboat race at Nathan Benderson Park, which is < 6 miles from Sweet Mango Manor. The house is in a great location-across from a park; a block from a grocery store; walking distance to the waterfront boardwalk; 15 minute walk downtown; restaurants nearby as well. It was a wonderful place to come "home" to after spending all day competing. Katherine has done a fabulous job renovating the house and the gardens are a wonderful place for a morning cup of coffee and just relaxing. I can't wait to come back....and bring friends. The house is well-designed for 2 couples to enjoy without being in each other's space!
We really enjoyed our stay at Sweet Mango during the 4th July week. The property is conveniently located to eateries, shops and grocery stores and it only takes 10 to 15 min to reach the beautiful Longboat Key public beach. Property is very pet friendly with enclosed back yard, Pioneer Park across the street and sidewalks throughout the historic neighborhood. My wife and I discovered Sarasota’s Bird Key Park on the causeway and really enjoyed taking advantage of the park benches overlooking Sarasota Bay and walking the dog on its scenic pathway each morning. We look forward to returning. Thank you Katherine ……!
