The General Grierson Beach Cottage at Omena is ideally located on the southern tip of a peninsula jutting into Grand Traverse Bay. It has been used as a gathering spot for several families as a way of reconnecting. The home can accommodate up to 12 people.
While its location on the beach provides endless opportunity for water fun, the cottage is nearby Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, one of the most popular spots on the west coast of Michigan. In addition, Leelanau county has many wineries to visit.
For Civil War history buffs, this home was built by General Benjamin Grierson. As related in Wikipedia; 'He is most noted for a daring 1863 expedition through Confederate held territory that severed enemy communication lines between Vicksburg, Mississippi and Confederate commanders in the Eastern Theatre'.
General Benjamin Grierson was a prominent figure in the Television Documentary, 'Buffalo Soldiers'. And John Wayne's character in the movie The Horse Soldiers; Colonel Marlowe, was loosely based on Grierson.

My father was a pilot in WW2 and when he came home he and my mother purchased this home. Our extended family has used this home as a summer vacation home every year since then. My brother is an architect and has been involved with maintaining the integrity of the home.
My father chose this home because of it's location. Being at the tip of the peninsula, it is almost completely surrounded by water. Plus, it was large enough for several of our families, living in different cities, to come together and reconnect.
We enjoy kayaking. We bring our kayaks and paddle all over Grand Traverse Bay. Plus, as we are avid wine drinkers, the many wineries located nearby pique our interest.
We had a wonderful time at the cottage. It is a beautiful traditional Michigan cottage with the right amount of kitchen and bathroom updates to keep my daughters-in-law happy. We enjoyed the historical connection with General Grierson, and recalled visiting his garrison at Fort Davis in West Texas years ago.
I found and read an interesting unpublished manuscript by Dr Rule presenting a few of his cases and his accumulated wisdom from fifty years of psychiatric practice. The grandchildren played a lot of badminton and volleyball. I spent most of my cabin time reading and looking towards the incredibly wide expanse of blue bay water. I did manage to get into the refreshingly cool water several times, since I don't consider myself on vacation until I've gotten completely immersed in a body of water.
We'd like to return next year, possibly later in the summer if a spot becomes available. If it doesn't, we would be open to returning in June.
Overall, it was a low key, slow paced vacation, away from the over stimulation of our too busy lives, a chance to move more slowly, think more deeply, and feel the loving connection of family. Thank you for preserving this refuge.
