This casita is lovely, newly remodeled, nicely furnished and conveniently located in a building by itself with complete privacy. We are giving the surroundings special care and love this spring!
People have told us they love it because it is cute, comfortable, convenient, oh so clean and QUIET (but yet only steps away from our La Mesa Village commercial area where there is great coffee, breakfast, happy hour, dinner - whatever your heart desires!) and easy access to all freeways, making getting anywhere in San Diego a breeze!
Oliver's Place was completely remodeled in 2010, with upgrades added each year since. It seems more spacious than the average studio because of the vaulted, open beam ceiling. Many say the pictures do not do the space justice. Unexpected are the lovely open, unobstructed views out the spacious windows in 3 directions - to the hills of Mexico, Mission Valley and then to the highest peak in San Diego - Cowles Mountain. A new deck was added in June 2011 as well as a laundry room. Both add to the enjoyment and convenience of guests. 2012 brought more creature comforts: a new Ortho mattress, GE AC that works wonderfully in the hottest of weather, and finally, a new 42'' flat screen TV.
We are conscientious about protecting the environment. We use clean solar electric power and provide opportunity to recycle. Our gardens are lush and water is managed with a drip system. There is a wonderful deck for sunset relaxation and a ZEN-like Garden with swing for reading or just relaxing.
Hummingbirds and wrens and mocking birds visit the yard. There are hawks in the open sky and you can hear the clatter of large flocks of green parrots that visit the Eucalyptus and Jacaranda trees year round.
There is safe and lighted off street parking.
Just steps from the front door of this studio is the heart of the Village of La Mesa, an historic location known as the 'Jewel of The Hills' (click on the link below for La Mesa history and information). There are excellent restaurants, coffee shops, antique and specialty shops. Evenings are often filled with the sound of music from the local venues. The Friday Farmers Market bustles with activity year round. There is sunshine (the coast can be foggy), sunsets, hilly vistas and ocean breezes.
But you may be coming to San Diego for the famous attractions - the beaches, Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Coronado Island, San Diego Bay and events at Qualcomm Stadium. All those places are 10 plus or minus miles away from La Mesa (check out the map) and the freeways that take you there are just a half mile away from the studio. The trolley is handy and provides easy access to downtown San Diego (see link for the Trolley service) and everything between! Visiting San Diego State University? The trolley is the best way to get there because it drops you right on campus!
Whether you are here to visit family or friends who live here or just to vacation on your own we hope you will make our vacation rental a part of your plans.
Long time La Mesa residents! Love to travel and love to use VRBO when we do travel. We are semi-retired - Geologist and Nurse Practitioner/Medical Anthroplogist.
Kathryn Boe purchased this studio in 1996
La Mesa is (almost) always sunny! We find we like that quality as opposed to the fog that can be ever present right on the coast. So, living inland is our choice.
A personal space, made more so with owner's travel momentos, rotating art from the main house, pottery, antiques handed down in the family.
There is hardly a thing that speaks more loudly for the value of our VRBO than to have our guests return, in many cases, again and again! Thank you all for your continued support and for your friendship. We have been enriched by your presence in our lives.
The Casita was perfect for our Christmas trip to San Diego. We arrived late, so Kathryn had the place ready for us, including having coffee for the morning. The off street parking was a real plus, we did not have to go hunting for a parking spot.
The place was very comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed for our short stay. San Diego had one of their winter storms during our visit, but the Casita was cozy, dry, and the heater worked very fast to keep it warm and toasty.
We would definitely recommend the Casita.
I stayed a few weeks at the Casita and absolutely everything is true in the reviews. It is a quiet neighborhood. Great kitchen, wi-fi, laundry, air conditioning, close by shopping, and restaurants within walking distance. I took the trolley which is only 3 blocks away to and from the airport. So, yes, you could stay here without having a car. I noticed after a few days that I slept really well in the bed, so I asked the owner what type of bed it was so I could get one for myself at home. They have lime and orange trees and you can eat the fruit if you are there at the right time. This is a wonderful little vacation place. You will not be disappointed if you book your stay here. I already have my next stay booked.
This was my first time ever using HomeAway, and I was so lucky to find Oliver's place to be my first rental. The property is in a quiet and safe neighborhood, and was fast and easy to get to all the San Diego attractions. The house had everything you could possibly think of needing while you're away from home. In fact, I felt right at home. I am a very difficult person to impress, and I was extremely happy and content with my choice. In addition, I used to live in San Diego so I know that this was a great area to stay in. The rental was spacious, clean, and accommodated all my needs! Kathryn and her husband were fantastic to deal with, and were very respectful and considerate of my privacy. They were right there when I had any questions, and made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. I highly recommend this rental to anyone (Even though I would like to keep this my best kept secret). I'm excited for my return and I will certainly be staying here again, and again, and again!
We have stayed at Oliver's Place for the past 2 years for our annual summer trip to San Diego. It's a great little studio perfect for a couple and one child. The location is close to all main freeways and gives easy access to everywhere you want to go. Having your own washer/dryer as well as a parking spot is really great and very hard to come by in a VRBO and makes regular beach-goers like us much more comfortable. The space is clean, comfortable and the owners are helpful and present when needed but give you your privacy. I hesitate to give this good review only because I would like to keep this place our little secret!
It was my first visit to Oliver Place and I was quite impressed and thoroughly enjoyed my stay.. It was clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. I especially liked that the place had a washer and dryer. It is also within walking distance of downtown LaMesa (a couple of blocks) where there are quite a few restaurants and other shops to browse through. I am most definitely planning to return next summer if the casita is available.
Oliver's Place is the best of all worlds for us: very close to family, walking distance to La Mesa Blvd. with several very good restaurants, walking distance to Sprouts Market, and located with 15-20 minutes of the Zoo, Balboa Park museums, and the coast. The sunsets from the deck are spectacular. The apartment has everything we could want for our winter stay and for shorter trips to see our grandchildren. The kitchen is fully equipped and spacious, the queen-size bed is very comfortable, and the apartment itself is bigger than the photos suggest. For a couple or even three people, this is a great place to spend time in the San Diego area. We highly recommend it!

Our landscape is hilly with twinkling night lights and great sun set views. You can see the lights of Tijuana to the south, some 30 miles away. Inland locations like La Mesa offer more sunshine during the cool months than do the coastal communities.
