About Kim & Dirk Racette

My wife Kim and I live in the Greater Grand Rapids area, she is a Kitchen Designer and a Writer, and I am a Financial Advisor. It has been a dream of ours to own a home on Lake Michigan, and having come up to Northport for several years we were thrilled to find the "blue" cottage on the Bay! We have three grown children, and the cottage is definitely a place for us to come and unplug. This area and its amazing combination of spectacular natural beauty, charming towns, wineries (23!), brewpubs, great seasonal events, state parks (including the Sleeping Bear Dunes area), and of course Traverse City offers so many things to do, more than we ever seem to be able to squeeze into our schedule!

Kim & Dirk Racette purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Kim & Dirk Racette chose Northern Michigan

We had come up to Northern Michigan so often over the past few years that we wanted to be a part of it. We started looking for a lake house in the Fall of 2015 and we came across this house in Northport, Michigan. The rest is history, and a dream come true. This cottage is unique because it is so close to the water, just outside the double sliders and across the sand. We can both see and hear the waves as they reach shore, and the turquoise water is just beautiful. We are looking forward to enjoying the home with our grown children, their spouses, and future grandchildren! We rent it now because we both work and don't get to get up there as often as we like.

What makes this cottage unique

Besides its spectacular location on the water, the home is surrounded by forests that have many hiking trails to explore. It is very peaceful and private. Begin your day by watching the sun rise from the deck, then either hit the trails or the beach. Explore the shore with the kayaks, canoe, or rowboat. Or maybe you would prefer visiting one of the 23 wineries located on the Peninsular, or one of the brewpubs, or farmers markets. There are also many seasonal events and musical performances you might fancy in some of the charming communities that dot the Peninsular, just minutes away. After a delicious dinner at one of the local restaurants a great way to end the day is with a bonfire on the beach, watching the moon rise. Wonderful!

Wonderful windy stay

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is perfect for a weekend getaway. The fire pit right on the water is the best combination of what northern Michigan has to offer.

Great Cottage location

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying in Newport! We visited several attractions within minutes of the cottage. The weather was absolutely picture perfect and the entire family enjoyed the stay. We combed the beach for all sorts of rocks and special finds. I would recommend the water shoes as well for the beach/rocks/shells. The cottage had everything we needed to enjoy our time up north. We made smores/Hot dogs over the camp fire on the property. Thanks again for a memorable stay! The owner is top notch with communications!

Rainy but cozy

  • 4 of 5

Despite of a cold and rainy weather, our stay was decent. Our 5 year old had the most fun. The description of the cottage is very accurate, you get what you see online! Be aware that the room with 2 twin beds and a quinsize bed in the basement has no installed air/heat, but portable heater was provided. Some linens were polyester/Walmart quality, but that's just personal preference issue. The owner was very accommodating and responsive. Complimentary Bottle of wine was a nice welcoming touch.

Lovely Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful stay on the water! We have been coming to the Traverse City area with our family of 8 for four years now and thoroughly enjoyed this property. Despite the cool weather, our kids (ages 2-10) enjoyed combing the beach for petoskey stones, shells, frogs and other little critters. Don't forget the water shoes. They are a must with the zebra mussel shells lining the shore. We came prepared though per the recommendations. The cottage was clean and well-stocked with everything that we needed. Even though the shore was rocky and not the best swimming area (we knew this), on the warmer days we visited the association beach which was just a short bike ride away. It was pristine and had plenty of sandy frontage. Empire Beach, Good Harbor Beach and Peterson Park (the place for sunsets!) were a short drive and a must to visit. We also couldn't do without heading into Northport for a cinnamon twist from Barb's Bakery. Delicious! If you are looking for a place for the kids to go during crummy weather and they are tired of the numerous board games available, Tucker's in town has an arcade and bowling as well as great food options. The neighbors were very friendly and a joy to talk with. The owner was just a phone call away even though we didn't need to contact her. Overall, fantastic cottage if you have small children and want to be on the water but not too far from others. Thank you so much for making our stay unforgettable!

Mi favorite Northern Spot is Mi Northern Addiction!!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have had the pleasure of renting Mi Northern Addiction in both the cold and warm weather seasons. Northport is a hidden treasure of natural beauty which offers a peaceful setting for the outdoor adventurer but also is convenient to excellent dining, unique waterfront shopping and quaint up north spots.

The hosts were very accomodating, the blue house is charming, comfortable, clean and equipped with all the necessary conveniences. The view of the lake is spectacular from the deck on the house and the beachfront campfires are what memoires are made of. I have young boys who like to swim if you are planning on swimming in the back be sure to bring your water shoes to protect your feet from the zebra mussels. If you prefer a sandy beach with tennis courts and play park you can walk to the private association beach down the street, or you can check out the three other association beach spots within 1 mile of the house. As a renter you are allowed access to all of these groomed areas. The residents are very welcolming to all. If you prefer the woods there is about 3 miles of walking/running trails within a few steps outside of your door.

Don't forget about the 17 local wineries up the M-22 Penninsula, the local downtown areas of Northport (have to go to Stubbs to eat), Leland & Fishtown, Suttons Bay (Roman Wheel Pizza), Sleeping Bear Dunes, Glen Arbor and of course Traverse City.

This property exceeded our expecations and will be our return to spot for years to come.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your response on the shells on our beach as I always try to make sure everyone who visits remembers to bring watershoes. There is a marvelous sand beach just off Densmore Rd. by the airport. It's a 0.2 mile easy hike to get to the beach, but this sugar sand, Lake Michigan beach is well worth it.
