MI Northern Spot: This is a peaceful and relaxing area of great natural beauty at the northern tip of Leelanau Peninsula on Grand Traverse Bay. Located at the mouth of Lake Michigan, the cottage faces east, with 60 feet of private frontage on a natural cove for a wonderful view of both the sun rise and the moon rise each day. Beautiful clear waters that reflect the coast on the opposite of the bay change color daily in a never ending display, and the forests that surround the cottage whisper and rustle with cooling breezes. It is truly a beautiful location.
This 3 bedroom 1 bath cottage has room for up to 8 in beds, but can sleep 10. There are two bedrooms upstairs including the master with a king sized bed and the second with twin bunk beds. There is also a deluxe inflatable queen bed stored in this room. The downstairs bedroom is a large room with a king sized bed (two twins together) and a full size bed. The living room features a full sized pullout sofa. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything for cooking and eating. There is a washer and dryer, and towels and bedding are provided. A large outdoor deck features 2 - 6 foot sliders, with outdoor seating for 8 at 2 tables. Early risers will enjoy a spectacular view of the sun as it rises over the east coast of the Bay, yet by noon the mature trees shade the deck as you relax under the cooling shade of the two umbrellas. The cottage has 60 ft of private frontage on Grand Traverse Bay / Lake Michigan, which guests can explore from our 2 kayaks, rowboat or canoe and/or enjoy nightly campfires on our beach. There are also beach toys stored in the deck box, and for those who enjoy rock hunting this is a great place to hunt for Petosky stones!
The cottage is located within the Cherry Homes Shores subdivision, and amenities include shared access with four waterfront parks on Grand Traverse Bay / Lake Michigan, forty acres of hiking trails, playground, basketball court, and tennis courts. There is also a large clubhouse that can be reserved for social or family events.
We are located only 2 miles south of the Leelanau State Park and the historic Grand Traverse Lighthouse. There are lighthouse tours, demonstrations, picnic and playgrounds, beaches and miles of hiking/skiing trails. Six miles south is the historic village of Northport, which has several great including Tuckers (which has a small arcade and bowling alley), Tom's Grocery Store, Barb's Bakery, and gift and clothing stores. The Mitten Brewing has just opened a new location in the village, with a great outdoor spot for a fresh glass of beer. The Northport Marina is a charming place to take a picnic lunch, enjoy the Friday night concert series in the summer or visit the play equipment with your kids. Northport Creek is a charming 9-hole golf course, small but nicely done. Sutton's Bay and Leland are both about 15 minutes from the cottage, and Traverse City is about 45 minutes south. There are 23 wineries on the Peninisula (plus several hard cider shops and breweries) and Leelanau Sands Casino is just a short drive away.

My wife Kim and I live in the Greater Grand Rapids area, she is a Kitchen Designer and a Writer, and I am a Financial Advisor. It has been a dream of ours to own a home on Lake Michigan, and having come up to Northport for several years we were thrilled to find the "blue cottage" on the Bay! We have three grown children, and the cottage is definitely a place for us to come and unplug. This area and its amazing combination of spectacular natural beauty, charming towns, wineries (23!), brewpubs, great seasonal events, state parks (including the Sleeping Bear Dunes area), and of course Traverse City offers so many things to do, more than we ever seem to be able to squeeze into our schedule!
Kim & Dirk Racette purchased this cottage in 2016
We had come up to Northern Michigan so often over the past few years that we wanted to be a part of it. We started looking for a lake house in the Fall of 2015 and we came across this house in Northport, Michigan. The rest is history, and a dream come true. This cottage is unique because it is so close to the water, just outside the double sliders and across the sand. We can both see and hear the waves as they reach shore, and the turquoise water is just beautiful. We are looking forward to enjoying the home with our grown children, their spouses, and future grandchildren! We rent it now because we both work and don't get to get up there as often as we like.
Besides its spectacular location on the water, the home is surrounded by forests that have many hiking trails to explore. It is very peaceful and private. Begin your day by watching the sun rise from the deck, then either hit the trails or the beach. Explore the shore with the kayaks, canoe, or rowboat. We are members of the Cherry Homes Association, so our guests can also use the tennis courts, shuffle board court, or the basketball court area. In Northport there are several tasty restaurants, a great bakery, Tuckers with it's charming bowling alley and game room, Pennington' s Gift Shop, and the Mitten Brewery. During the summer season there are terrific concerts at the Marina each Friday evening. If you enjoy fine wines, (and who doesn't?) there are 23 wineries located on the Peninsular. We have tasting glasses in the cottage, so make sure to grab those on the way out and save on tasting fees. Our favorites include L. Mawby Winery, Blue Stone, and 45 Parallel. At 45 they have bocce sets to play a game out near the vines-super fun! If you like hard cider don't miss the view at Sutton's Bay Cider, and be sure to play some horse shoes at Tandem Ciders. There are also many seasonal events and musical performances you might fancy in some of the charming communities that dot the Peninsula, including Leland and Sutton's Bay, just minutes away. After a delicious dinner at one of the local restaurants a great way to end the day is to return to the relaxing and private beach at the cottage. If you enjoy rock hunting, our beach has some of the best rocks we've seen throughout the area, and of course we are across the bay from Petosky. Finding a beautiful Petosky stone is like a treasure hunt, and is one of nature's great works of art. Set up the beach chairs around the fire ring, and light a bonfire on the beach, so you can watch the moon rise. Open that new bottle of wine you purchased, and toast the season. Wonderful!
We had an amazing weekend. House was very clean. Beach was beautiful, although rocky and a ton of shells, but we expected that. Tons of dishes, utensils, linens, and charcoal and gas grills. Kids loved the kayaks and bikes. Nearby trails and tennis courts. Would recommend this for a relaxing destination weekend!!!
We are morning people and so this wonderful home on the eastern side of Leelanau was perfect. We enjoyed wonderful Sunrises in a most peaceful setting. Most evenings we enjoyed the rising Moon and its dancing upon the waters. If you are looking for a quiet setting right on the water, you will enjoy this place. Well groomed and maintained with nice recreational accommodations. Because the surf often lands on the shore there is usually a great sound. Recommend that beach shoes be worn due to natural terrain of shells and rocks. We had a great week and were very satisfied with our choice.
My family had a wonderful time at the blue cottage. The view from the deck is absolutely perfect, to the extent that all our planned activities went out the window and we mostly sat on the deck reading, playing cards, and chatting while the kids played in the sand. As mentioned by others, the beach proper has a lot of shells and is rocky, but that didn't stop the kids from swimming as much as possible. The water is nice and shallow. The cottage itself is cozy and fit our large family just fine. There was space inside for a play area for our toddler if we moved the couch around a bit, and the bunk bed room was great for the older kids (plenty of board games included). If you plan to do a lot of cooking, I recommend bringing some of your own kitchen knives and a large cutting board. Another big perk for us was the great tennis court, basketball hoop and playground down the road. It's a great spot and the tennis court is very well-kept. My dad was thrilled that there were pickleball lines included on the court. All in all, a great location, caring owners, and a fun place to visit with kids!
We greatly enjoyed our stay at this cottage in Northport. There were many ting to do in the area and we were never bored. The cottage is right on Grand Traverse Bay. The cottage came well stocked with firewood, tennis rackets, tennis balls, bikes, a canoe, two kayaks and a rowboat. Thank you for your kind hospitality.
The cottage is perfect for a weekend getaway. The fire pit right on the water is the best combination of what northern Michigan has to offer.
We had a great time staying in Newport! We visited several attractions within minutes of the cottage. The weather was absolutely picture perfect and the entire family enjoyed the stay. We combed the beach for all sorts of rocks and special finds. I would recommend the water shoes as well for the beach/rocks/shells. The cottage had everything we needed to enjoy our time up north. We made smores/Hot dogs over the camp fire on the property. Thanks again for a memorable stay! The owner is top notch with communications!
2 kayaks, rowboat, and a canoe, are available for use. We are members of the Cherry Homes Shore Association, so our guests can use the tennis courts, basketball area, and shuffle board. There are tennis rackets and balls. There are 5 well marked trails in the forest behind the cottage.
