Overview

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Bath, (Sleeps 8)

MI Northern Spot: This is a peaceful and relaxing area of great natural beauty at the northern tip of Leelanau Peninsula on Grand Traverse Bay. Located at the mouth of Lake Michigan, the cottage faces east, with 60 feet of private frontage on a natural cove for a wonderful view of both the sun rise and the moon rise each day. Beautiful clear waters that reflect the coast on the opposite of the bay change color daily in a never ending display, and the forests that surround the cottage whisper and rustle with cooling breezes. It is truly a beautiful location.

This 3 bedroom 2 bath cottage has room for up to 8 in beds. There are two bedrooms upstairs including the master with a king sized bed and the second with twin bunk beds. There is also a deluxe inflatable queen bed stored in this room. The downstairs bedroom is a large room with a king sized bed (two twins together) and a full size bed. The living room features a full sized pullout sofa. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything for cooking and eating. There is a washer and dryer, and towels and bedding are provided. A large outdoor deck features 2 - 6 foot sliders, with outdoor seating for 8 at 2 tables. Early risers will enjoy a spectacular view of the sun as it rises over the east coast of the Bay, yet by noon the mature trees shade the deck as you relax under the cooling shade of the two umbrellas. The cottage has 60 ft of private frontage on Grand Traverse Bay / Lake Michigan, which guests can explore from our 2 kayaks, rowboat or canoe and/or enjoy nightly campfires on our beach. There are also beach toys stored in the deck box, and for those who enjoy rock hunting this is a great place to hunt for Petoskey stones!

The cottage is located within the Cherry Homes Shores subdivision. We are located only 2 miles south of the Leelanau State Park and the historic Grand Traverse Lighthouse. There are lighthouse tours, demonstrations, picnic and playgrounds, beaches and miles of hiking/skiing trails. Six miles south is the historic village of Northport, which has several great restaurants including Tuckers (which has a small arcade and bowling alley), Fischers Happy Hour Tavern, The Garage, Tom's Grocery Store, Barb's Bakery, and gift and clothing stores. The Mitten Brewing has just opened a new location in the village, with a great outdoor spot for a fresh glass of beer. The Northport Marina is a charming place to take a picnic lunch, enjoy the Friday night concert series in the summer or visit the play equipment with your kids. Northport Creek is a charming 9-hole golf course, small but nicely done. Sutton's Bay and Leland are both about 15 minutes from the cottage, and Traverse City is about 45 minutes south. There are 23 wineries on the Peninisula (plus several hard cider shops and breweries) and Leelanau Sands Casino is just a short drive away.

About Kim & Dirk Racette

My wife Kim and I live in the Greater Grand Rapids area, she is a Kitchen Designer and a Writer, and I am a Financial Advisor. It has been a dream of ours to own a home on Lake Michigan, and having come up to Northport for several years we were thrilled to find the "blue cottage" on the Bay! We have three grown children, and the cottage is definitely a place for us to come and unplug. This area and its amazing combination of spectacular natural beauty, charming towns, wineries (23!), brewpubs, great seasonal events, state parks (including the Sleeping Bear Dunes area), and of course Traverse City offers so many things to do, more than we ever seem to be able to squeeze into our schedule!

Kim & Dirk Racette purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Kim & Dirk Racette chose Northport

We had come up to Northern Michigan so often over the past few years that we wanted to be a part of it. We started looking for a lake house in the Fall of 2015 and we came across this house in Northport, Michigan. The rest is history, and a dream come true. This cottage is unique because it is so close to the water, just outside the double sliders and across the sand. We can both see and hear the waves as they reach shore, and the turquoise water is just beautiful. We are looking forward to enjoying the home with our grown children, their spouses, and future grandchildren! We rent it now because we both work and don't get to get up there as often as we like.

What makes this cottage unique

Besides its spectacular location on the water, the home is surrounded by forests that have many hiking trails to explore. It is very peaceful and private. Begin your day by watching the sun rise from the deck, then either hit the trails or the beach. Explore the shore with the kayaks, canoe, or rowboat. In Northport there are several tasty restaurants, a great bakery, Tuckers with it's HIGH ENERGY bowling alley and game room, Pennington' s Gift Shop, and the Mitten Brewery. During the summer season there are terrific concerts at the Marina each Friday evening. If you enjoy fine wines, (and who doesn't?) there are 23 wineries located on the Peninsular. We have tasting glasses in the cottage, so make sure to grab those on the way out and save on tasting fees. Our favorites include L. Mawby Winery, Blue Stone, and 45 Parallel. At 45 they have bocce sets to play a game out near the vines-super fun! If you like hard cider don't miss the view at Sutton's Bay Cider, and be sure to play some horse shoes at Tandem Ciders. There are also many seasonal events and musical performances you might fancy in some of the charming communities that dot the Peninsula, including Leland and Sutton's Bay, just minutes away. After a delicious dinner at one of the local restaurants a great way to end the day is to return to the relaxing and private beach at the cottage. If you enjoy rock hunting, our beach has some of the best rocks we've seen throughout the area, and of course we are across the bay from Petoskey. Finding a beautiful Petoskey stone is like a treasure hunt, and is one of nature's great works of art. Set up the beach chairs around the fire ring, and light a bonfire on the beach, so you can watch the moon rise. Open that new bottle of wine you purchased, and toast the season. Wonderful!

Great place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

Everything was exactly as advertised. Everything was comfortable (especially the beds) and clean. The owners are very accommodating and responsive. We had to call for help with the TV and he worked with us for almost 10 minutes trying to fix it. He finally said he would have their maintenance man come over ASAP. Turned out we didn't need him once we realized it was user error. It was a small thing, but it was assuring to know they were so readily available.

The kayaks and canoe (and life vests) they provide helped make the trip especially fun.

There are several neat towns nearby, and a lot of hiking trails. The best we found were near Traverse City. It's a 45 minute drive but there's a lot of variety of trails. Try Sleeping Bear Dunes if you're in shape and it's not too hot. We also found a variety of good restaurants in each town.

This was a great place for us to meet up with old friends. I'd recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a laid-back, relaxing vacation.

Perfect. Owners have put a lot of effort into making it easy to have a great time.

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean and everything was in perfect working order. The beds were very comfortable, which we especially appreciated. The kayaks and canoe were a big plus. We had pushed some wrong buttons on the TV remote and had to call for help. The owners were extremely patient and were prepared to send someone over to fix it. It turned out not to be necessary but it was good to know they are so responsive.

The view is great and the nearby towns are a lot of fun. Lots of hiking trails up and down the peninsula. If you're bold, and in shape, try Sleeping Bear Dunes.

All in all it was the ideal house for a getaway with friends...Rick Joy

Ok, but really should be professionally cleaned

  • 2 of 5

This is a modest (but perfectly ok) house in a nice location with a pretty beach. Kayaks on site are a nice addition. But, it needs to be a LOT cleaner. When we arrived it was really quite dirty - old food stuck to the grill, old moldy coffee grinds still in the coffee maker, lipstick marks on the wine glasses, dirty dishwasher, dusty plates, etc. My theory is that they rely on guests to clean up after themselves and don't have a professional service come in before the next ones arrive. We have rented a lot of VRBO properties and I have never had this happen before.

Also, the kitchen could really use some upgrades - it has only the most basic equipment and a lot of that is very worn out, burn and scratch marks, etc.

Generally needs better upkeep.

Owner's Response: We do appreciate your feedback. We consistently receive positive reviews, so these comments have caught us by surprise. There are a couple of things I'd like to address. The cottage is professionally cleaned by 2 ladies, and we have had great comments about their work. They spend several hours cleaning, doing the laundry, and getting it ready for the next guests. The grill is one year old, and although we don't ask them to clean that it has hardly been used. Yes, the kitchen and dishwasher are original (we are remodeling the kitchen this fall) but it is clean and neat and fully loaded with many accessories new this year. One thing not mentioned in the review that is surprising is that we added a bathroom and upgraded the original one with tiled showers, new vanities, new everything. That was not included in the listing information (or the weekly rate) when it was booked prior to the season, and most of our guests have been appreciative of those unexpected upgrades. We do take our responsibilities as hosts very seriously, and do thank you again for letting us know of your concerns.

Relaxing, quiet vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at the blue cottage! I loved that the house was only a few steps from the water. The deck with comfortable chairs was a relaxing place to enjoy the beautiful view. The water changed daily. When it was rough, the sound of the waves could be heard all night...so relaxing! On calm nights we enjoyed campfires in the firepit right by the water's edge and we got to see the beautiful full moon rise over the water. The kayaks were so much fun! It was awesome to glide over the smooth as glass water and see the big boulders below. The bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable. Although there are other houses in the area, it was very quiet. We took daily walks along the road and found it very pleasant with little traffic. I also recommend hiking on the nearby trails. I highly recommend the blue cottage!

Great Family Place at Tip of Leelanau Penisula

  • 5 of 5

Overall a great place. The neighborhood is wonderful and the property had everything amenity we could have asked for and more. Great beach area with perfect calm water as long as the wind is not from the East.

Small concern was the request to clean (bathrooms, kitchen) and strip beds before we left. We are very clean and tidy wherever we stay but that threw us off a little bit having to pack up while worrying about cleaning too...

Wonderful, relaxing, quiet, great equipment available, very nice neighborhood, beautiful view,

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to come back! Our family including five children where amazed by the view on the lake, privacy, equipment available at the house (from kitchen equipment, games,...to canoes, etc). A very enjoyable beach just in front of the house...The small kids have been playing there safely all day while the adults enjoyed the sun. The fire place directly on the beach was also extremely agreeable all evenings!

The trails near the house and neighborhood are extremely pleasant and Leilanau State Park is a fantastic place offering beautiful beaches and more trails.
