Yes.. the green dot is Casa Maria and it's only 15 min north of Mahahual!
Casa Maria was designed by its owners and has a very open floor plan and huge bedrooms. The bedrooms have been designed so that by opening both the east and west balcony doors you can experience the natural Caribbean breeze. The best part of the villa is being right on the water. The large decks complete with ocean and beach views are awesome, you can just sit in the hammock and enjoy! The roof top deck comes complete with built in couch and table to enjoy the sunsets and star filled nights. Located a short 15 min. north of Mahahual, the Seclusion is nice and the other villas are far enough apart that you don’t even notice they are there. Casa Maria’s area is safe and with our caretaker, who lives in his own casita out front, you have security 24/7.
We enjoy visiting Mahahual when the cruise ships are in or out of port. But after enjoying the day in town it’s nice to return to the quiet serenity of your own private villa and beach. Take time during your stay to make a camp fire on the beach and enjoy the stars. We know you will enjoy Casa Maria!
Please tell your friends.
Dana & Suzanne purchased this villa in 2010
We enjoy visiting the area so much we decided to build. Casa Maria has taken 2 years to build and the results are remarkable. Over 4000 sq ft of living. 'ENJOY'
Thank you for choosing to stay at Casa Maria. Casa Maria is a Secluded Beach Front Luxury Villa located just north of the small town of Mahahual on the Costa Maya in Mexico. Located on the beautiful Caribbean Sea and only 3 to 4 hours from the States, Mahahual has it's own private airport for for those who would like to remain unnoticed while visiting the Costa Maya. Its perfect for that weekend get-a-way or spend the month and enjoy the secluded beaches. This area has very few villas for rent, so privacy is guaranteed. We now offer our villa for rent or lease to individuals who want to experience this Private Piece of Paradise. We want your stay at Casa Maria to be a memorable one. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
I guess the best review for your home is that we’ll be returning this winter for another six weeks.
We loved both your home and the surrounding area.
The grand-kids (3 & 6) learned how to boogie board in the front yard.
They had a wonderful time hunting for crabs every evening in the dark, this time we’re bring nerf guns with glow in the dark bullets for more adventures.
The fresh fruits, veggie’s, and warm fresh tortillas delivered to the door several times a week (for next to nothing) was great! I’m missing the mangos.
We saw 1-3 people max walking along our stretch of the beach each day, so sunbathing was very private.
Almost hit an ocelot on the beach road one night, beautiful!
We saw the ruins at Chacchobean and Kohunlich (a must see), take a water bottle as you’re exploring without the crowds!
Go north up the beach to the point for snorkeling, or drive as there’s a little road down to the beach there.
Best snorkeling areas anywhere I’ve been (and I lived in Hawaii for two years); giant star fish, rays, and gorgeous coral formations.
If you have time, sign up with “Otto” at Costa-Maya-Tours in downtown Mahahual for a trip out to Banco Chinchorro for snorkeling & to see the crocs.
We also spent a day spear fishing with “Mike”, Mayan Beach Gardens set this up for us, and got all the fish we could grill & eat for our trip.
We enjoyed going into Mahahual both when a cruise ship was in port and all the shops were open, and when the ships weren’t in and it was mostly the locals and their families.
Mahahual’s beach is very safe, shallow with no waves, so the kids loved playing there and gathering up handfuls of itty bitty hermit crabs.
The people in town are very friendly and by the end of our trip we felt like we knew everyone.
There are at least four (that we found) grocery stores in town and each sells different items, we drove up into Chetumal and stocked up but most could be found locally.
Luckily our third child is going to be able to make it this year, so we have an excuse to go back to all of our favorite places.
We’re adding a drive down into Belize river tubing, and a deep sea fishing excursion this trip.
It was SO hard to say good-bye to Carlos when we left, he was wonderful, and we can’t wait to see him again in a couple of weeks.
To preface this review I think it's important that the reader understand that we were in Mahahual at Casa Maria for 30 days during the worst seaweed (sargasso) invasion in at least 40 years. We were able to find ways to entertain ourselves and have a great time but I would not recommend anywhere in the Caribbean while the seaweed invasion is happening.
First off the house:
Casa Maria is absolutely stunning. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds exceptionally comfortable. 2 of the bathrooms are also quite large and very well equipped. My mother in law was raving about the decor her entire stay. It was very nice having purified water and ice from the fridge. The screen room was so nice for eating and playing games! Also the internet was very fast and Netflix worked which was unexpected!
We worked primarily with Suzanne who was wonderful. She provided us with pictures of the beach and lots of useful information. Upon our arrival and finding massive amounts of seaweed on the beach she was very helpful in providing us with options and putting us in contact with people for activities outside of the water.
Cladio is a great asset to Casa Maria. He speaks good english and was consistently checking with us. What we learned with Cladio is you need to ask him or it probably won't get done. Just ask! Cladio also kept us stocked with fresh coconuts which we kept in the fridge and were delicious!
Casa Maria is quite remote. It took us 4:30 minutes to drive from the airport in Cancun to Casa Maria stopping only for gas. From Casa Maria to the town of Mahahual is apprx 25 minutes depending on the condition of the beach road. The stars from the rooftop deck were unbelievable. And most importantly Casa Maria is relatively affordable.
This is a tough one for us. We rarely went outside during our time at Casa Maria. We found that the beaches in the town of Mahahual were having the seaweed removed with heavy machinery and were much cleaner. Claudio tried to rake the seaweed a few times but it always came back. The landscaping around Casa Maria is beautiful. The sand is the softest and whitest of any beach I have found in Mexico. We snorkeled several times from "The Point" which is a short drive up the road. We saw turtles on the beach! Sadly there is a lot of garbage on the beach in both directions from Casa Maria.
Overall I really want to come back when conditions have improved.
We just had the pleasure of staying for one week in the beautiful beachfront villa, Casa Maria, north of Mahahual. The owners, Dana and Suzanne, were always available via email for question, suggestions, and helpful tips for the area. The house itself is stunning with a very isolated, private beachfront location. My sister joined us and loved having her own upstairs bedroom with a beautiful ocean view. The home is spacious and has plenty of everything you need. Just bring all your groceries, and some condiments, with you. Claudio, the caretaker was always available for any help we needed. We went on many adventures while there: Chacchoben ruins, Bacalar Lagoon, and a great, isolated snorkeling beach one north of the house on the beach road. Mahahual is a very small fishing village that is now a cruise ship port but there were no ships in port during our stay which was perfect. We ate at NochKay at the south end of the Malecon and had the best fresh fish dinner I have ever had. Three entrees and 2 drinks each and the bill was less than $50 US. We also enjoyed a couple days on the beach at Tropicante where we got snacks and drinks served to us all day. Mahahual is great for scuba diving but it was too windy during our stay to go diving. We had dinner at Mayan Beach Garden hotel just 3 minutes north of the home. The owner, Marcia, was also helpful with ideas for snorkeling spots. One draw back, which some may consider a plus, is that the house is at least 30 minutes from Mahahual so going into town for meals took a bit longer than we had anticipated. The AC can only be run at night and the generator is so loud I hated running it for fear of disturbing Claudio. But for the beauty, views, serenity, and comfort of the home, Casa Maria can't be beat! Thank you Dana and Suzanne!
We all (two couples) enjoyed our stay at Casa Maria very much, with the exception of the sea weed that is plaguing the entire Costa Maya and even in the Gulf. The house is very nicely furnished with all that you will need. If you cook alot the kitchen is well furnished but little in the way of seasonings and condiments so buy what you need in that regard. The charcoal BBQ was kind of difficult to get going but with practice should work fine. If you drive up and down the coastline you can find places to snorkel where the sea weed is not so concentrated. I understand that this is a very unusual year for the abundance of sea weed. We dined at Mayan Gardens and it was okay... kind of stifling as the dining area is set back behind the accommodations which block the sea breeze. Our favorite place to dine in Mahahual was at the very south end of the Malecon at a place called noch-kay (or something similar) which was a very casual place and their shrimp dishes are delicious... we tried them all, and the prices were very reasonable. I was surprised that even when the cruise ships were in, that town was still enjoyable and not overly crowded. The malecon definitely rolls up early, around sixish, so get there early to dine. Claudio lined us up with a fishing trip out of Mahahual that was really fun and fruitful... the fellas each caught 50 lb groupers impressing even the locals. It worked out to about $55 an hour for all four of us with only two fishing at a time. Erik also caught a nice barracuda which apparently are abundant in the area. Sting rays are also abundant in the area so watch when walking in the shallows... I saw several during our stay when snorkeling, one extremely large one. We went to see two of the ruins which were both really nice and the drive inland was beautiful. I think it was Kohunilich and Dzbaniche (or something like that). Claudio was very kind and helpful when needed and he also speaks very good english. All in all, another wonderful trip to the Costa Maya :) Thank you for sharing!!
Casa Maria was off the grid but perfect for our family of seven, kids ages 10-16. We made the mistake of taking the first Casa Maria sign off the paved road which was the way too long bumpy road way. Make sure not to turn right until you hit kilometer 22 and see the signs for Casa Maria. Once we arrived it truly is paradise. The house is amazing and very well laid out with a balcony off each room. Our 16 year old very much enjoyed the hammock off the upper bedroom and claimed it as his bedroom for the entire week! The master bedroom was as big as my entire home back in Canada and the beds in every room are very comfortable. The kitchen had everything you need to make your meals and it was nice to have purified water and ice. Claudio was available 24/7 and took care of our every need. The house came equipped with basic soap for dishes, paper towels, and the bathroom had soap and toilet paper. The kids had a great time boogie boarding and the house came equipped with all sorts of toys for them. Overall the house and the views are amazing!
The house only had two cons: the pictures showed a BBQ and there was none so just email Suzanne to ask if they've replaced it yet. The other was when the wind changed about half way through our week, a lot of weeds also called sargaso washed up on the beach. In reality this sargaso was everywhere. We stayed in Akumal the week after and they had the same issues. Claudio did his best to clean the beach each day but it may annoy those who expect no weeds. You need to remember you are in a very remote area so the weeds and the garbage that no one is around to clean up equals no people...we didn't see anyone the entire time on our beach. Priceless! Mahahual is a friendly, little village and we enjoyed a few days on the beach there. The cheapest places to eat were not on the Malecon. Turn left before the lighthouse into new Mahahual and eat at Pizza Papis, which had delicious wood fired pizza and Padrinos across the street from it. Padrinos cost us less then $40 for seven of us and we had the best Mexican and huge burgars.
Also, go to Mayan Beach Garden two minutes down the road from Casa Maria. It saves you the drive into town for dinner and their food was amazing. Marsha answered all of our questions and allowed us to park at her place so we could walk onto her beach to the best snorkelling in the area.
Overall a great family vacation and we can't wait to return! Thanks Suzanne!
4 adults plus 4 teenagers stayed 10 nights there and we're missing it so much.
The house is spacious, comfortable, with excellent taste and architecture, designed to relax and enjoy.
Everything works fine and the setting is gorgeous.
Kayacs are great. Great also is the sea for snorkeling, lots of animals!
The housekeeper is a great host and will improve your stay in many ways.
Can't wait to go back!
We were compleltely amazed at this place. Spacious, comfortable home with all the amenities and beautiful vistas. We found the roof top patio especially enjoyable for star gazing at night. Carlos, who is the caretaker and speaks english, spanish and french is a warm and accomodating gentleman and was always available and very helpful. His knowledge of the area is extensive, since he grew up there, and was quite helpful in guiding us to the various dive operations and local restaurants. Highly reccomend this home not only for the comfort, but for a bunch of Gringos who do not speak spanish Carlos was irreplaceable. FYI - air conditioning is limited by policy to night time only.
Casa Maria is located 15 min drive to Mahahual (Bars, Restaurants, Fun) Casa Maria is located on the nicest beach in Mahahual.
