Enjoy your stay at the Chartres Street Cottage, an exquisitely handcrafted and restored shotgun style Victorian cottage built in 1892. Privately located behind a locked gate, the Chartres Street Cottage is the guest house of an historic 1868 Italianate Creole residence. Conveniently located only 12 blocks from the French Quarter, this exclusive 1250 square foot cottage is in the historic Bywater. As the third oldest section of New Orleans, enjoy old southern elegance and charm at its best. Exclusive and private, the Chartres Street Cottage is exquisitely fully furnished with handmade, exotic hardwoods.
The Charm of the Chartres Street Cottage: In 'the city that care forgot', enjoy off street parking and your own private courtyard entrance. Indulge in the southern tradition of 'porch sitting' in your own private beautifully landscaped courtyard. The French Quarter is only 12 blocks away where you can enjoy beignets, Jackson Square, Preservation Alley and all that the French Quarter has to offer. Also conveniently located to the Jazz Fest Fairgrounds. The Chartres Street Cottage is privately owned and has been personally restored with historic preservation in mind. While enjoying your stay, you may notice the original crown molding throughout the home, magnificent pocket doors, classic pier and beam construction, antique roses in the garden from ancestors of our neighbors who brought clippings with them from overseas in the 1800's, and much more.
Amenities: The Chartres Street Cottage has 9 feet ceilings, central air conditioning and heat, ceiling fans throughout and on the porch, hard wood floors and carpeting, linens, a full kitchen, an enclosed sunroom, and a tin roof porch overlooking a private courtyard with a pavilion. We just recently installed new carpeting, flooring, washer/dryer, and new living room furniture. The cottage is located around the corner from Markey's Bar, a favorite neighborhood watering hole. Be sure to ask for Roy Markey! Other local favorites in the neighborhood include Elizabeth's Restaurant, the Cake Cafe, the Country Club and Feeling's Cafe.
Katherine grew up in New Orleans and Michael grew up in upstate New York. We have a 12 year old son. Michael moved to New Orleans in the early 1990's and bought old homes in the Bywater. We personally renovated (along with great help from family and friends) five homes with painstaking detail and attention to preserving the historical significance of each property. We met at Tulane Business School and now live in Austin Texas where we started a new concept store 13 years ago, Zinger Hardware & General Merchant. It is with great joy that we offer the Chartres Street Cottage to visitors from all over the world so that you can personally experience the history of New Orleans.
Katherine . purchased this house in 1993
You folks have got a wonderful hideaway there in the midst of the New Orleans scene. Your shotgun cottage is phenomenal. I'm looking forward to coming back without festivities to just chill out and commune with the porch frogs. Please reserve the Chartres Street Cottage for 2011 New Orleans Jazz Fest.
We enjoyed our stay at the cottage and loved that it was cross from Crescent Park, and walking distance to many restaurants. Nice side yard with privacy.
My husband, another couple, and I stayed for 3 nights in this lovely house. They neighbor who greeted us was knowledgeable about the area and gave us valuable info. It is a neat, quirky, hipster neighborhood. We were a little more than a mile from the quarter which is about a 10$ cab ride or 20 min walk. There was also restaurants and bars less than 2 blocks away. My suggestion is that if you can bring bikes, you should.... I would have totally loved to had more ability to explore. If you are considering this place, do it... its great!
my wife and I as well as one other couple stayed here over Memorial Day Weekend. Overall the place was as advertised or better. The patio/porch were nicer than we expected. The place was plenty spacious for 4 people. Bathroom is a little on small end, but not overly so. Location is solid, maybe a 10 minute walk to Frenchmen street. Inside, the bed was very comfortable and plenty of space in each bedroom, especially the master which has an additional sitting room. Main room is somewhat dated but comfortable; plus we didn't spend much time sitting around watching TV since we were in NOLA to have fun and do some site seeing! Jim was available with any issues and was super helpful. Would definitely stay here again.
Had an amazing time, we felt we were part of the neighborhood. Great location very easy access to everything. Jim was a great resource and made us feel welcome.
The house was very clean and comfortable. I stayed there with my husband and two of our friends. There was MORE than enough space for all of us. The beds were so comfortable, it was a peaceful location. I didn't notice any noise at all. The courtyard was great, we made sure to have dinner outside one of the days and it was just perfect. Jim, the property manager, was so incredibly helpful and kind. Katherine was great too. If I make my way back to NOLA, I would love to stay here again. We all agreed it was our little slice of paradise during our stay. Thank you Jim & Katherine!!
We shared the cottage with another couple (old friends from college) and had a terrific stay. Your first impression from the street won't be great but open the gates and it gets better quickly. Very well furnished and well equipped....very comfortable beds and a nice combo of privacy and common space including the porch and courtyard. We feared the one bathroom would be troublesome but we did fine.
The walk to and from the quarter is a good antidote to the typical NOLA high calorie dinner. We took cabs after dark...approx $13 fare.
All in all, great value and will definitely book it again.
