Overview

About the property

Cabin, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-12)

This quaint, country home and cabin is located at the foot of a mountain overlooking the famous Shenandoah River known for its fishing and beauty. It is a rustic place with the basic for comforts, it is not a 5 star hotel that has everything perfect and super modern but more of a rustic, old grandma's home style. So please be aware of that fact so you don't get disappointed when you arrive and see that is not like a luxury resort.

CABIN AND MAIN FEATURES

The home has a large deck from which you witness the spectacular view by day of the Shenandoah River and Shenandoah Valley, which is surrounded by mountains full of forests. On the same deck by night you witness the starry night seeing the sky full of stars and planets! Also you can appreciate of all of these marvelous views while enjoy being in a nice hot tub. The home is locally known as “1 Little Vineyard by the River”, since it has a small and developing vineyard and as a result you will see this theme reflected inside the home through its decor. The kitchen, comes with most of what you need to cook or simply to serve prepared food you bring from area eateries. The living room has a convenient gas fireplace, nice flat screen TV and surround sound system where you and your kids can comfortably enjoy different shows or movies or simply play some nice music while you cook or enjoy conversations with your family and friends.

ACTIVITIES AND CONVENIENCES

Guests come to either rest or to enjoy the many activities the area offers, which include fishing, hunting, biking, hiking, mountain climbing, swimming or kayaking or canoeing. Those into the civil war will find many important historical sites or battle locations very close by. Guests have access to a private entrance to the Shenandoah River, which is just across from the home. The home is easily accessible from Washington DC or from Northern Virginia. Flights from anywhere in the country are usually reasonable so travel cost should not deter you. Those coming from outside the area will find it easy to travel to the area, since you have three major airports serving the area: Dulles International Airport, Washington Reagan Airport or Baltimore International Airport.

Come and enjoy the peaceful environment here at the home and at the same time have easy access to such notable places as the Smithsonian Museums, Capital, and the White House. Alternatively, you can simply drive down the famous and breathtaking Skyline Drive operated by the U.S. National Park Service, which is minutes from the home. The town of Luray is also an easy 15 minute drive from the home and there you will have access to shopping, restaurants and to the renowned Luray Caverns.

LAYOUT OF CABIN

The cabin sleeps up to 12 persons. For those wanting to know how private the bedrooms are, here is a description of cabin’s layout.

Keep in mind that the cabin is an A-frame cabin with a loft. The cabin has four bedrooms; two bedrooms have total privacy with doors, one that is the loft and offers some privacy and a smaller bedroom with no doors and therefore with little privacy. Here is a further description.

On the main floor is the master bedroom with a door that closes making the bedroom private. It has a queen size bed. You will find the master bathroom right in front of the master bedroom at the end of the hallway.

Also, on the main floor is a smaller bedroom that is between the A-frame portion of the home and the living room and kitchen area. It has three twin size beds, which are ideal for children, teens or single adults. This bedroom does not have a door.

The bedroom in the loft does not have doors, but yet the area is relatively private, since you have to be on the top floor to have clear view of the main bedroom. The loft has a full-size bed and a queen size futon.

The basement is finished and it has a private bedroom with a queen size bed and it has a door that closes with a living area right outside with a couch that converts into a full-size bed. The basement is not closed in, but rather is at the level of the driveway. It has its own private entry and sliding glass doors. So it’s not claustrophobic.

The main floor to the cabin has the main amenities needed including kitchen, living room, bathrooms and access to the main deck where the Hot tub is. There is no need to have access to the basement unless you have a very large party. Please know that most of the time, groups of nine (9) adults and (2) two children will not have access to the basement, since the main floor with the loft of the A-Frame accommodates and is able to sleep these many guests. Parties that are larger than 11 will have access to the basement, which will sleep up to four adults (has a single full-size bed in a private bedroom and has a full-size sleeper couch). Access to the basement when you have less than 9 adults and two children will incur an additional cost. Please know that at present the basement is being remodeled and painted and is not available regardless of cost. Once it is finished the policy listed will be in place.

The kitchen is a large kitchen with all the basics provided for doing basic cooking (micro, dishwasher, fridge, dishes, pots and silverware).

The main living room is next to the kitchen and there is where you will find one full bathroom. The living room has a fireplace, flat screen TV (50') with cable and surround sound system.

About Fernando & Sissy Soriano

I grew up on a ranch in a rural part of California. Traveling often to Washington DC I found it was a perfect place to stay in touch with nature and to be in a peaceful environment far from the busy urban world. Yet I liked having access to Washington DC, which has all the entertainment one can possibly have from any large city.

Fernando & Sissy Soriano purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Fernando & Sissy Soriano chose Shenandoah Valley

I chose this place because it is full of nature and beauty, which it affords access to the nation’s capital. Whether one wishes to take it easy and just let time stop or be active in water sports or hiking, this place is ideal for both. I cannot think of a more beautiful home for getting away from it all!

What makes this cabin unique

Guests have access to a private entrance to the Shenandoah River, which is just across the home. The area was recently designated a national landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior because of its beauty and historical importance. In particular, a favorite activity is to take the Skyline Drive, which is operated by the National Park Service. Alternatively, visit the Luray Caverns, which is just a 15 minute drive from the home. Shopping and restaurants are just 15 minutes from the home.

The place was very peaceful! I would go back without a doubt! Plenty of space to just relax!

  • 5 of 5

The place was nice all in all! I expected there to be a few bugs here and there simply because of location but that didn't stop our good time. The neighbors seemed to be friendly as well! Great place to visit if you want good ole Mother Nature and the great outdoors feel! The owners were responsive to our questions about anything we asked. I would recommend others to visit. As humans we all have our own opinions about things, this is mine. I could've gotten something different but this met al our needs for the type of getaway we were looking for! Thanks to the owners for the good time!

Great cabin by the water. We had a perfect Christmas!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I needed a nice and cozy gateway for Christmas. We found this place because it was close to the mountains, had a Jacuzzi, had enough beds, and was really affordable for the season we were traveling in. It had everything we needed and perfect according to the listing provided.

To be completely honestly, after we got there, the place was much better than expected. The Cabin was really clean and had more than enough room for all of us. The kitchen had everything we needed for preparing food we brought along. It was really an amazing retreat. It was quite and refreshing from our daily lives in the DC area with work and life responsibilities.

But what we appreciated the most was that the owners were always responsive if we needed anything. Any questions we had, they answered right away. Matter of fact, they went over and beyond. My friend forgot this coffee machine behind after we left and made it back to Northern Virginia. They contact me and let me know that someone forgot the item. They ask if I would like it shipped or if I would like to come back to pick it up. They went out of they'’re way and shipped it for us and really saved us the hassle of having to drive back.

We went to multiple cabins before, but this one was by far the most welcoming one. I am sure we will be coming back very soon.

Thank you again Fernando & Sissy for the nice experience,

Mark

OK, but with some caveats

  • 3 of 5

My friends and I rented this cabin and had an enjoyable time, despite the condition of the cabin. We have rented a few properties in the area at a similar price point. Some of the biggest issues were:

· The bunk bed in the room with three beds does not have any mattresses. They are literally just twin-sized mattress toppers that are so thin you can feel the boards underneath when you lay on them.

· All of the sheets smelled terrible like they had not been dried properly

· Towels did not smell clean either

· The house is just a double wide trailer attached to an A-frame house, so the electrical situation was wonky to say the least. Be careful of using the microwave while watching TV, this flipped the breaker, which was strangely located in one of the kitchen cabinets. The other breaker is on the screened in porch.

· The mattresses in the loft and the master bedroom felt like slabs of stone

· The heater in the main living room and the fireplaces did not work

· Access to the river was confusing to say the least

Some positive notes were that the kitchen was fully stocked with utensils and the hot tub was great. Overall, we had a fun time, but I would not recommend this cabin for families. As a group of friends in our late 20s we were able to overlook most of the problems, but it would be much harder for families with children.

The "Little Vineyard" doesn't come with wine glasses

  • 2 of 5

These owners do the absolute bare minimum to keep making $ on this place.

The "driveway" is the poorest maintained of any on the street. I hesitate to call it gravel because there wasn't much gravel left, it was pretty much just a muddy mess - good luck going uphill on it in the rain, much less snow. There's no exterior lighting downstairs, where you need it most when you're getting out of the car. Near the Jacuzzi, the deck was a slippery lawsuit waiting to happen - covered in algae. Thought it was odd that they kept the jazuzzi running the whole time (expensive and we could've figured out how to turn it on/would have known to turn it on ahead of time), but the fire place pilot light/gas was not on (even though it was supposed to be) and could not be turned on. Not very cozy for a winter getaway.

We were not told ahead of time that no sponge, dish soap, or dishwasher soap would be provided, yet of course we're responsible for cleaning & putting away all the dishes before leaving. Despite an exorbitant "cleaning fee," which they don't mention until you contact them, we were responsible for taking out our own trash, dishes, and my allergies bothered me the whole time (which only happens when I'm in a dusty place...). The cabin is covered in wine & vineyard-related decor - grapes, vines, wine bottle pictures etc - yet the "fully stocked kitchen" included NO WINE GLASSES! Seriously? There were these plastic things that ruined the taste of wine, but no actual wine glasses. There were signs everywhere with elaborate instructions about how to avoid turning the AC/heaters off, what not to do, no smoking signs, etc. We felt like everywhere we turned we might screw something up. Although we kept asking about the grill to try to be prepared before getting there, they responded without ever answering our questions. One of the main kitchen lights was out/sketchy looking, and the place has not been updated in who knows how long, which is not a huge deal but added to the overall apathetic atmosphere.

This place might be good for a huge family/frat party (lots of beds, DVDs...all the signage). However, we will not be going back and would not recommend it for couples' getaways or for people with indoor allergies. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it has a nice view, jacuzzi, and at least wasn't so terrible as to make it impossible for us to have a good time in the area.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and for pointing out needs. The cabin is on top of a knoll, higher than all the others in the area and the gravel driveway is what guests take to get to the top of the knoll. We have tried different ways of maintaining the driveway, but strong storms often ruin the maintenance of the driveway. We will try to find more permanent ways of fixing this perennial problem. The lighting outside is there ready to be used but probably what happened is that our property manager forgot to leave them on for your arrival. So they just needed to be turned ON. Once a year at the beginning of the season in spring we stock the cabin with all basic amenities and when indicated by our property manager or coming or past guests that something needs to be replaced or be bought we do so as soon as possible. We do not know why you did not find some basic amenities, such as wine glasses, if you would have indicated to us that that was a priority for you during your stay we would have made sure our property manager double checked for that item and if not there get it for you prior your arrival. We always want and try to please our guests and their specific needs and that is why sometimes guests indicate what they will be using or needing during their stay, that way we make sure our cabin has those items for them ready to be used and enjoyed during their stay (even if sometimes we make special efforts or concessions; for example we have provided Xmas decorations, baby chairs, cribs, etc). We will make a bigger effort to make sure our cabin has all the basic. Please know that to keep the cost of the cabin down we do not provide some amenities you may find in another cabin that costs more to rent. All by-owner cabins differ in what they offer and the price goes with the level of amenities. Our cabin offers you an affordable price and provides only the very basic amenities. We do appreciate hearing from our guests, and even if most of our reviews have been positive, we like to hear from others with different experiences and expectations. Hence, we thank you for your review and will look forward to addressing issues that need to be addressed.
