Árhvammur, is situated near the renowned swimming pool , Laugaskarð in Hveragerði, a small geothermal town, only 45km away from Reykjavík.
The house is 200 m2 (2153 sqft) with an open family/ kitchen area. It features 4 spacious rooms (sleeps 10 easily) and 3 bathrooms.
The spacious deck is wonderful for outdoor enjoyment, as well as the property itself, which is 11400 m2 (123,000 sqft) or (2.82 acres).
Located 45 km from Reykjavik, Hveragerði may be seen from the vantage point of the Kambar mountain slope, as it spreads out across a 5,000 year-old lava field. Throughout the year, pillars of steam may be seen rising up out of the town – and in summer the town is truly a green community, abounding in trees. A green revolution is taking place as areas of woodland in and around Hveragerði expand, with the locals working together in order to further develop their blossoming town. Our family of 4 spent 9 amazing days in Iceland. The house was in a great location for exploring this beautiful country. The house was just wonderful. It was warm, comfortable, spacious, and fully stocked. Kristin, the owner, was very helpful. There was a Bonus grocery store less than 5 minutes away. The town of Hveragerdi is so cute. It is nestled in a geothermal area, so there is a pool you can swim in, and a great hike up to a hot spring you can soak in. There are even boardwalks and changing areas up at the hot spring. Varma is a great place to have dinner. We spent a fun night at the Blue Lagoon which is about 90 minutes away. We did the Golden Circle Tour. Gullfoss is a unique and powerful waterfall. We drove to Vik which is about 2 hours away. There are waterfalls everywhere along the way. The ones not to be missed are Seljalandsfoss, which you can walk behind, Gljufurarbui which is a few hundred yards away, and the grand Skogafoss. Vik has black sand beaches, and nearby there are the basalt columns, and puffins. We took the ferry another day to Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands.) There is an incredible museum on Heimaey that tells the story of the volcanic eruption in 1973. We also hiked the rim of the volcanic crater. You can still feel the heat. We drove 4 hours to Glacier Lagoon. Unfortunately, it was a very cloudy rainy day, but despite that, the Lagoon is surreal. The next day we did a glacier hike at Skaftafell. This was a definite highlight of our trip. The black and white of the glacier like being in another world. For a different adventure, take a flight up to Grimsey Island. You will be rewarded with a certificate stating you crossed the Arctic Circle! I don't know of another country where you can see waterfalls, green mountains, glaciers, volcanos, beaches and lava fields all in one day. The unspoiled natural beauty if Iceland is something that must be preserved, respected, and cherished. There is so much more we would love to see, and we hope to return again in the future. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home!!
We loved staying in this beautiful home! It was clean, well-equipped, and very comfortable. The location was perfect - close to town, but private with beautiful surroundings. We loved all the trails that were easily accessible from the house. We were a family of six - five adult siblings traveling with our eighty-eight year old mom, and found that we had plenty of room for all of us. Mom enjoyed resting at home, reading books and watching the river while we hiked to Reykjadalur and soaked in the bathing river. We highly recommend this beautiful home and the area in which it resides.
While on edge of town, this house sits in a beautiful setting along a river with steam vents undisturbed by any other home. The owner was extremely helpful before we arrived providing detailed information on activities in area, restaurants, hikes, etc. The house had everything we (6 adults and a child) could need, plenty of room, an amazing outside deck, books, toys (we had a 2 yr old), and all supplies you might expect. The place was spotless with well-equipped kitchen, laundry/dryer and more. We enjoyed the thermal cooking restaurant (amazing cakes) and cooking at the house. There is incredible things to do in area - we did Inside the Volcano - an unbelievable experience and used as base for Golden Circle and visit to Reykjavik. We all wished we could just stay longer even just to relax in the home and explore Hvergardi more!
We traveled to Iceland to meet my parents as they are in the Netherlands and we are in Canada. We thought it would be a great spot to meet and enjoy a family fun vacation as we have two small children (5 months and 3.5 years). The house is simply amazing, modern and comfortable with views all around thanks to the large windows and amazing location, right on the river and on the outskirt of the town hveragerði. The house is fully equipped with everything you can imagine that you need. Kitchen is nicely layed out with a large fridge and freezer and a great island for cooking and gathering around with drinks. In the house were many board games for entertainment as well as lots of lego/duplo, playmobile and other toys for the kids. The bathrooms are great with large comfortable showers, spacious bedrooms and comfortable beds.
The town is an amazing location for a home base to explore the beautiful south region of Iceland. The town has enough to offer such as supermarket, restaurants, bakery etc. Close to the town is an amazing hike to the hot water pools across a spectacular trail that we think is a must if you like hiking and swimming. There is a local rehabilitation centre/Spa which is a 5 minute walk across the river we spent several afternoons here swimming and relaxing in the different hot water pools and playing in the large pool with my 3.5 year old daughter who loved it. Kristin has been extremely helpful with directions and ideas/suggestions of things to do in the area and along the "golden Circle". Her notes were great and we have seen and done as much as we can of the area and highlights of Iceland. Reykjavik is a beautiful city that does not feel like a city and is easy to navigate and walk through with lots of great little spots to stop, eat and drink. Also the food in the restaurants is great and most places will not disappoint!
My wife and I already know that we are not done with Iceland and will come back one day (maybe without the kids;)) to explore more of the country.
I am hesitant to tell everyone how beautiful Iceland is for fear of it getting over run by tourists, but this place is nothing short of breathtaking. First, Kristin is the consummate hostess. She will provide everything you need for an enjoyable stay. The house is outfitted very nicely and the first thing you should do upon arrival is open ALL the blinds for the view! A beautiful river in front (we counted the trout feeding on the surface every night over a glass of wine) and a mountain out the back. One of the best hiking trails in the area *literally* starts outside your door. In 10 minutes you are standing in front of ruins from the 12th century. In 15 minutes you are standing over the hot springs and geothermal features that make the area so popular as a weekend destination for the people of Reykjavik. You can easily walk through the town from the home and if you want to swim in one of the largest pools in Iceland, it is a 5 minute walk from the house. It is 1 hour to Gulfvoss, 50 minutes to Thingvellir, 75 minutes to the black beach at Vik, an hour from the glacier Myrdalsjokull and 45-55 minutes from the most beautiful waterfalls this side of Costa Rica. One of our favorite "creature comforts" was the heated floors. There is something about getting out of bed in the morning to toasty toes!
We will be back!
