Why Karen Hogan or Jeff Hogan chose Silver Gate
We choose this property because of the unique character of Silver Gate. It's a town that is frozen in time. It's quiet, charming, and is a true reflection of western life in the Rockies. Close to Yellowstone, but has none of the hustle and bustle of other boarder towns. One of the best kept secrets out there!

Wonderful winter destination
The Lamar Cabin is a quality, comfortable and well-appointed home away from home. We chose the cabin to be in close proximity to the Lamar Valley and all the wildlife viewing opportunities it has to offer. The Lamar Cabin is just minutes from the Northeast entrance to NYP, but we found the wildlife viewing began even before we reached the entrance. We saw foxes right outside the cabin; heard bison padding down the road in the middle of the night; and photographed a moose crossing the street in "downtown" Silvergate.
The cabin, built by owners Jeff and Karen Hogan, is so well done! Not fancy, but tasteful, warm and welcoming. We brought in groceries (from Livingston) and cooked most nights. I had everything I needed for prep. Someone obviously put a lot of thought into organizing and equipping the kitchen. It was a pleasure to cook there. But on those nights when we wanted to eat out, we headed to Cooke City to the Soda Butte Lodge (and full bar) where we found some great burgers and tasty flatbread pizza. The menu is limited, but nice to know it is there if you need it. There were a couple of other options, but we stuck with the Soda Butte restaurant. Many of the restaurants and most stores are closed during the winter, but you can pick up a snack or a few incidentals and gas up the vehicle at the Exxon in the middle of town.
The Lamar Cabin was base camp for our day-long trips to the park. Once back, we would come into the cabin and turn on the gas fireplace, eat dinner and settle in for a cozy evening of reading or watching TV. Then, up the beautiful wooden staircase to bed! Lots of pillows, crisp white linens and heavenly mattresses made for a good night's sleep.
Cabin manager Jess made sure the cabin was impeccably clean and ready for occupancy! She lives just up the road in Cooke City and it was nice to know she was just an email or phone call away if we needed anything.
Booking was easy through VRBO, and once reserved, owner Karen was more than eager to answer our questions. She provided us with precise directions to the cabin and additional information to help make our stay safe and enjoyable.
Luxury in the Wild
We spent three days here to explore the Lamar Valley in winter. The house is extremely well build and was perfect for the cold weather. The beds and furniture were in great condition and all the well-insultated windows added to the beauty. It is well supplied and we would have been glad to stay much longer. The moose and bison close by gave us a very personal experience for how hard they work to meet the season's demands. We highly recommend this for a small family or group of friends.
The cabin is wonderful and the little town is so great! My son loved the "kids nook" under the stairs. The Beartooth Highway is close by and a must-see. If you like to fish, the creek across the street is great. For breakfast we loved Bearclaw Bakery in Cooke City. It was really nice to have a huge kitchen and washer/dryer. We will be back!
Our family of four spent 4 great nights in the Lamar Cabin in Silver Gate during our visit to YNP. The cabin is comfortable, well supplied, quiet, and very enjoyable. We slept with the windows open and could hear the babbling mountain stream across the road. There is very little in that area at night and had no issues with traffic noise. The Silver Gate community is wonderfully rustic and the folks we ran into and met were very friendly. We really enjoyed having a washer/dryer on site. We did not cook in but all the utensils and pots/pans were available if needed. In previous years we stayed in West Yellowstone and Gardiner, but loved the location of the Lamar Cabin. A bit remote but is there a better way to start and end each day than a drive through Lamar Valley?? I highly recommend the Lamar cabin for its location as well as the quality of the cabin and the amenities.
Incredible location and amentites!
this was a stop for our family of six during a three week journey around Montana and Wyoming. and the amazing drive right out the front door into Yellowstone's Lamar valley often made our 'commuting' back and forth to the other areas of the park better than the actual destination area! i will say it was a joy to find everything we could possibly need. plenty of pots/pans, dishes and utensils in the kitchen! after seeing how complete it was we actually opted to cook in instead of dining out. the two huge bedrooms and the nook bed meant all had plenty of space. the extra 1/2 bath downstairs meant others could bath without feeling they were 'hogging' the bath. the wide open downstairs gave everyone more than ample room to spread out and regroup before moving on. Adding the laundry equipment in made it a joy to pack away clean clothing instead of having to fly with dirty things. and when it all was done we sat on the deck with a glass of wine and enjoyed watching the wildlife walk on the hills right in front of us. we cannot say how please we were to have shared this lovely home for our stay- it would be difficult to find better!
Big Cabin in the Woods
This was a wonderfully appointed, comfortable place to stay for 4 adults, close to Yellowstone and Cooke City. I especially liked having a WASHER/DRYER when we got caught in the rain. We never cooked in; instead ate at 2 marvelous places - Miners Saloon in Cooke City and The Log Cabin Café across the street.
My one complaint is that at $265. a night one should not have to drive the bagged trash to the dump 3 miles away. Check-out was at 10am and the Dump does not open till noon! I would also suggest that basics like paper towels, alum foil be supplied. The house was very well supplied with linens and was spotlessly clean.
All in all, we loved our stay and highly recommend it.
