Beautiful secluded 1450-square-foot mountain home, one of only a handful of private homes -- and the only vacation rental -- located within the Arapaho National Forest, adjacent to the Mount Evans Wilderness Area and close to Echo Lake and Mt. Evans. Hike, cross-country ski, sled, explore, or just relax and take in the million dollar views without leaving the property or getting into a car. Across the well-maintained access road -- Colorado Scenic Highway 103 -- are more Forest Service trails and roads for hiking, snow-shoeing, or cross-country skiing. These trails lead to Mount Evans and the Mount Evans Wilderness Area. The house is privately situated on 16 acres and you cannot see another house or the road from this house or its two decks. Chicago Creek runs through the property for half a mile, providing private views and fishing. Children will love to roam the woods and make forts in the summer or snowmen in the winter. We have a great sledding hill for youngsters, older kids practice snowboarding on the rails we put up in winter. If you do want to get away, it is only 12 minutes to brew pubs and restaurants in historic and charming Idaho Springs and I-70. From the house, it is 45 minutes to downtown Denver in one direction, or 45 minutes to the top of the Continental Divide in the other direction. Loveland Ski Resort is 40 minutes away. Other major ski resorts are just a little farther. Echo Mountain Ski and Snowboard Resort is 10 miles away.
The house has been almost completely renovated in the last year and is tastefully furnished. Large picture windows and sliding glass doors bring the outdoors inside. The living room has new leather couches, a cozy pellet stove, a genuine Stickley rocker, and a 40 inch flat screen tv with DVD and satellite. We recently added free WiFi. A generous movie collection (150 plus) will satisfy all ages and tastes. The house has a huge selection of games (over 20) and books as well. The dining room table expands to seat everyone. The house has high end mattresses and beds with down comforters that augment the quilts and throws for chilly evenings. The house has two new bathrooms, featuring a walk-in two-person slate shower, marble vanity, and slate floors in the master bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances, spices, oils, and cookbooks. It is easy to cook outside on the front deck with the oversize stainless gas grill or on the Weber charcoal grill on the back deck. 7 picnic tables scattered across the property allow you to pick your dining spot.
This summer is booked almost solid, so now is the time to make reservations for next summer or this coming fall/winter season.

Your host Scot Kersgaard and his family bought this property as a weekend retreat and future retirement home and have only recently begun renting it. Our boys spent their childhood wandering in the woods, building forts, and shooting arrows and B-B guns at targets on the old stage coach road that runs through the property. They would pan for gold in the creek in the summer, or snowboard and make ski jumps on the hill in front on the house in winter. The dogs go crazy when they see us get our hiking shoes on, they love the property, too. We live in Lakewood and still come up and enjoy the house. Scot is a journalist and realtor and his wife is a public interest lawyer.
The Owner purchased this house in 2003
We bought here because of the rare combination of proximity to Denver, easy access via a plowed highway, and the sense of remoteness that comes from being on 16 acres next to National Forest. We couldn't have found a more perfect location. It's close enough to town that we can easily come up for only one night, or even just to spend a day hiking. It is also close to numerous downhill ski areas. Loveland is less than 40 minutes, Winter Park and Copper Mountain are less than an hour away, even accounting for weather and traffic.
Our dogs tend to keep wildlife away, but we have seen many deer, foxes, rabbits, and birds. Guests have reported seeing moose and elk. Scot has climbed a nearby 13er without getting in a car. We often go for all-day hikes and then have a nice place to stay without driving back to the city. If we don't feel like a major hike, there is great walking right on the property, with gorgeous year-round white-water creeks and springs, as well as distant views. Old-growth forest features enormous spruce trees scattered among aspen groves.
Couldn't have asked for a better place to unwind from it all. So peaceful, beautiful views to wake up to. Found ourselves daydreaming out the windows quite frequently. Thank you for opening your home for others to enjoy, loved it!
Place is exactly as described. Breathe taking views, plenty of hiking, nice stream on property and Idaho Springs is very charming. We have been looking for a place to go every year and this is it.
Great place to stay, although high elevation made it hard to breath for someone that lives in Houston. Cabin very well maintained. The view from the many picture windows is breathtaking. Secluded and away from everything and everyone. We went in January for skiing and entire group fell in love with the place.
I brought my husband here for his birthday February 2015 and it was just perfect. He said his ideal vacation is a place with land and no neighbors....THIS IS IT! We pulled up to the property and he almost cried it was so pretty. Views everywhere & snow. It was probably one of the funnest times we've had and it was simple and relaxing. We can't wait to bring our children back here!
My husband and I stayed here with another couple - all four of us loved this cabin. I would definitely stay again!
Excellent location to forget about your everyday life! Very peaceful and relaxing for all ages. Property is perfect for family hikes down to the creek, exploring and collecting pine cones. Fire pit in backyard helped us to make the perfect s'mores! House was well furnished and equipped with everything we needed for a pleasurable stay. Quick drive up the road to breath taking views of Echo Lake and Mt. Evans. Would love to return in warmer weather to explore this location further. Highly recommended property for a family vacation.
Private access to one half mile of Chicago Creek for fishing or gold panning!
