A year round destination situated minutes from the world famous Sooke Potholes Park and Galloping Goose Trail, 5 minutes from the Village of Sooke and only 45 minutes from the city of Victoria. It is a bright 1400 square foot two bedroom home with a large and private deck.
The warm master bedroom is dressed with fine linens and is handily located close to the bathroom on the main floor. The second bedroom in the loft has a double bed, sitting area and stunning views of the river. The brightly painted bathroom includes a shower and “maids tub” along with piles of thick towels. The open living room is a cozy sanctuary with comfortable furniture, gas fireplace, folk art, antiques, hardwood floors and rows of windows soaring to the vaulted ceiling. Views of the lawn, decks and river complete the scene with many pots of herbs, flowers and shrubs to enjoy.
The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, which opens directly onto the deck and features a gas barbecue and patio furniture. The path down to the river, through a stand of ancient evergreens leads to a private stretch of river abundant with wildlife. During the months of October and November watch and listen to the Salmon making their way up the river to spawn. This secluded spot is the perfect escape for couples or families with swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, or just relaxing only steps from your front door.

We fell in love with this property 35 years ago due to it's natural beauty and charm. The beautiful river and it's unique rain forest valley surroundings have made it an exceptional place to live.
The Owner purchased this house in 1987
This beautiful property has been in our family for 27 years and we have lived and have raised our two sons on the adjacent property since 1979.
A variety of hiking and biking trails are located within an easy walk from the cottage and range from easy, such as the Galloping Goose to advanced like the Peden Ridge Trail. The Potholes Park along with gorgeous scenery, offers well kept trails and great swimming in the summer months and is a 10 minute walk from the cottage.
I had the great fortune to be able to rent this cottage for a few days this past month. A totally unplanned vacation and what luck I had. Inside and out this is a place is a dream.
The owners Gary and Meredith (two wonderful people) have it decorated so beautifully that you can’t stop walking around and admiring everything. Just when you think you have seen it all you discover another little treasure tucked away.
The season was over at the time i rented so the hot tub was not up and running but that didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the home one bit. It just made me want to come back next year as I can only imagine how unbelievable it must be to be relaxing in the enjoying the warmth of that water while listening to the melody of the rushing water of the river just steps away. The salmon where just starting their journey up the river and one afternoon I saw a bear across the river feasting on one unlucky little guy. Quite an experience as you can imagine.
If you need a break, time to unwind, or a romantic getaway this is most definitely the place and I highly recommend you take a serious look and book it.
As soon as we stepped onto this property, our breath was truly taken away. The outside of the cottage has a spanning yard space and a wraparound deck that is fitted with a picnic table, a barbecue, some lounge chairs and even a hot tub! The far end of the yard has steps that lead down to the Sooke River. We spent many days trekking up and down the river or just sitting near the bank admiring our incredible surroundings.
I hesitate calling the Sooke River Cottage a cottage at all because it is more like a dream home! Seriously, Gary and Meredith, I want a copy of the blueprints ;). The house has one master bedroom with a washroom just off of it, a spacious sitting and dining area and a loft with another bed and sitting area. The kitchen was fully-equipped with everything we could ever need. All we brought along were a couple spices and we were set for a week of good food! The decorating was impeccable and was filled with all kinds of subtle details that made the cottage feel like a real home. I certainly could have gotten used to living there!
When we weren't taking advantage of the amazing home and yard, we ventured out into the charming town of Sooke that has all the necessary amenities and some very friendly locals. If you go to the Village Foods Market, remember to mention you're a tourist - they give you a discount! We also found an off sale liquor store called Buffy's which we used when the provincial liquor board store was closed. The cottage was about an hour's drive from Victoria, and we enjoyed doing some sightseeing there as well.
One of my favourite things about the trip was visiting the Sooke River Potholes. It was only 1.5 kilometres from the cottage, and we were pleased with all the hiking we got to do there. We spent almost an entire day at the Potholes, hiking around, swimming, and just enjoying the scenery. It's a picture perfect place that is just steps away from the cottage - what could be better?
For beach-goers, we were about a 30-40 minute drive from the Juan de Fuca straight/ West Coast. We visited the popular French Beach, but my favourite spot was Sandcut Beach. It wasn't as busy, had a small hike from the parking lot to the beach, and we spent an entire day going up and down the beach enjoying the mountain view - fantastic!
Our stay in Sooke was truly phenomenal. Gary and Meredith were amazing hosts who were incredibly welcoming and kind. I hope we will be able to return again soon. You gotta stay here! :)
This cottage is a jewel box full of beautiful object d'art. Both small enough and big enough, it is efficient, comfortable, clean and complete. There are good chairs both in and out, with easy walking up the road or onto the trail when you need to get moving. Sheltered in tall trees by the river and yet connected to all you'd want to do in the rain forest or by the sea. No matter how long you stay you'll wish you had a few more days.
For a number of years, my wife and I have stayed at Riverside Cottage as an escape from our Ontario winters. The cottage is attractive, spacious, sparkling clean, well equipped and the location provides maximum privacy. The interior is bright with large windows which look out onto a setting of greenery and the The Sooke River. The river has a substantial salmon run in the fall. Hiking in the area is superlative. We hike the river for miles. The scenery is spectacular and much of the shoreline is public parkland with well-marked trails. In addition, the property is adjacent to the Sooke Hills, a huge wilderness area containing a network of trails that could never be completely explored. There are good shopping facilities in Sooke within about a 3 mile drive. The waterfront contains more points of interest, including a number of hikes on public property. In addition the area has many ocean beaches, most within public parks, with associated hikes. Fishing opportunities abound, both in the ocean and in freshwater lakes. Anyone can catch crabs from the public waterfront in Sooke, or collect mussels from various beaches in the area. Wildflowers abound in March. The beautiful city of Victoria is less than an hour down the highway.
And, oh yes, Meredith and Gary, the owners, are outstandingly accommodating and pleasant.
What could be better?

This has everything we were looking for: peace and quiet, beautiful cottage, big well-cared-for yard, full kitchen, and right on the river. Broadband internet is also available.
We spent a lot of time on the rocky beach that runs along the edge of the property. My seven-year-old and I splashed around and caught frogs while my wife picked up interesting stones. There is also a two-man rowboat that we played in.
The owners, Gary and Meredith, live next door, and are some of the nicest people you'll meet. They have lived there for almost 20 years and know all about the area, and were happy to help us set up an itinerary.
We're from Central Texas and were pleased with the cool July weather (the BC summer is more like our winter). And one thing that amazed us: the lack of bugs! In Texas mosquitoes, gnats, ants, and flys are everywhere to bite and sting you. In the Sooke area we were able to hike without bug spray and leave the house doors open for ventilation with nothing flying in.
Would we stay here again? Absolutely.
