Rest and play in our spacious 1800 sf lakeside cottage on all-sports Main Canadian Lake in the beautiful resort community of Canadian Lakes. "Dutch clean" and well-maintained, our split-level cottage received new siding, windows and doors in 2010, and a basement and master-suite remodel in 2012. The inside features fresh white paneled walls and ceilings and cottage-chic furniture in shades of blueberry, apple, white and khaki.

UPSTAIRS - The fully equipped kitchen, which features plenty of cheerful white beadboard cabinetry, includes a gas range, microwave, dishwasher, super-size side-by-side fridge, a walk-in pantry and a handy breakfast bar with stools. It is open to the bright dining room, which shares a wall of sliders with the living room. The gas fireplace and stunning lake views can be viewed from all three areas. The upper deck just outside is very large, with a big gas grill, a large rectangular cast iron dining set seating eight, and an identical table for extra guests or food prep. A large main floor laundry leads from the spacious master bedroom (king bed) into the two-room Jack-n-Jill bathroom and back onto the hall. The home was completely redecorated in 2010 with spunky vintage furniture, fresh linens and new mattresses; everything is kept sparkling clean by family caretakers. Basic cable TV and WiFi internet are provided. The white-panelled walls give the entire home a fresh and airy cottage feeling.

DOWNSTAIRS - The cheerful guest bedroom (queen bed) and nautical 'bunkroom' (sleeping 4) share another full bathroom. A huge recreation area (classic This End Up pullout sofas / games / books/ entertainment center) spans the entire basement lakeside, where two sliders open onto a cement patio just steps from the lake. All bedrooms feature large closets and a vintage chest or dresser for storage...A baby crib and highchair are available on the premises also.

OUTSIDE - Large oak trees frame the street-side of the home, dappling the bedrooms with shade. A green lawn slopes gradually around the house to a flat grassy area between the house and lake. There's additional room to play thanks to the community greenspace lot next door. We have 60 ft of private, sandy-bottomed frontage; a dock, fire pit, and pedal boat; and a wonderful sandy mini-beach with no seawall (perfect for little ones!). We enjoy views of both the sunrise and the sunset. You may use the neighborhood fire pit on the greenspace lot next door as well, as long as you clean up the area before bed! An attached garage offers plenty of storage. We have a ski boat up on our boat lift, rentable to experienced boaters!

RESORT AMENITIES - Canadian Lakes is the largest recreation/resort/residential property in Michigan featuring the best in lakeside living and golf. Enjoy over 735 acres of lakes and ponds (340 of which are connected all-sports lakes); 2000 acres of dedicated green space; three members-only (and you, as our guest!) golf courses as well as the world-class Tullymore and St. Ives courses! Members and their guests also enjoy an airstrip, a campground, 3 children's playgrounds, 8 tennis courts, 2 basketball courts, 1 baseball diamond, shuffleboard, horseshoes, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, multiple parks and 4 huge sandy beaches...our community even boasts a castle! We are a 2 minute walk from the largest beach (we have a volleyball net), and about 5 from the nearest tennis courts! All 5 golf courses are within minutes! This is a beautiful area for bikes and strollers, so bring yours along! Day passes are available for purchase at the fitness center and pools (just $2-4 for unlimited 1-day access to all three). Guest rates will apply at the CLPOC golf courses. You will be provided with a guest pass and a driving pass to the resort. The CLPOC maintains its own website if you wish to see more about it!

THE LAKES - Our home is on the 240-acre all-sports Main Canadian Lake, which connects to the 100-acre all-sports West Canadian, as well as two other small no-wake lakes which beg exploration - you'll enjoy a good workout in the pedal boat! Hundreds of cottages surround the main lakes, but quiet fishing spots abound. LAKES ARE MEMBERS-ONLY, YOU CANNOT BRING YOUR OWN BOAT. Only boats owned by property owners may be on the lake - you can rent ours if you have qualifying experience! We have a mint condition 2007 18' open-bow Monterey 180FS runabout with a 130hp Mariner Volvo inboard/outboard, perfect for fishing, skiing, and tubing all day. It's also perfect for a slow drive up the channel to get ice cream or groceries, or perhaps enjoy dinner at Antler's, which has its own dock/outside dining. Fishing is a favorite pastime on the lakes - they are well-stocked BUT CATCH & RELEASE ONLY (except for bluegill!). You can catch bass right off the dock and seawall! FISHERMEN HAVE STAYED AT OUR HOME, LAUNCHING THEIR OWN FISHING BOATS IN THE MECOSTA CHAIN OF LAKES; THAT PUBLIC LAUNCH IS ABOUT FIVE MINUTES FROM OUR HOME TO THE NORTH.

NEARBY AMENITIES - You'll lack nothing thanks to the Country Corner five minutes away - there you will find a gas station, a convenience store, a full-size grocery store, a pizza parlor, a family restaurant, a fishing license office, the post office, several banks, two health centers, a beauty parlor, a fudge shop, a flower shop, a video store, and our favorite haunt, ACE HARDWARE(marshmallows, bait...). The Royal, St. Ives and Tullymore golf courses also have their own restaurants, and mini-golf (great ice cream!) and riding lessons are just a few minutes further.

Canadian Lakes is the perfect location to vacation. We love our new lake house and enjoyed turning it into a bright and cheery guest home for all to enjoy. We look forward to cherishing many memories here with our own family and friends, and are thankful for quality renters who make this dream possible for us. We hope that you will enjoy our cottage as much as we already do, and that you will return to it each summer. thebluecottageonmaincanadianlake.blogspot

About Bethany Den Hartog

We are a middle-aged (I can't believe I just wrote that!) married couple with young children. Because most of our family and many of our friends live in Michigan, we vacation here every summer. We have finally found the perfect rental cottage to call our own, and hope that your family will enjoy it as much as ours does! Our cottage is lovingly maintained by our family - we remain very active in the cottage on a daily basis, and appreciate your feedback.

Bethany Den Hartog purchased this house in 2010

Why Bethany Den Hartog chose Western Michigan

Ever since our realtor brother introduced us to Canadian Lakes, we dreamed of buying a cottage here. The lakes are beautiful, surrounded by quaint smaller cottages and larger newer ones; the area is very well maintained. The combination of all-sports and quiet lakes is fantastic - plenty of room to boat, ski, fish, canoe...whatever you're in the mood for. But what really sold us on the area was the amenities it offers to us as owners and you as our guests - world class golf, tennis, basketball, baseball, shuffleboard, horseshoes, parks with playgrounds, huge sandy beaches, large public green spaces, indoor and outdoor pools, a workout center...there's no end of things to do! That and the fact that gas, groceries, ice cream and mini-golf are less than five minutes away makes Canadian Lakes just about perfect. It's a wonderful, relaxing place for people of all ages!

What makes this house unique

The best feature of the house is its close proximity to the water. The sound of the waves lapping on the seawall is so soothing, and watching the boats and the fish while eating lunch on the deck definitely puts us in vacation mode. We also love the fact that we can see the kids in the water at all times, and that we have our own little beach to build sandcastles in. The large lawn and the open public greenspace next door offer lots of room for kids to run around, and contribute to a feeling of spaciousness - we don't feel cramped by neighbors! We love the all-white panelled walls and the wall to wall sliders upstairs and down - the house is always bright and airy inside, with fantastic water views. We enjoy the fact that the kids can rule the recroom while the adults relax upstairs with the fire or a good book. And as a mom I am so thankful for the main floor laundry and the big garage to stash all the water toys and life jackets.

Absolutely Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

When I think of the "perfect vacation spot", my mind will always wander to our week at The Blue Cottage! The view and access to the lake was amazing! Everything about the cottage was so accommodating and it had everything we could possibly think of! The owners were kind and helpful, as well as speedy in communication! Our three children (7, 4, and 2), had a marvelous time and are already missing the lake and the wonderful time they had playing in the sand and water each day! We are so grateful for the opportunity we had to stay here during our visit and hope to come back again soon!!!

Wonderful Week on the Lake

  • 5 of 5

My family just spent a week at the Blue Cottage and had a great time making memories. Bethany and Dan were very quick to respond when there was an issue with the boat rental, wonderful people to deal with. The home suited all of our needs, very well stocked with kitchen wear, bedding, toys etc. The home was very clean and well maintained. We loved the sandy beach and the guys enjoyed fishing from the dock. Beautiful home with a great location.

Perfection... Every Year

  • 5 of 5

This was the fourth year in a row that we rented the cottage, and everything was perfect yet again! The owners have attention to detail that surpasses expectations! We wrote a review a few years back, and other than our kids getting older, most everything is the same. There is a new table on the deck which is very sturdy and an upgrade from the old table. The owners continue to make small improvements which enhance the overall experience. The cottage is in great shape, and is immaculately kept.

Again, see our review from a few years back - our kids are 7 and 4 now, and they enjoy catching fish off the dock, playing in the sand, and sleeping in the bunk beds. The cottage simply meets all of our needs and allows my wife and I to shut the rest of the world off for a week. Plus, if you've never seen the sun rise over a lake at 6:30am (in July) this is the place to be!

Thanks again to the ownership for a wonderful week... see you next year!

Wonderful Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Blue Cottage with our family of six and had a blast! Our children range in age from 8 down to 1 1/2 and it was enjoyable for all four of them! The owners were wonderful to work with, were always prompt in responses, and had thought of every last detail. The lists of what's already at the cottage and what you need to bring were very helpful. The cottage itself was beautiful and I kept commenting to my husband how bright and airy it seemed. The setup was perfect and we truly enjoyed our week. We loved how the cottage was RIGHT on the lake and that there was a nice sandy beach area for our kids to play in. The lake was clear and clean and we all enjoyed swimming in it. Our only complaint was that the weather was cooler than we would have liked, but the owners have no control over that. :)

The boat was spectacular. We had a blast going for rides, tubing and even putting around during the "no wake" times. The area around the lake was beautiful, as well. We enjoyed driving to the castle close by, as well as a few other attractions. We witnessed many breathtaking sunsets, enjoyed campfires, and fished our hearts out. I would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone!

Comfortable, well maintained, and well laid out cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this cottage. It is perfect for a variety of uses. My wife and I were there mostly by ourselves but friends would drop in to visit and sit on the deck and over the weekend our adult children visited with some of their friends and easily slept eight with us upstairs and the twenty somethings downstairs. It is well laid out with quality furnishings and house "guidelines" posted throughout. We took walks, met the neighbors, rode bikes, golfed, kayaked, and fished a little(catch and release not my thing). Our guests also played disc golf and used the fire pit. Loons calling in the morning and evenings and ducks and geese swam by during the day.

Canadian Lakes is a private chain of lakes resort area with rules for access to all of the facilities but we were treated just like residents. We took our guest passes with us but never had to show them. Bethany did have stickers for our kayaks but they may have not been necessary for our stay in early June before school let out and lakes were quieter.

Overall a very relaxing vacation spot with as much or as little activity available as you would like.
