Overview

About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

The “Birdcage” is a cozy, rustic cabin with breathtaking views of the Coachella Valley. Sited high atop the Cahuilla Hills (adjacent to Bighorn Golf Club) and enveloped by the Santa Rosa Mountains, it is only 2 miles from downtown Palm Desert.

My aunt and uncle homesteaded this land in 1948 and built the cabin, affectionately known as 'The Bird Cage'. Frequented by movie stars in the 1950s who valued its privacy, it's one of the last homesteads in our area.

The Birdcage has one bedroom with a new queen-sized bed, a bathroom with a good size shower, and a living/dining/kitchen room — all with beautiful views. The large patio is perfect for drinking morning coffee while the sun rises over the mountains, gazing at hawks soaring overhead during the day, or watching the Valley below transition from gold to pink as the sun sets behind you. And at night, the sky holds a canopy of twinkling stars.

With its proximity to nature, The Birdcage captures the ambiance of life in the Wild West, yet the restaurants and world-class shopping on El Paseo (the Rodeo Drive of the desert) are just a 5-minute drive down the hill. Sublime and safe, the entrance to the property is secured by electronic gates and flanked by a beautiful stand of date palms.

About The Owner

We grew up using this property as our own vacation home. Now we want to share it with other. On the lower property we grow date palms and organic vegetables.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1973

Why The Owner chose Palm Desert

You feel worlds away from the congestion of the city. Yet it's only a 5 minute drive to wonderful resturants and shopping. The peace of having wide open spaces and a view of the valley below cannot be beat.

What makes this cabin unique

It's fun to stay here, relaxing, exhilarating at the same time. You're close to hiking, town and all the amenities of the area, yet in this quiet beautiful setting. The city light view is so spectacular that you won't want to go to bed!!

Ask about your dog. Dogs over two years old, well trained are okay. We are dog lovers!

Wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

Looking for a nice place to stay while visiting a dog show in Indio and found this little gem. Wanting to bring our puppy along for the trip we had some concerns but the host Ann put our mind to rest and we quickly came to an agreement. Very friendly and clear communication from the start. Upon our arrival we received a warm welcome from Ann and her dog Gretha and we immediately felt at home. The cabin is nestled on a small hill and the view up there is just amazing. Unfortunately we had some very windy weather so we could not sit on the patio, but the cabin has huge windows with views in all directions so we could enjoy the sunrise in the morning and the Palm Desert lights at night from the cosy sofa inside. The cabin may look tiny but has everything you may wish for. The kitchen is very well equipped and in the bathroom there's a good size shower, with it's own little window so really there is no way you won't enjoy the beautiful surroundings! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this cabin to anyone.

Paradise for nature lovers

  • 5 of 5

The birdcage cabin has lots of open land so you see for miles & the birdwatching is amazing. We like to stay close to nature and we were not disappointed. At dawn, the orange sunrises filled every window & called us outside to hear doves coo. Afternoons were spent exploring the many hiking trails near Palm Desert (early morning at Coachella Vaey Preserve was a favourite) before returning in late afternoon to watch kestrels hunt lizards & Costa's hummingbirds with purple throats chase bugs. The kitchen is simple but equipped with dishes & pots & we loved barbecueing as the moon rose. There is a chimera & we often ended the day with a small fire while listening for the soft hoots of the neighbourhood's great horned owl. The owner, Ann, answers any questions quickly & shares some interesting history on the neighbourhood (Rock Hudson & James Dean used to party here), while giving you plenty of privacy. The cabin isn't large but the bed is comfortable, the bathroom has a view that makes it hard to focus on the mirror, & the decor is eceltric but warm. I felt like I was staying at a friend's home & I will definitely return. For an interesting walking option consider a membership to the Living Desert museum ($99 for 2 for the year) & you can enter at 7 (before gates open) to walk the lush grounds and see giraffes and cheetah while you stay fit. It's only a ten-minute drive from the birdcage.

magical!!! just what i need

  • 5 of 5

This magical gem is exactly what I have been looking for, so close to Los Angeles and yet I felt I was far from the crazy world of things and though forms. Hiking spots close by. I am going to return as soon as time allows. When I needed to go out and see a movie and stop in at a restaurant all that was quite close by. I relaxed on the couch gazed out of the windows looking at all the views , its such a dreamy place. The bed room is cozy with the most comfortable bed , I slept well in this special quite place. I cant wait to return. Made me re boot and love life just knowing this is being shared with the inspired traveler. Thank you .

Amazing place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

It was being hard to find accommodation near Coachella at reasonable prices due to my late decision to attend the Desert Trip concerts. But I discovered the VBRO website and this great Homestead Cabin - on the top of a mountain and with scenic views over the Coachella Valley, I began to fear about its safety for a lonesome (and unarmed) traveler… Ann, the owner, with patience and kindness, helped me up and, after a number of emails, I was reassured and even anxious to arrive in Cahuilla Hills. I drove from L.A. on an almost epic journey: 75 miles traffic jam, which meant 5 hours driving. I arrived in Palm Desert exhausted but, as I entered Ann’s property, I couldn’t feel nothing but the quietness of the place, helped by the well illuminated outside of the cabin, in an attention of Ann to make my late arrival more pleasant. Inside of the house, I was touched by the comfort of the living room and, on the table, a welcoming gift from Ann - a box of dates from her own production. After a 14 hours (hard) journey, came to my mind the expression “Home, Sweet Home“… The Homestead Cabin is an extremely comfortable and clean accommodation, decorated not as a mere space to be rent but as a little house with details that could perfectly turn it as our own house! Its comfort extends to the exterior where you can either have a meal under the front porch, contemplate the magnificent landscape of the Coachella Valley (both at sunset and at dawn) or even feel the quietness of the night in the desert where, with some luck, you might hear the howl of a coyote. Beyond enjoying this outstanding property and attending the concerts, I explored the surroundings: Palm Springs, the Indian Canyons, the Joshua Tree National Park, the Salton Sea area, the Coachella Valley History Museum... All of this beauties and the immense affection of Ann and its daughter Catherine, left on me an immense will to go again to the Homestead Cabin, in Cahuilla Hills. But only the 5500 miles in between will make me think twice before going...

Little slice of heaven.

  • 5 of 5

The Birdcage is a delight - from the sun streaming in the bedroom window in the morning to the quiet beauty of the stars in the evening. Although it got a bit chilly at night during our stay we were very comfortable in the cabin and were able to enjoy our morning coffee out on the patio. Ann is a great host; very friendly and easy to talk to. She welcomed us on arrival but then left us alone to enjoy the cabin as if it were our own. We hope to be back soon!
