This peaceful apartment is on the ground floor with the entrance off the garden. Alameda was developed in the late 1800's as a beach resort community. Today this 3 by 5 mile island is known for its tree lined streets and large collection of Victorian and Craftsman architecture not to mention the cute California bungalows.
Coming on to the island is like stepping back in time where people walk either the interesting neighborhoods or the beach. There are many owner run business from restaurants, nurseries, ice cream parlor, coffee shops, bike shops and a lovely restored Art Deco movie theatre. On the spirited end of the island you'll find award winning Rock Wall Winery, (try Scolaris for lunch while you're in this area) St. George Spirits (Hangar One Vodka) and Fraction Brewery , all facing the SF skyline. Oh, there are two 18 hole golf courses and a 9 hole par3 course at one end of the island. did I say we're only about a 15 min drive to the Oakland Airport?
This oasis is just a ferry ride from San Francisco. Or you could drive across one of the bridges to Oakland and catch the Bay Area Rapid Transit. Oakland (5 miles away) is home to Major league baseball, football, and basketball. An hours drive will take you to the wine country of Napa/Sonoma or to the coast at Half Moon Bay. A 15-30 min drive will take you to one of the Easy Bay Regional Parks with over 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Of Course there is the interesting town of Berkeley just about a 15-20 min drive north.
Within a 6 block radius of the apartment are independent restaurants, bars, grocery shopping, the beach, the movie theater, coffee shops, small shopping center (South Shore Center), many ethnic restaurants, bicycle rentals, bowling alley, public transportation, and the usual, hospital, post office and fast food.
The apartment is outfitted for comfort with crisp white linen dried by the sun, down comforter and pillows, good reading lights, hardwood floors, 2 closets, windows that open, a kitchen with the normal appliances plus sugar, splenda, plastic wrap, coffee and tea to get started, salt and pepper (the little things)- not a lot of clutter- just enough for interest.
Anticipating your needs is what gives me the most pleasure and hopefully that will be apparent as you make your self at home in our peaceful garden apartment.
The apartment was really cute, traditionally furnished and clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen was well-equipped. We parked on the drive, which is a bit steep so you need a good parking brake! The apartment has a lovely little garden just outside and is in a quiet neighbourhood. We said hello to a few neighbours who were very friendly and welcoming. Betty was really helpful over the phone and there was plenty of information about the local area in the apartment. Betty's banana bread was very much appreciated by two hungry and tired travellers!
Even with having to drive to the ferry terminal and pay for tickets, this was still a much more preferable option than staying in the city. There's a great selection of shops and restaurants nearby and the indoor market is great.
We had a great stay and can highly recommend Betty and the apartment.
We stayed for one week in September. This one bedroom apartment was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. It is located in a quiet, safe neighborhood with beautifully restored Victorian style houses all around. Betty welcomed us with banana bread on the kitchen table and gave us lots of suggestions and her contact info in case we required anything. It was an easy walk to plenty of restaurants We didn't ride the local bus and needed a car to get to the ferry terminal or Bart system but parking at the terminals was easy. It did not seem economical to drive into San Francisco, due to limited parking and extremely high daily parking rates.
We were very happy with our choice and would recommend it to couples and single travelers
Really appreciated the welcoming touches such as the banana bread, parking and the short walk to the beach and Trader Joe's. We were on a road trip from Vancouver and the apartment was a lovely home away from home after camping our way to Alameda.
Very clean and comfortable; also, I tend to cook to avoid expensive restaurants when travelling with my kids, so I appreciated the well-stocked kitchen. I also felt the area was very safe which was important when travelling with pre-teen and teen girls.
We were primarily visiting San Francisco and took the ferry each day which adds up when you are 5, if you are looking to keep down costs, take this into consideration. I felt it was worth it (places in San Fran were much more expensive) and I rather enjoyed the short ferry ride at the start and finish of our sightseeing days.
Thank you so much, Betty! I would happily stay again and recommend to friends.
Having been an Alameda residents for 25+ years, we were excited to find this comfortable well located apartment for a return visit after having moved 4 years ago. Great location, quiet, modestly but well appointed. Very clean & Betty was easy to work with. It's a great value for a Bay Area stay! Only caution for the older set: front steps are steep and a shower bar would be a great addition. Parking is a real plus: street parking generally available during the day & the driveway is also available ....we tended to use the street when possible because of the steepness of the drive but having it as a back up was great!! Nice to know we still have a home in Alameda!!!
This apt was perfect for our 3 week visit to California! When you come here, you've come Home! Betty anticipates just what you need. From the banana bread welcome to the down pillows on the bed our stay was great! No problems with parking...Close to shopping, nice area, quick drive into San Francisco. Washer dryer and good internet! We've stayed many places in the area but this is our favorite.
This is our second stay with Betty and it went smoothly as we expected. The apartment is close to shopping on Park street and the South Shore Center. Parking was not a problem and the neighborhood is peaceful. Betty has the apartment well appointed with basics and the banana bread was appreciated. We will stay here again when we return to Alameda.
