We have a full wrap around deck so close to the water it feels like you are floating. We are in a rural area, so it's relaxing and quiet. There are plenty of DVDs, and lots of games. The Puget Sound is located in Washington State. It is cold ocean water, with low and high tides, but no crashing surf. Our beach is wide and open with lots of sand, and plenty of pretty treasures for beach combing. We are close to several towns if someone wants to do shopping, antiquing, go out to eat or to a movie. There are several state parks nearby to hike or pic-nick. Seattle and Olympia are close enough to do a day trip. PLEASE NOTE: we are NOT handicapped accessible.
Wild Life: This section of the Puget Sound has abundant sea life including a small pod of Orca Whales (also known as "Killer Whales") otter, frequent sightings of seals, Red Box crab, and two types of jellyfish. There are moon snail, several varieties of clams that range from smaller than a dime to more than 8 inches across, and whelks. You will find lots of shells. We also have a nearby area that live sand dollars grow. A bald eagle often flies in front of the cabin; gulls, herons, ducks, cormorants, and other birds are common sights. We occasionally hear sea lions at night and seals are often watching us from the water in front of the house.
Parking and Accessibility: We have a large parking space that can hold at least 5 cars, or several RV's. We do NOT have electrical hookup or a dump station. This house is NOT handicapped accessible because the parking lot is at the top of the hill, and there are TWO long flights of stairs connected by concrete pathway to get down to the house on the beach. We have tried to include many of your necessities to enable you to pack light.
Electronics and Entertainment: Our beach house has a Blu-Ray/DVD player in the living room. We keep a large collection of DVDs but there is NO Internet service. There is no TV service, or cable either. Imagine being able to concentrate on interacting with each other instead of faces buried in electronic devices! Cell phone service (both phone and data) are subject to the whims of the cell phone gods... sometimes we get AT&T, sometimes Verizon, and usually Cricket. I'm not sure of the others. We have some games, cards and puzzles, and the lending book library is on the small size for now but growing.
Although we live in Portland, we think it is worth the 3 hour drive to come to the Puget Sound. When my parents were looking for land to build on, they asked around and this development was recommended. The beach is sand and pebbles instead of the more usual large rocks and barnacles. We are blessed with fewer rainy days. The water is so clear and blue with lots of sea life. We tried hard to design our home to have the least impact on the large trees around us, so we have the best of both worlds- a beach home and a forest retreat. Because the island is accessed by bridge, it allows guests to come without worrying about the ferry schedule. We like to come late Friday evening and wake up to the beautiful sunrise. Many of our guests are returning to the area to show their children the magic of Harstine Island that they remember from their own childhood.
We are blessed with a rare house that is right on the water, literally a few yards from high tide. This allows everyone to go out on walks whenever they want, and the children are close to the house for excited trips back to show that "special treasure" they just found!
Our house has an "Open Room" floor plan and all of the living room/dining room/kitchen areas face the large walls of windows. The deck wraps around the main living areas with a sliding door for easy flow of guests through several conversation areas.
Our group had a blast at this cabin. It was a great location and it was nice and clean when we arrived.
We came to Harstene Island to meet up with a larger group of family. This cabin was really only used for sleep and a shower. What a great sleep it was: the bed was very comfy and it was so silent and dark, that we slept deeply.
The beach is sandy and the view is beautiful.
The home is in a lovely quiet spot. The location, layout and amenities were as described. What was disappointing was the lack of care put into the upkeep and cleaning of the home. There was a note from the cleaner, apologizing for the state of the home. She said she usually had help but didn't that day. The floor was quite dirty. I swept the floor before the other guests arrived. There was a layer of dust on just about every flat surface. There were four beds that weren't made. There were piles of linens on those beds, and one of the beds was broken and seemed unsafe. We were missing a TV remote, which meant we couldn't change the volume on the TV. There was a problem with fruit flies, a large and random piece of insulation on a bookshelf, and a cigarette butt on the carpet downstairs. There was a gift basket that was dusty and its contents were all expired; most had expired more than six months ago. My interaction with the owner prior to the trip led me to believe she was conscientious about her property. She said she wanted to know if anything was broken upon our arrival. I emailed her about the state of her property upon our return from our getaway and did not get a response. If she had replied and acted like this was out-of-the-ordinary, or perhaps apologized, I might not have written this review. The fact that she didn't write me back leads me to believe this is not a surprise. Showing up to a weekend getaway and needing to sweep and make four beds is not acceptable.
My family rented this home for our family vacation this summer. The place was wonderful everyone had a great time and the kids didn't seem to miss cable or Wi-Fi. The house had everything we needed for our week there. We will definitely be back soon.
My family reserved this home during a trip for a family reunion. There were 10 people staying in the home (5 adults, 5 children). The view from the balcony in this home is breath taking. Every day we got up, opened the sliding door and sat on the balcony just to take in the view. The Puget Sound was just a few feet from the home. The kids enjoyed collecting sea shells, we saw seals every morning, we enjoyed using the fire pit to make smores. Some of our family from Seattle came to visit one day and loved the location and the view. They commented on how they need to reserve this home too.
The facilities were very nice, silverware, plates, cups, pans were all in great supply. Beds were comfortable, temperatures were great. Cooking utensils were plentiful. Showers were small but worked fine.
We took a trip to the Bremerton ferries and the Space Needle. The kids loved it. We also made a trip to Federal Way for the family reunion, lots of traffic between Seattle and Tacoma.
The only concerns were that the DVD, Blue Ray were not working...however, our kids and grandkids were too busy enjoying the beach and home to worry about the TV. The stairs down to the home are not for the faint of heart. The owner was clear that this property was not "accessible". All of us were breathing hard when climbing the stairs. The owner was also very good, very honest, great to work with.
Still, as my family said many times "this home was worth every penny". Many of them also said that they were going to start saving money for their next vacation in this home. I would recommend it for anyone.
We are located on rural Harstine Island, not far from Shelton, WA. Our house is on the beach, with smooth sand, plentiful shells, beautiful beach pebbles, colorful sea stars, and lots of wildlife. To take advantage of the great views, our living room/dining room 'great room' has a wall of windows looking east with a large deck wrapping around three sides of the house. Bring your fishing pole, or take a nap. Have a sand castle-building contest. Bring your bikes, or hike in one of the nearby state parks. Visit the Wild Felid Advocacy Center of Washington (call ahead for reservations). This is a Wild Cat Sanctuary with 40 cats including Lynx, Bobcats, Serval, a Cougar, and a Leopard. It's only a few minutes drive from our house. Call (360) 427-4466 to make arrangements to tour. Poke around a local plant nursery, or visit our area's resident pottery artist. Enjoy antiquing in Shelton, or going to the movies at the modern cinema or the drive-in movie screen. There is plenty to keep busy, or just relax and let your cares dissolve at our peaceful island retreat.
