About Judah Ritterman
I am from Northern California and chose Villa Hermosa & Arenal for the fresh air, spring water, kind people, hot springs and bio-diversity. We enjoy hosting our guests and sharing the beauty of the pastoral landscape and rainforest. We look forward to making your trip a meaningful and memorable one and have recently established ourselves on Airbnb (we have received hundreds of 4/5 star reviews since 2010 on other sites). Additional questions: I am happy to answer any questions related to Costa Rica, Fortuna/Arenal, The Villa Hermosa, transportation, tours etc. Just drop me a line and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Why Judah Ritterman chose La Fortuna
The Villa Hermosa features a verdant pastoral rainforest - the tropical plants draw a bio-diversity of birds & butterflies. In 2018, birdwatchers associated with Cornell University birding, documented over 60 species of birds on our property during 1 week of the migration period. Our swimming pool has been described as the nicest many guests have ever experienced.
What makes this Villa unique
Peaceful, serene area just 20 minutes from Fortuna and 7 minutes from the world-renowned Springs Resort & Spa. Described by our guests as a slice of paradise - spring water, fresh air, nearby hot springs & rivers - a veritable mini-rainforest abundant in bio-diversity. Pastoral rainforest: -Away from the hustle-bustle of central Fortuna yet close enough to all tours and hot springs. -From our main road "turn left" to Fortuna (Fortuna waterfall, rafting, rappelling, chocolate etc) and "turn right" to Arenal (volcano, ziplining, hiking). -You are equidistant (in both directions) from every major attraction in the area.

Calm and relax spot. Beautiful pool and garden. Nice pool room and Quiet area. Safety place to stay in Arenal.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!
Incredible property. We enjoyed spending time here, by the pool, exploring the expansive gardens and property, playing some of the many games available, having some meals and relaxing. Very comfortable and inviting. Judah was very responsive to any questions, gave excellent recommendations for activities and made reservations for us. A bit off the beaten path, but well worth it. Highly recommend for semi-adventurous travelers!
Judah's VRBO is a great place. The property is immaculate and Judah takes great care to make you feel welcome. I would highly recommend this property for any stay in Arenal. We stayed here for 4 nights.
This property is located very close to the Springs Resort. I highly recommend getting the 2-day pass to the Springs and enjoying their hot springs and activities such as tubing and kayaking.
It takes approximately 20-25 minutes to get to downtown La Fortuna and about the same time to get to the hiking at the Arenal volcano.
The pictures on the listing are exactly what you will get when you arrive. The pool is immaculate and the game room is super cool. Judah lives on the property for most of the year and he will be as available as you need him to be. We enjoyed chatting with him and he was extremely helpful with bookings for various excursions as well as great advice. I honestly have never had a better VRBO host.
I will now address some of the issues brought up in some of the previous reviews:
The road: Yes, it's an incredibly bumpy ride to get to the property. At the same time, the views are astounding and we got our best picture of the volcano on this road. Also, some of the people who have left negative comments about the road are obviously pampered and have never driven on a country road in America. It is what it is. Seriously, what are your expectations when you come to Costa Rica? I would suggest renting an SUV and not a sedan. That might be part of the issue that some people have.
The location of the Toucan house in relation to the main house: Yes, it is a 30-second walk from the main house to the Toucan house. Also, the Toucan house doesn't have wireless. I spoke with Judah about this and I think he's going to get wireless added to that part of the property.
The property is awesome, the pool is epic, and I would definitely stay here again. I would recommend this property for large families or two couples.
Beautiful La Fortuna Retreat
Villa Hermosa was such a unique authentic Costa Rican experience! The main house we stayed in primarily in had no walls, but curtains for privacy and a completely secure, enclosed and air conditioned bedroom. So, it provided the best of both worlds: 1st world comfort for a good night’s sleep in the bedroom and a real outdoor experience in the rest of the house that allowed us to be close to nature, but not too close😊
The grounds and gardens were beautiful. We stayed in virtually every night and enjoyed the sounds of nature (there are many!), swimming pool, billiards, darts, and horse shoes. It was so fun to hang out on the patio in the evening and barbecue.
The hosts Judah and Michelle were attentive and helpful. On our arrival, they met us and gave us an overview of the area and suggested activities. Judah was always available to answer any questions during the trip as well as before to ensure we had a terrific time, which we did!
Sorry for the delay in response - have been doing the social media side of things for the villa.
We had a great time hosting you and was a pleasure to see the family taking advantage of all the wonderful things the villa has to offer.
Be in touch,

A private retreat away from the La Fortuna crowds. One of our favourite VRBO experiences so far!
For our 2nd trip to the La Fortuna area, we wanted an experience different from a hotel stay. Villa Hermosa suited us perfectly.
The property is gorgeous, just like the photos. We used the outdoor kitchen to prepare meals, and ate them at the large table. This outdoor space was also where we relaxed when rain showers arrived, or if we needed some shade.
The king bed provided a restful sleep. Our 12yo son found the queen bed comfortable too. The A/C was a welcome treat after a full day of activities in the Costa Rican sun! The shower in the bathroom was huge, with plenty of hot water available. Most nights our son stayed in Villa Toucan, at the back of the property. It also has modern bathroom and lighting fixtures, and although it had no A/C he was comfortable at night.
The pool area is perfect, and very private. The water is crystal clear and the waterfall and sunken lounge in the pool added to the relaxed vibe. This was definitely our favourite place to hang out.
This place is perfect for nature lovers. We saw and heard many birds during the daytime. At night the frogs, cicadas, and other creatures could be heard. We were fascinated by the leaf-cutter ants tracing paths to and from their colonies. We had NO issues with mosquitoes at the property or at any locations we visited during our stay.
Judah and Michele were such great hosts. Through the booking process, Judah was quick to respond to our questions. They do arrange transportation and tours, but it was more like having a full concierge service available. They have a great rapport with local businesses, and they know which ones to recommend. We did three tours and spent 2 days at The Springs Resort. All our experiences were top-notch. They had our rental car delivered the morning after we arrived. Having all this pre-arranged made our stay worry-free. They were nearby during our stay, and were available to assist if needed.
Finally, we need to mention Mario, their all-star driver! He picked us up from the airport and got us to Villa Hermosa safely. He also drove us to Manuel Antonio after our first week. On both trips, we stopped for dinner and groceries, and he even pulled over to point out a sloth he spotted in a tree! Judah and Michele are lucky to have Mario as their go-to driver.
We can't recommend Villa Hermosa enough. It was the perfect mix of nature, privacy, and relaxation for our family vacation. Thank you so much, Judah and Michele, for hosting us!

Home away from home near La Fortuna
Our family of four spent a few days at Villa Hermosa and found it was a great base from which we could explore the Arenal Volcano area. The pool and open kitchen/lounge area were very peaceful and we enjoyed seeing a variety of birds during our stay. The kitchen is equipped well and the nearby grocery stores are great, so we ended up cooking breakfast and dinner during our entire stay. The Springs Resort is quite close and we fully enjoyed our two-day pass there. It was relaxing, uncrowded and turned out being a favorite destination for our boys. Judah and Michelle were of immense help in arranging our car rental and booking all of our tours during our stay in the area. Of note though is that the Villa Toucan is quite a distance from the main house. Our initial plan to have both kids stay in Toucan was ditched when we realized how far away they would be. All in all, we thought this was a great spot and would highly recommend it!
So glad your stay with us was fun, meaningful & a success.
The distance of the toucan to the pool/villa hermosa seems to be quite subjective interestingly.
Was just responding to another wonderful guest/family review from Todd of Canada whose son Alex was quite comfortable & content in the toucan (with both beds to himself) while Todd & Margo enjoyed their privacy in the VH (villa hermosa).
While walking the manicured grounds yesterday I casually walked from the toucan to the pool/VH & arrived in 45 secs max.
Perhaps they took the longer path near the meditation bench?
Anyhow, most important is that you enjoyed - our goal as much as yours :-)
We are located 2 miles past The Springs Resort & Spa (off the main road that runs from downtown Fortuna to the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal).
Hence, you are equi-distant between all of the best activities in the area (which are found in both Fortuna & Arenal).
Following is a list of most popular activities:
-white water rafting
-hiking at Volcano Arenal National Park
-canyoning/waterfall rappelling (only in Costa Rica)
-canopy/hanging bridges tours
-hot springs (amongst the world's finest)
-animal viewing & wildlife sanctuary tour
- bird watching
-kayaking & tubing
-and so on and so forth
We also happen to be the most convenient location for heading out to Rio Celeste or the Venado caves.
The swimming pool (amongst the nicest experienced by our guests according to reviews) is a 2017 re-model, maintained in pristine beauty by our dedicated gardener.
