~The privacy you want - The service you need ~

We are 15 minutes outside of the bustling town of La Fortuna, ranked #1 in the world for experiential travel.

Spend your days on outdoor adventure tours in Fortuna/Arenal and return to the Villa in the evening for rest, relaxation and good times with your family or group.

Whether by day or evening, the Villa is all yours during your stay. We are visited by over 60 species of birds during the migration period, a veritable bird sanctuary.

You are close to all of the outdoor adventure attractions and hot springs, yet you have a private place to enjoy and retire whenever you like. Our guests find this to be the ideal combination.

Take a relaxing day at the Villa to soak in the pool, explore the tropical garden and read in the outdoor living room.

One guest recently wrote (August, 2018): “The nicest pool water I have ever swam in!" - Robin M. (Baltimore, Maryland)

On-site, you will find a game-room equipped with an official pool table & dart-board, a mini-bar & a mini-fridge. We also have horseshoes next to the Villa Hermosa, on the lawn area.

The temperature here is just about always 73-77 degrees, you will never feel cold AND you will never feel too hot or muggy.

We have outdoor fans to complement the outdoor bbq, kitchen and living room.

The bedroom is equipped with A/C.

You will not need A/C in the Villa Toucan which has an open floor plan and windows (with screens to prevent any insects from entering).

We have 2 newly paved roads on the way to the property; one is between La Fortuna and The Springs Resort & Spa, the other runs from La Fortuna to the town of Monterrey and directly to the Villa.

Once you have booked we can arrange your transportation (shuttle-van driver from the airport or previous hotel AND rental car) as well as outdoor adventure tours.

We can also help you to navigate our area which will come in handy when going on tours, hiking near the volcano, exploring waterfalls etc.

We have a property manager who lives on site and is available during your stay to insure that everything goes smoothly.

Whether bonding with family (nuclear or multi-generational) or taking a romantic excursion, the Villa never ceases to "wow" and amaze guests with its breath-taking beauty and serene surroundings.

About Judah Ritterman

We are Northern California natives. And we can't get enough of the Costa Rican rainforest. The beauty and diversity of life here is staggering. We drink spring water and breathe country air. We look across the valley and see magical sunsets.

Each day is an adventure, surrounded by outdoor adventure acitivites from ziplining to white-water rafting to waterfall rappelling.

Judah Ritterman purchased this villa in 2009

Why Judah Ritterman chose San Carlos

Our area and property are unique in that the temperature is always perfect and we have few bugs or insects. This is a rare combination in Costa Rica.

Moreover, everything blooms, blossoms and grows here. Our tropical plants draw a diversity of butterflies, birds and frogs.

Birdwatchers recently found over 60 species of birds on the Villa Hermosa property during a week of the migration period.

Our swimming pool is recently remodeled as well (May 2017).

What makes this villa unique

This is in a quiet neighborhood just 15 minutes from La Fortuna.

We are blessed to have a slice of paradise with spring water, fresh air, nearby hot springs & rivers and wildlife abounding.

Stay at the Villa Hermosa and visit the world-class Springs Resort & Spa with a 2-day pass. Enjoy the privacy of your villa as well as the hot springs, restaurants and outdoor activities at The Springs Resort. We are less than a 10 minute drive from The Springs.

Pura Vida ("Pure Life") indeed!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Villa Hermosa and Villa Toucan were the perfect accommodations for our family. We opted for Judah's driver, Mario, to pick us up at the San Jose airport and take us to an excellent rental car agency in Fortuna where we picked up a 4x4 SUV along with GPS. After a quick stop at the grocery store, we drove to the property and had no problem finding it using the directions which had been sent to us. The owner, Judah, lives on site and is an American expat from California who was extremely helpful in recommending and booking activities for us before our arrival. We spent two days at The Springs Resort where we toured the wildlife preserve, kayaked, soaked in the numerous hot springs and enjoyed a delicious Costa Rican lunch. We also went white water rafting, rappelled waterfalls, and hiked to Fortuna Waterfall. We had an amazing guide at the hanging bridges hike who showed us bats, a viper snake, monkeys, a sloth, and a crested owl. Judah also suggested and arranged for us to go on the a chocolate tour where we learned how chocolate is made and sampled the most delicious chocolates. At the end of every day, we looked forward to going back to Villa Hermosa and relaxing. In the evenings, Judah would check on us to see how our day went and to see if we needed anything. It was so nice having the privacy of the two villas and pool but at the same time having Judah close by in case we needed help. With all of the water activities, we always had wet clothes and it was so helpful to hang them out to dry on the large drying rack that Judah provided on the patio. We enjoyed being able to cook dinner outside using the gas grill and two burners while our sons played pool and darts in the game room or connected with friends on social media through the free Wi-Fi. The lush tropical gardens are absolutely stunning, and we really enjoyed walking the many paths throughout the property. The abundance of wild ginger and heliconia attract a lot of hummingbirds. Surprisingly there were no mosquitoes. Once the sun went down, it was fun searching for the red-eyed tree frogs around the frog pond. In the mornings, we enjoyed drinking our coffee while watching the many varieties of colorful birds eating our fruit scraps on the stone “altar”. We highly recommend this property to families who want to experience Pura Vida!

Fabulous villa with awesome pool and grounds!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (two adults and two 17-year old boys) stayed at the Villa Hermosa and had a fabulous experience! The pictures do not do the villa justice – it is even more beautiful when you are actually there. It is also very relaxing and homey. Judah was wonderful answering our questions before we arrived and helping us plan our itinerary. The house and the grounds are amazingly beautiful. It was fun to cook in the outdoor kitchen with the wonderful grill. The bar area was super nice for breakfast and snacks. The curtains that surround the kitchen/dining/living area were very functional. We opened them in the morning to let in light and to enjoy the beautiful foliage and then closed them when we left the grounds and at night when it was nice to have “walls.” One of the best parts of the villa is the pool! Oh my gosh! The pool is beautiful and the waterfall is very nice but it is the water in the pool that is truly amazing -- it felt like cool mineral water. The water felt so wonderful on our skin -- I have never swam in a nicer pool! The pool is also long enough to swim laps. Another part of the villa we enjoyed was the extra building with the pool table. We ended up playing pool almost every night and had a blast. Playing pool turned out to be a nice family activity that we all enjoyed. I would highly recommend The Springs Resort and Spa Club Rio 2-day activity pass (we did horseback riding and tubing) and the Rainforest Chocolate Tour (superb!). We had an amazing time at the Villa Hermosa. The Villa is great for people who want to be in peaceful surroundings and away from the crowds. It is remote, but worth it to be able to stay in a beautiful house and have the fabulous grounds to enjoy. Judah was so helpful and we feel like he is our friend now. This place is really magical and we have many great memories from our time there.

Owner's Response: Hi Robin, Fills our hearts with gladness to know what a wonderful trip you and your family had. This is why we do it, more than anything else - to create a space where families can breathe and relax outside of the rush-rush of daily life. Thrilled that you were able to create lasting memories and to experience first-hand what the peacefulness and beauty of nature are all about. Let's indeed keep in touch - and there is nothing more important for us than to make long-lasting and genuine friendships. Sincerely, Judah, Michele, Misael & Tania

Fantastic trip to Costa Rica!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 10 days in Costa Rica, 5 in La Fortuna and then 5 at Playa Conchal. Our favorite place was definitely La Fortuna!! There is so much to do and the people were amazing!! To begin, our stay with at Judah's place was fantastic, beautiful and a little peace of our own heaven. Judah was so kind, helpful and diligent in setting up our driver, car and amazing tours. The tours we went on were zip lining, white water rafting, riding ATVs, horseback riding and a day at the Springs. All of the activities were outstanding!! I wouldn't have given up any of them and there certainly wasn't one that was better than the other. Overall, our experience was top notch and we can't recommend La Fortuna, the activities and people enough!!! You will not regret your stay and adventures!!!

Very reasonably priced and ideal for family

  • 4 of 5

The property is a 15 minutes drive from the main road and located in a very quiet and safe area . The 2 guesthouses are large enough to accommodate our family of 6 including 2 kids. The main guesthouse is clean with air conditioning and a good size bathroom.; the smaller one is fine for 2 people. The common open area is pleasant with plenty of space for entertainment and a fully equipped kitchen which is a plus to prepare breakfasts and perhaps some dinners if you don't want to go out .

The landscaping of the property is beautiful with a good size swimming pool as a center piece. You can observe birds and frogs in the ponds within the property which add to the charm of the place.

Despite the beginning of the rain reason, we enjoyed very much our stay at Villa Hermosa.

Amazing Property!

  • 4 of 5

My family of four stayed here July 14th to July 17th, 2018. We had an amazing time! The house is just as it is shown, but better and more vivid to see in person! We loved the open areas and appreciated that the bedroom was closed off and included A/C. We saw tons of frogs and birds during our walks on the property. We cooked several meals in the outdoor kitchen (there is no oven just a grill and a stove top). Judah and his mother were great host and helped with our car rental and tours. The Springs Resort Day pass was wonderful! Judah also arranged Mario to pick us up from the airport and drive us to the house. He then had the car rental company deliver our car to the house the following morning. This is the one thing I highly recommend! Mario took us to a local soda on the way and we had a delicious authentic Costa Rican meal. He made several stops on the way so we could see sloths, monkeys and rainbow trees, etc. He also took us to the grocery store before we arrived at the rental. Having a driver after traveling all day was one of the smartest things we did. I can't imagine making that drive alone never driving before in Costa Rica! My only regret for the whole trip was leaving here to stay at Tabacon Springs Resort. Although, Tabacon is very nice, I wish we would have done a day pass only and stayed another night here. Thanks Judah for everything! The Libharts

Perfect mix of beauty and fun!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. Villa Hermosa was so charming - it was a secluded oasis with amazingly beautiful grounds. There was so much nature - birds, frogs, etc. And bats at night kept the mosquitos away! We had so much fun playing pool and darts in the game room, playing horseshoes in the backyard and swimming in the pool! Judah helped us plan all of our activities - rafting, zip line, hot springs, hanging bridge hour. He knew the best ones and made all our reservations for us. Every single excursion was perfect! I’d certainly recommend Villa Hermosa to anyone traveling to Costa Rica.
