Two guesthouses on 1+ Acre near La Fortuna & the Arenal Volcano-Costa Rica

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,000 sq ft
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Both Villas: 2 separate living spaces, 2 bedrooms, 3 bath, sleeps 7

We are located off the main highway that runs from La Fortuna to the Volcano Arenal/Lake Arenal. As of August 2017, we have a newly paved road from La Fortuna to The Springs Resort & Spa (our road). You will have the private guesthouse, pool & patio all to yourself on one + acre in the scenic countryside.

The Property Managers are on-site if you need anything at all to make your stay here in Costa Rica as wonderful as possible.

The Villa Hermosa is located far enough for privacy & but close-enough to the attractions when you're ready to see the sights!

On a clear day you can see Volcano Arenal from the manicured jungle.

The pool is recently remodeled and surrounded with exotic plants that attract tropical birds.

When the banana's are ripe you will see birds of every variety.

Our area is considered 'the adventure capital' of Costa Rica. So most outdoor adventure activities and sports (including most water sports) can be found here.

For families: If you are looking for a place that it is safe for your kids to run around or explore without worry, than The Villa Hermosa will be a good fit for you.

For couples: Whether you just got married, are celebrating a special occasion or are just looking for some privacy, this is the perfect place for you!

You get all of the benefits of having a private guesthouse but have the owners close by if you need anything at all. We realize everybody is different so we ask you (upon check-in) what you want from us so we can make sure you get it; if you don't want to see us for the entire visit, we'll make ourselves scarce. If you enjoy having another couple around to chat with, we'll be here...whatever style works for you we'll make sure your stay is outstanding!

We are a private property with a gated entrance and a fully-enclosed 1+ acre property. We have native plants, trees, flowers, birds, butterflies, frogs and lots of wildlife so your family or group will have plenty to see.

Our guests enjoy being in close distance to all of the major hot spring and outdoor adventure attractions while being able to come home to a space that is totally private (and not shared with another family, i.e. like at a hotel).

We have many games on-site that are good for both adults and children, including shooting pool, throwing darts and tossing horseshoes.

About our area: We are 20 minutes from the main road that runs from downtown La Fortuna up to the Volcano Arenal/Lake Arenal.

We are located in a pastoral area just outside of city where you come home to relax after a good day hike or a waterfall rappelling tour.

We hope to make your experience as rich and meaningful as possible.

About Judah Ritterman

We are Northern California natives. And we can't get enough of the Costa Rican rainforest. The beauty and diversity of life here is staggering. We drink spring water and breathe country air. We look across the valley and see magical sunsets.

Each day is an adventure, surrounded by outdoor adventure acitivites from hiking to kayaking to tubing.

Judah Ritterman purchased this villa in 2009

Why Judah Ritterman chose San Carlos

Our area and property are unique in that the temperature is always perfect and we don't get many mosquitoes. This is a rare combination in Costa Rica.

Moreover, everything blooms, blossoms and grows here. So we have a re-forrested property with tropical plants that draw a diversity of butterflies, birds and frogs.

We also recently remodeled the pool for your enjoyment.

The more I travel around Costa Rica the more we come to appreciate the Fortuna/Arenal area.

What makes this villa unique

This is in a quiet neighborhood just 5 minutes from a true 'Tico' town...what La Fortuna center was probably like about 20 years ago.

We are still lucky to have a slice of the real Costa Rica, even as our area is up & coming with newly improved roads.

With regards to The Springs Resort & Spa, we are the closest, most affordable and most private guesthouse option in the area.

The Springs Resort & Spa has everything you can think of: hot springs of every variety, a wildlife rescue, kayaking, tubing, rock climbing, 3 restaurants, a video game name it...Pura Vida indeed!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Villa Hermosa and Villa Toucan were the perfect accommodations for our family. We opted for Judah's driver, Mario, to pick us up at the San Jose airport and take us to an excellent rental car agency in Fortuna where we picked up a 4x4 SUV along with GPS. After a quick stop at the grocery store, we drove to the property and had no problem finding it using the directions which had been sent to us. The owner, Judah, lives on site and is an American expat from California who was extremely helpful in recommending and booking activities for us before our arrival. We spent two days at The Springs Resort where we toured the wildlife preserve, kayaked, soaked in the numerous hot springs and enjoyed a delicious Costa Rican lunch. We also went white water rafting, rappelled waterfalls, and hiked to Fortuna Waterfall. We had an amazing guide at the hanging bridges hike who showed us bats, a viper snake, monkeys, a sloth, and a crested owl. Judah also suggested and arranged for us to go on the a chocolate tour where we learned how chocolate is made and sampled the most delicious chocolates. At the end of every day, we looked forward to going back to Villa Hermosa and relaxing. In the evenings, Judah would check on us to see how our day went and to see if we needed anything. It was so nice having the privacy of the two villas and pool but at the same time having Judah close by in case we needed help. With all of the water activities, we always had wet clothes and it was so helpful to hang them out to dry on the large drying rack that Judah provided on the patio. We enjoyed being able to cook dinner outside using the gas grill and two burners while our sons played pool and darts in the game room or connected with friends on social media through the free Wi-Fi. The lush tropical gardens are absolutely stunning, and we really enjoyed walking the many paths throughout the property. The abundance of wild ginger and heliconia attract a lot of hummingbirds. Surprisingly there were no mosquitoes. Once the sun went down, it was fun searching for the red-eyed tree frogs around the frog pond. In the mornings, we enjoyed drinking our coffee while watching the many varieties of colorful birds eating our fruit scraps on the stone “altar”. We highly recommend this property to families who want to experience Pura Vida!

We're a family of five (kids ages 11, 9, 7) who enjoy adventure and a safe, serene place to come back to relax at the end of a full day. This home, The Villa Hermosa, fit the bill perfectly! The homeowners, Judah and Michele, were wonderful to work with. Judah arranged for us to rent a car from Alamo in the town of La Fortuna. We thoroughly enjoyed the drive to the home as it didn't take us long, and the views of nearby Arenal Volcano are stunning! As we pulled into the gated entrance of the property, we were so impressed by its overall beauty; you really have to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it. We rented both houses and everyone slept soundly. We asked Judah to schedule three excursions for us: the hanging bridges tour, waterfall repel, and whitewater rafting. We simply showed up where he told us to, paid, and made lifelong memories! He made everything so simple. In our spare time at the house we played darts in the rec room, horseshoes, went swimming in the pool, walked the beautifully landscaped grounds, and even bird watched. In the mornings, thanks to another great tip from Judah, we'd drive into La Fortuna to a restaurant, The Red Frog, to have coffee and the best breakfast in Costa Rica. The owner of the restaurant, Roy, roasts the coffee in front of you, and his chef, Jeanette, is wonderful! Also, each evening we took advantage of a short drive to dine in the nearby town of Monterey where we met the kindest locals. As we left The Villa Hermosa to head back to the airport, quite early in the morning I might add, we were pleasantly surprised to have to wait (maybe three minutes) due to locals on horseback driving their cattle across the road to a nearby field with the striking Arenal Volcano in the background. It was an awesome sight to see and I was thankful to capture it on video too! My kids thought it was equally as cool as I did. We truly wish we could've stayed here longer, and hope to come back again someday! Thank you again, Judah and Michele, for taking such great care of my family!!!

Unique accomodations that we perfect for our family

  • 5 of 5

The property is stunning and the two villas, game room and pool were just what we were looking for to relax and enjoy Costa Rica outside of the city. Judah and his mother could not have been more welcoming and helpful.

This is not resort, so you cook your own meals - which we loved. There is a beautiful resort very close by with great restaurants and multiple activities that you can access for a reasonable fee. We loved the open air environment of the villas, tours in the area and lazy afternoons in the beautiful pool.

We visited four distinct areas of Costa Rica and this is one that we will likely return to and recommend to our friends. It was as close to perfect for us as it could be.

Thank you, Judah for your assistance through out the process.

Pura Vida - Gay, Steve, Grace, Tatum and Harper.

Perfect location for a romantic get away.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Hermosa. The grounds were beautiful and the accommodations were excellent. Judah and Michelle were welcoming and very helpful in suggesting and booking activities for us. What a peaceful place to stay away from the fast pace of La Fortuna. The beautiful birds were abundant on their property and so much fun to observe. We also enjoyed the game room, playing darts and pool an d sitting by the beautiful pool.

Beautiful Grounds in Rural Setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely, well-maintained property about 30 minutes outside of La Fortuna (where you will want to stock up on food). Like much of this beautiful country, expect some rough rutted roads to reach the property, where you will want a high-clearance vehicle. The main casita, where we stayed, is indoor/outdoor living. The bedroom and bath are inside, the living and dining area and kitchen are outside. We loved this setup as it allowed us to enjoy nature. However, you will want to store away all of your food at night, as we had some midnight racoon visitors that thoroughly enjoyed our papaya. The bed and bath are nice with hot water in the shower, but none in the lavatory, which is typical of Costa Rica. The kitchen is adequate for simple cooking, but would not be classified as gourmet. There is no hot water at the sink for washing dishes. Judah, the owner, is very attentive and responsive and will help you book tours if you wish. He was also good at communication prior to our visit. The Spring resort, just 15 minutes away, is not-to-be-missed for its amazing grounds and hot spring pools. As it was cool when we stayed, we did not get to enjoy the pool on the property, but the birding was great and would be worth the visit alone. When you book your stay here, make for sure you understand what you are getting. If you want to use the smaller casita, which sleeps an additional three people, it will cost you additional. We did not understand this when making the booking. We would certainly stay here again.

Owner's Response: Hi Jim & Jan, We were so excited to host a professional birding couple. We can't wait to see your photos of the 40+ species of birds that you captured from outside the Villa Hermosa. Best, Judah & Michele

Perfect place for a family!!

  • 5 of 5

This place was great for our family of 5 (3 kids - 11, 8 and 6). We loved the different spaces (outdoor kitchen and sitting area that is covered - which is great because even when it rains, you can be outside, pool area and deck and games 'room'). The kids basically had free run of the property and we could have stayed much longer! It is on a rural/rough road so we were happy we had an SUV and we liked the fact that after a full day of activity in the tourist hubs that we could come back to our quiet oasis. The property is beautiful and spacious. It is well equipped and we ate most meals in. Judah was very helpful in organizing activities (springs resort 2 day trip, hanging bridges and zip lining). He was extremely easy to get a hold of if we had questions, needed directions etc. The other thing we loved about this property is that the other guesthouse is not rented unless you are in the same party, so we were the only guests there.

Beautiful Place and awesome service

  • 5 of 5

The property is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. A bit of a challenge to get there (the road is rough; HIGHLY recommend an SUV type vehicle to get to the location). Upon arriving, however, everything is immaculate. The grounds are spectacular, the pool is beautiful, the layout is superb and everything was very clean and tidy. We enjoyed spending our evenings in the villa and cooking dinner in the outdoor kitchen area. Judah was great helping us by coordinating some 2-day passes at the Springs Resort (well worth the $$) and a whitewater rafting trip that included lunch (also well worth the $$).

We are located 7 km off the main road that runs from downtown La Fortuna to the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

The activities here are endless but some of the most popular include: ziplining, white water rafting, hiking at Volcano Arenal National Park, canyoning/waterfall rappelling (only in Costa Rica), canopy tours, hot springs (some of the world's finest), horseback riding, animal watching, bird watching, fishing, kayaking, tubing, wind surfing, ATV/Quad tours, spas, mountain biking...and the list goes on.

We are on the way to Rio Celeste, the Maleku Indians & the Venado Caves (closer than staying in La Fortuna/town).

We just finished a gorgeous pool re-model in May 2017 for your enjoyment.
