Two guesthouses on 1+ Acre near La Fortuna & the Arenal Volcano-Costa Rica

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Both Villas: 2 separate living spaces, 2 bedrooms, 3 bath, sleeps 7

We are located off the main highway that runs from La Fortuna to the Volcano Arenal/Lake Arenal. As of August 2017, we have a newly paved road from La Fortuna to The Springs Resort & Spa (our road). You will have the private guesthouse, pool & patio all to yourself on one + acre in the scenic countryside.

The Property Managers are on-site if you need anything at all to make your stay here in Costa Rica as wonderful as possible.

The Villa Hermosa is located far enough for privacy & but close-enough to the attractions when you're ready to see the sights!

On a clear day you can see Volcano Arenal from the manicured jungle.

The pool is recently remodeled and surrounded with exotic plants that attract tropical birds.

When the banana's are ripe you will see birds of every variety.

Our area is considered 'the adventure capital' of Costa Rica. So most outdoor adventure activities and sports (including most water sports) can be found here.

For families: If you are looking for a place that it is safe for your kids to run around or explore without worry, than The Villa Hermosa will be a good fit for you.

For couples: Whether you just got married, are celebrating a special occasion or are just looking for some privacy, this is the perfect place for you!

You get all of the benefits of having a private guesthouse but have the owners close by if you need anything at all. We realize everybody is different so we ask you (upon check-in) what you want from us so we can make sure you get it; if you don't want to see us for the entire visit, we'll make ourselves scarce. If you enjoy having another couple around to chat with, we'll be here...whatever style works for you we'll make sure your stay is outstanding!

We are a private property with a gated entrance and a fully-enclosed 1+ acre property. We have native plants, trees, flowers, birds, butterflies, frogs and lots of wildlife so your family or group will have plenty to see.

Our guests enjoy being in close distance to all of the major hot spring and outdoor adventure attractions while being able to come home to a space that is totally private (and not shared with another family, i.e. like at a hotel).

We have many games on-site that are good for both adults and children, including shooting pool, throwing darts and tossing horseshoes.

About our area: We are 20 minutes from the main road that runs from downtown La Fortuna up to the Volcano Arenal/Lake Arenal.

We are located in a pastoral area just outside of city where you come home to relax after a good day hike or a waterfall rappelling tour.

We hope to make your experience as rich and meaningful as possible.

About Judah Ritterman

We are Northern California natives. And we can't get enough of the Costa Rican rainforest. The beauty and diversity of life here is staggering. We drink spring water and breathe country air. We look across the valley and see magical sunsets.

Each day is an adventure, surrounded by outdoor adventure acitivites from hiking to kayaking to tubing.

Judah Ritterman purchased this villa in 2009

Why Judah Ritterman chose San Carlos

Our area and property are unique in that the temperature is always perfect and we don't get many mosquitoes. This is a rare combination in Costa Rica.

Moreover, everything blooms, blossoms and grows here. So we have a re-forrested property with tropical plants that draw a diversity of butterflies, birds and frogs.

We also recently remodeled the pool for your enjoyment.

The more I travel around Costa Rica the more we come to appreciate the Fortuna/Arenal area.

What makes this villa unique

This is in a quiet neighborhood just 5 minutes from a true 'Tico' town...what La Fortuna center was probably like about 20 years ago.

We are still lucky to have a slice of the real Costa Rica, even as our area is up & coming with newly improved roads.

With regards to The Springs Resort & Spa, we are the closest, most affordable and most private guesthouse option in the area.

The Springs Resort & Spa has everything you can think of: hot springs of every variety, a wildlife rescue, kayaking, tubing, rock climbing, 3 restaurants, a video game name it...Pura Vida indeed!

Guestbook comments from the manager

The Villa Hermosa guesthouse is a relaxing and well appointed retreat near La Fortuna. My family and I stayed at the guesthouse for 5 nights in early august. The accommodations were perfect for my family of four. We spent our days exploring all that La Fortuna/Arenal has to offer and then we would return to the guesthouse for fun and relaxing afternoons and evenings. We enjoyed swimming in the pool and some fierce games of horseshoes, darts, and pool. Wendy served delicious breakfasts and booked our activities. We especially liked Danny Vega, the guide she reserved for our Hanging Bridges tour. The Villa Hermosa gardens are lovely and the outdoor living space is really inviting. The ten minute drive from the main road offers some truly spectacular views of the volcano on one side and the gorgeous valley on the other side. We loved our stay at Villa Hermosa guesthouse!

We are located 7 km off the main road that runs from downtown La Fortuna to the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

The activities here are endless but some of the most popular include: ziplining, white water rafting, hiking at Volcano Arenal National Park, canyoning/waterfall rappelling (only in Costa Rica), canopy tours, hot springs (some of the world's finest), horseback riding, animal watching, bird watching, fishing, kayaking, tubing, wind surfing, ATV/Quad tours, spas, mountain biking...and the list goes on.

We are on the way to Rio Celeste, the Maleku Indians & the Venado Caves (closer than staying in La Fortuna/town).

We just finished a gorgeous pool re-model in May 2017 for your enjoyment.

Far Exceeded our best expectations!!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect for our family!! Pictures online can’t capture the natural beauty of this home. We arrived and received a warm welcome from the hosts who reside onsite in one of the three homes on the property. The rental included a private main home plus a small onsite cottage nestled away on the property within the jungle. Kids loved the cottage and stayed there at night. Included was a beautiful pool which we enjoyed each night. NO MOSQUITOS!!! For real, not a single one and we enjoyed the outdoor kitchen and living areas fully. Very clean 2 plus acre property with its own nature trail through the jungle, made our own night jungle expeditions right on property, very fun!! There is even a covered structure that has a pool table, dart board, and bar next to the parking area on property. Judah the owner was extremely helpful in helping us select and book activities. We went whitewater rafting and used Wave Expeditions as the tour operator...super fun and safe. We also went to the must see Fortuna waterfall. The Mystic hanging bridges were a beautiful easy hike. Judah also recommended the Springs Resort and Spa, WOW, best recommendation ever, over the top beautiful and very close to this property. Judah also recommended a tour of Proyecto Asis, a Costa Rican animal rescue place, we got to feed and see monkeys, Toucans, Macaws etc ..., we all loved it especially the kids. 2.5 hour drive from San Jose, beautiful easy drive, recommend small SUV or better for some dirt roads near property. Judah your the best, thank you for all the help your Home is a treasure which we hope to visit again and again 😄

Owner's Response: Hi Glenn & Kathleen (and the boys), It was a pleasure to help guide your vacation along its adventurous route. You did a wonderful job of exploring many great activities while you were here. The Villa Hermosa crew had a great time hosting and getting to know you, myself included. Let's keep in touch via Facebook. Whenever you need to get away from it all and experience the pure natural beauty of nature & wildlife, we will be here for you and at your service. As they say in Costa Rica, 'a tu servicio' and 'para servirle'. Hasta luego for now.

Dont pass up this little piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

When you look at the pictures you may question yourself , what a kitchen , living room and dining room outside ....well to me it made all sense , why not every morning you enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful Costa Rican landscape and the singing of the birds while having your coffee on a 77 degree morning as it is almost everyday , in the evening cook you dinner on the BBQ with gas burners without heating up the house , Then after dinner enjoy the pool , gardens or the game room...If you question about bugs , Well the days and nights we spent here we did not even use bug spray , there was no need ......others reviews have also posted you needed a 4x4 vehicle...not so, yes it is a hard road in some places and they were paving some of it as we were here , just take it slow and you will be fine.....Just watch out at the end of your stay here , you may find yourself leaving some tears behind for having to leave a wonderful place..................Thank You , Judah for letting , I and my family enjoy your charming wonderful casa , I hope you will have so back.

Owner's Response: Hi Ron, It was our pleasure to host you and your family. Hoping all is well back on the East Coast. And be sure to visit us again when the spirit moves you or the cold weather in the Northeast :-) Again, so glad you had a good time and enjoyed all the beauty of the property and surrounding area. We are also glad to share that the road to The Springs Resort is smoothly paved with asphault. So, fully agreed with your comment on the roads here. Glad you could smile, laugh and even shed a tear here. It is a sanctuary for you and your family and a biodiversity of birds :-) whenever you like. Best regards, Judah & The Villa Hermosa Staff

Charming, well-maintained oasis!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Villa Hermosa, as the property is convenient to La Fortuna and the Arenal attractions, yet maintains a private and exclusive environment. The evening hours are quiet here, and we very much enjoyed being able to prepare our own meals in the functional and clean kitchen area.

The pool and grounds all have a meditative feel, and the abundance of birds only adds to that charm. It was great to be able to walk along the paths at this property and enjoy the peaceful sights and sounds.

During the day (or evenings!), a trip to any of the numerous and close hot springs is a 'must' experience for anyone visiting the area. The owners happily assisted us in recommending a few to try.

It is with pleasure that we recommend this accurately described property to families, small groups, and anyone who appreciates a uniquely charming lodging option.

A wonderful rural property to relax in

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our two teenage boys and really enjoyed the rural setting and natural beauty. Lots of birds, frogs and insects around the 1 acre beautiful garden. Our boys had their own place in the Toucan Villa which they really liked. Judah and Michele were very friendly and helpful with everything. Just understand this is a rural property and is about 20 minutes from the main highway.

Owner's Response: Hi Will, Hoping all is well back in California with you and your family. It was a our pleasure to host you all and glad that the young guys had a good time with the game room and internet while the parents had a chance to take in all the sights & sounds of the wildlife here in the manicured jungle. Thanks for mentioning that we our rural. That is good for folks to know. AND, we are happy to add that most of our road (the same road as The Springs Resort & Spa) is now fully paved which allows for a 12 minute ride total from our property to the Fortuna highway. Would be a pleasure to host you all again, anytime. Best regards, Judah, Michele & The Villa Hermosa Staff

Beautiful Tropical Property!

  • 5 of 5

We just got home from an amazing trip to Costa Rica and Villa Hermosa! My husband and I stayed in the main house while our two daughters aged 18 and 22 stayed in the villa. The property is even better than the pictures as having the open air living space is amazing! The girls loved having a place to themselves back in the "jungle" and listening to all the birds and frogs. The property is amazingly kept. Every night right before we went to bed, the four of us would go searching the grounds for the red eyed tree frogs in the frog pond and watching leaf cutter ants do their thing. So cool to watch them work!

Judah and Michelle are incredible hosts! Before we arrived, Judah wanted to know our interests and what we would like to do while staying there. With one very adventurous daughter and one cautious daughter Judah was able to suggest activities that everyone could enjoy. Here are some highlights: Hanging bridges with a guide, Ziplining, The Springs Resort and Spa, hike to the La Fortuna waterfall, white water rafting and the girls favorite a night hike through the jungle. All of these activities are no more than 30-45 mintues from the guesthouse. When we would get back, Judah and Michelle would come by to see how our day was. We loved talking to both of them and then we would plan our next day. It was so helpful to have Judah book everything for us because we didn't have to worry about any of it!

Judah recommended having a driver pick us up from the airport in San Jose and I'm really glad we did. The drive is two and a half hours and that was one less thing to worry about. We picked up a car from Alamo in La Fortuna and the drive in the first time is about 40 minutes. The drive in is really easy once you know how to drive on the roads! After the second time into La Fortuna we got it down to 25 minutes. The roads are crazy to drive on as they are rocks and pot holes but you get used to it. No big deal and becomes an adventure in itself trying to miss the big ones! Also on the drive you have amazing views of Arenal. It is a picture pefect volcano that I hope the locals appreciate what they have right in front of them everyday!

Almost everyone speaks English and you can use American dollars or Colons everywhere. We felt completely safe everywhere we went. Our one daughter is a runner and needed to practice everyday and so off she would go running the mountain roads for 5 to 6 miles.

Great Vacation!!

Owner's Response: Hi Mindy, Hoping all is well back in the Chicago area. We had a great time hosting you and Jeff and your daughters. Your family did a beautiful job of making time both for the outdoor adventure tours of our area as well as time to enjoy The Villa Hermosa and the diversity of birds, frogs and other diverse wildlife on the property. Good news: the road to The Springs Resort (our road) was just paved with smooth black asphalt which makes the ride to Fortuna highway only 12 minutes total from the villa! Thought you would be excited to know, as much as we all might miss our old adventurous road :-) Glad that we are in touch via Facebook and so glad that you had a thrilling and invigorating experience. Best, Judah & Michele, The Villa Hermosa

Private spacious tropical retreat

  • 4 of 5

We loved our experience at Villa Hermosa. The indoor-outdoor living space gave it a true tropical flare and the pool and gardens were lovely; the best part was it was all to ourselves. The kitchen amenities worked out great to give us flexibility in cooking simple breakfasts to get an early start on activities or just break up the monotony of always going out to eat.

The property was just as described, decorated tastefully, and very clean and well appointed. Michelle and Judah were wonderful hosts and having them as American Ex-pats gave us that level of comfort in navigating a new country. They were always there when we needed them and helped out with places to go, places to eat, etc. We were glad Judah recommended The Springs Resort since it is so fabulous and close to their place. The whole set up here is particularly great for families, even though our kids are now grown and did not come with us. We enjoyed taking a nap and having a beautiful place to relax in between activities with our food right in the refrigerator.

The only minor drawback is the access road is not paved but it is fairly average for Costa Rican standards and we would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends and family.

Owner's Response: Hi Bill, It was a real pleasure to host you and Carleen over the summer. We are proud to announce that the road to The Springs Resort (our road) is newly paved with smooth asphalt which makes the ride from our place to the Fortuna road just 12 minutes total. We really enjoyed hosting you both and hearing about your wonderful experiences here; from your daily outdoor adventures (Arenal Volcano hike, waterfall rappelling etc.) to your quiet/meditative/reflective walks on the property, meaningful moments of connection with each other and quality reading time for a good book or two. We will continue to be in touch on facebook. Best, Judah & Michele, The Villa Hermosa
