Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 2 nights

Overview

About the property

Both Villas: 2 separate living spaces, 2 bedrooms, 3 bath, sleeps 7

We are located off the main highway that runs from La Fortuna to the Arenal Volcano. You will have the private guesthouse, pool & patio all to yourself on one acre in the scenic countryside.

The owners are on-site if you need anything at all to make your stay here in Costa Rica as wonderful as possible.

The Villa Hermosa is located far enough for privacy & but close-enough to the attractions when you're ready to see the sights!

On a clear day you can see Volcano Arenal from the manicured jungle.

The pool is recently remodeled and surrounded with exotic plants that attract tropical birds.

When the banana's are ripe you will see birds of every variety.

Our area is considered 'the adventure capital' of Costa Rica. So most outdoor adventure activities and sports (including most water sports) can be found here.

For couples: Whether you just got married, are celebrating a special occasion or are just looking for some privacy, this is the perfect place for you!

You get all of the benefits of having a private guesthouse but have the owners close by if you need anything at all. We realize everybody is different so we ask you (upon check-in) what you want from us so we can make sure you get it; if you don't want to see us for the entire visit, we'll make ourselves scarce. If you enjoy having another couple around to chat with, we'll be here...whatever style works for you we'll make sure your stay is outstanding!

For families: If you are looking for a place that it is safe for your kids to run around without worrying about them than The Villa Hermosa will be a good fit for you.

We are a private property with a gated entrance and a fully-enclosed 1+ acre property. We have native plants, trees, flowers, birds, butterflies, frogs and lots of wildlife so your kids will have plenty to see.

We have a view of the volcano from our backyard (on a clear day) and there is no need to share the space with other families (i.e., like at large hotels).

We have many games on-site that are good for both adults and children, including: shooting pool or darts and throwing horseshoes.

About our area: We are 20 minutes from the main road that runs from downtown La Fortuna up to the National Volcano Park & Lake Arenal.

We are located in a pastoral area just outside of city where you come home to relax after a good day hike or a waterfall rappelling tour.

We at The Villa Hermosa offer a rich experience that is the ideal alternative to a hotel.

About Judah Ritterman

We are Northern California natives. And we can't get enough of the Costa Rican rainforest. The beauty and diversity of life here is staggering. We drink spring water and breathe country air. We look across the valley and see magical sunsets.

Each day is an adventure, surrounded by outdoor adventure acitivites from hiking to kayaking to tubing.

Judah Ritterman purchased this villa in 2009

Why Judah Ritterman chose Alajuela Province

Our area and property are unique in that the temperature is always perfect and we don't get many mosquitoes. This is a rare combination in Costa Rica.

Moreover, everything blooms, blossoms and grows here. So we have a re-forrested property with tropical plants that draw a diversity of butterflies, birds and frogs.

We also recently remodeled the pool for your enjoyment.

The more I travel around Costa Rica the more we come to appreciate the Fortuna/Arenal area.

What makes this villa unique

This is in a quiet neighborhood just 5 minutes from a true 'Tico' town...what La Fortuna center was probably like about 20 years ago.

We are still lucky to have a slice of the real Costa Rica, bumpy road and all.

With regards to The Springs Resort & Spa, we are the closest, most affordable and most private guesthouse option in the area.

The Springs Resort & Spa has everything you can think of: hot springs of every variety, a wildlife rescue, kayaking, tubing, rock climbing, 3 restaurants, a video game room...you name it...Pura Vida indeed!

Guestbook comments from the manager

The Villa Hermosa guesthouse is a relaxing and well appointed retreat near La Fortuna. My family and I stayed at the guesthouse for 5 nights in early august. The accommodations were perfect for my family of four. We spent our days exploring all that La Fortuna/Arenal has to offer and then we would return to the guesthouse for fun and relaxing afternoons and evenings. We enjoyed swimming in the pool and some fierce games of horseshoes, darts, and pool. Wendy served delicious breakfasts and booked our activities. We especially liked Danny Vega, the guide she reserved for our Hanging Bridges tour. The Villa Hermosa gardens are lovely and the outdoor living space is really inviting. The ten minute drive from the main road offers some truly spectacular views of the volcano on one side and the gorgeous valley on the other side. We loved our stay at Villa Hermosa guesthouse!

Charming, well-maintained oasis!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Villa Hermosa, as the property is convenient to La Fortuna and the Arenal attractions, yet maintains a private and exclusive environment. The evening hours are quiet here, and we very much enjoyed being able to prepare our own meals in the functional and clean kitchen area.

The pool and grounds all have a meditative feel, and the abundance of birds only adds to that charm. It was great to be able to walk along the paths at this property and enjoy the peaceful sights and sounds.

During the day (or evenings!), a trip to any of the numerous and close hot springs is a 'must' experience for anyone visiting the area. The owners happily assisted us in recommending a few to try.

It is with pleasure that we recommend this accurately described property to families, small groups, and anyone who appreciates a uniquely charming lodging option.

A wonderful rural property to relax in

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our two teenage boys and really enjoyed the rural setting and natural beauty. Lots of birds, frogs and insects around the 1 acre beautiful garden. Our boys had their own place in the Toucan Villa which they really liked. Judah and Michele were very friendly and helpful with everything. Just understand this is a rural property and is about 20 minutes from the main highway.

Beautiful Tropical Property!

  • 5 of 5

We just got home from an amazing trip to Costa Rica and Villa Hermosa! My husband and I stayed in the main house while our two daughters aged 18 and 22 stayed in the villa. The property is even better than the pictures as having the open air living space is amazing! The girls loved having a place to themselves back in the "jungle" and listening to all the birds and frogs. The property is amazingly kept. Every night right before we went to bed, the four of us would go searching the grounds for the red eyed tree frogs in the frog pond and watching leaf cutter ants do their thing. So cool to watch them work!

Judah and Michelle are incredible hosts! Before we arrived, Judah wanted to know our interests and what we would like to do while staying there. With one very adventurous daughter and one cautious daughter Judah was able to suggest activities that everyone could enjoy. Here are some highlights: Hanging bridges with a guide, Ziplining, The Springs Resort and Spa, hike to the La Fortuna waterfall, white water rafting and the girls favorite a night hike through the jungle. All of these activities are no more than 30-45 mintues from the guesthouse. When we would get back, Judah and Michelle would come by to see how our day was. We loved talking to both of them and then we would plan our next day. It was so helpful to have Judah book everything for us because we didn't have to worry about any of it!

Judah recommended having a driver pick us up from the airport in San Jose and I'm really glad we did. The drive is two and a half hours and that was one less thing to worry about. We picked up a car from Alamo in La Fortuna and the drive in the first time is about 40 minutes. The drive in is really easy once you know how to drive on the roads! After the second time into La Fortuna we got it down to 25 minutes. The roads are crazy to drive on as they are rocks and pot holes but you get used to it. No big deal and becomes an adventure in itself trying to miss the big ones! Also on the drive you have amazing views of Arenal. It is a picture pefect volcano that I hope the locals appreciate what they have right in front of them everyday!

Almost everyone speaks English and you can use American dollars or Colons everywhere. We felt completely safe everywhere we went. Our one daughter is a runner and needed to practice everyday and so off she would go running the mountain roads for 5 to 6 miles.

Great Vacation!!

Private spacious tropical retreat

  • 4 of 5

We loved our experience at Villa Hermosa. The indoor-outdoor living space gave it a true tropical flare and the pool and gardens were lovely; the best part was it was all to ourselves. The kitchen amenities worked out great to give us flexibility in cooking simple breakfasts to get an early start on activities or just break up the monotony of always going out to eat.

The property was just as described, decorated tastefully, and very clean and well appointed. Michelle and Judah were wonderful hosts and having them as American Ex-pats gave us that level of comfort in navigating a new country. They were always there when we needed them and helped out with places to go, places to eat, etc. We were glad Judah recommended The Springs Resort since it is so fabulous and close to their place. The whole set up here is particularly great for families, even though our kids are now grown and did not come with us. We enjoyed taking a nap and having a beautiful place to relax in between activities with our food right in the refrigerator.

The only minor drawback is the access road is not paved but it is fairly average for Costa Rican standards and we would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends and family.

So Unique!!!

  • 5 of 5

We love our stay at Villa Hermosa! The property was gorgeous and well-cared for. The maid and caretaker kept the property looking clean and beautiful. My husband and I (and 4 kids) rented the guest house and toucan house. We loved the pool and exploring the beautiful property. The kids had fun looking for frogs and other wildlife. La Fortuna is about 15 minutes away, but we especially loved the little town of Monterey which is very close to the property. Be sure to stop by Kike's market (2 minutes away) for food and supplies. Having an SUV is helpful if you choose to stay at Villa Hermosa. We were able to visit the hanging bridges and ziplines near Arenal volcano (Sky Adventures). We also went white water rafting on Rio Balsa (Wave Expeditions). We especially loved our horse back riding tour at Leaves and Lizards very nearby. After we finished our daily adventures, we loved coming home to Villa Hermosa to cool off in the pool. My son calls it "the house with no walls" and we enjoyed having the living and kitchen areas open to nature. At night, the enclosed, air-conditioned bedroom made for a peaceful night's sleep. Judah and Michelle were amazing hosts and really care that you have a wonderful stay. We were honored to be their first guests as the new owners at Villa Hermosa.

Owner's Response: Hi Nathan & Laurel and family, It was our pleasure to host you here at Villa Hermosa. It was so special and memorable having your wonderful family as our first guests, as the new owners. We enjoyed every moment of hosting you, getting to know you and watching you explore and adventure in this amazing area. It was wonderful to watch you all take full advantage, both of Villa Hermosa, including the swimming pool, and the outdoor adventure tours (white water rafting, ziplining, hanging bridges etc.). We would love to host you and any of your family and friends again in the near future. Best regards, Judah & Michele

We are located 7 km off the main road that runs from downtown La Fortuna to the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

The activities here are endless but some of the most popular include: ziplining, white water rafting, hiking at Volcano Arenal National Park, canyoning/waterfall rappelling (only in Costa Rica), canopy tours, hot springs (some of the world's finest), horseback riding, animal watching, bird watching, fishing, kayaking, tubing, wind surfing, ATV/Quad tours, spas, mountain biking...and the list goes on.

We are on the way to Rio Celeste, the Maleku Indians & the Venado Caves (closer than staying in La Fortuna/town).

We just finished a gorgeous pool re-model in May 2017 for your enjoyment.
