Quaint vacation rental for the true vacationer

  • 4 of 5

We just returned from a week in St. Maarten. I hope I get to post photos here so anyone reading this can see them. 3 bedrooms, air conditioning in each one. The bedroom facing the pool is where we slept and the hurricane shutters made the room so dark. Perfect for sleeping in. :) The house is fully equipped with 2 refrigerators, a washer/dryer, regular coffee pot and a Nespresso machine, toaster, oven, microwave and more dishes and pots and pans than you'll ever use. There are about 15 steps down to the house, so if you have an issue with that, just know this beforehand. We met Filippe at the pharmacy at the top of the hill. He guides you right to the house. It is tucked away, so arriving in the daytime is a BONUS so you can get your bearings as to where you are. The pool is lovely. The little beach is just that, little. If you're looking for long walks on the beach, this isn't the place for you. I fed fish off the little dock. Some big (like tarpon big) and some little needle-nose fish. There are jelly fish in the area, also, so AQUA SOCKS are a great idea. It is rocky right off the beach, so I was happy I had them. We had 2 kayaks and a paddle board at our disposal. We took the kayaks out every day and went to Pinel Island for lunch and snorkeling one day. The snorkeling was 12 euro/13 USD, but the snorkeling was -- to be honest -- average at best. We've been to Turks & Caicos the last 3 years, and the snorkeling there beats this hands down. That being said, I still think you should do it. Everyone is friendly and helpful. You're on the French side, but everyone seems to speak English anyway. You'll see lots of iguanas and hermit crabs on the island too. The TV has 3 American channels, BBC, CNN and MSNBC, so we stayed current on the news at night :). Cocci Market is right up the road. BRING YOUR OWN BAGS if you plan on getting a lot of things for the week. There is another market down the main road that has more variety of wine and beer if you're looking for libations. Prices were all reasonable.

Restaurants: We arrived on Sunday and not much is open on Sundays -- keep that in mind. We went to Rancho Del Sol in Orient Bay. Tex-Mex, pizza, seafood, pasta. Happy hour from 4-7, which was a nice surprise, so 2-for-1 drinks. Jam Rox and Grain de Poivre were lovely and had wonderful fish dinners. Our favorite was Pancho Villa. Mexican food that's fresh and the owner, Joliee, is a delight. GO VISIT HER.

Beautiful property in a quiet area!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our stay at this beautiful Villa. Waking up every morning to these views was what we needed. Kayaked every day with the sea turtles swimming around us. The local restaurants were fantastic and the owners so friendly and the food outstanding. Pinel Island was also a treat and we kayaked there several times. While we did drive around the Island and enjoyed many of the sites, our favorite spot was right at the Villa.

An Oasis in Paradise !!!!

  • 5 of 5

We love this place! We had ample room to relax, cook and enjoy ourselves. The swimming pool was the best, right next to the view of the ocean and beach.

The beach next to the house may not be the best in town but it is definitely NOT a turn off. We ventured out every day and the one day we stayed home we used the Kayaks. You can go to the sand beds about 200 feet from shore in the Kayaks and it is a very nice place to hang out and snorkel.

This is St. Martin people, and it is Tropical weather which means rain and sometimes torrential rain and winds. Yes things get wet, everything and everybody gets wet. We actually loved the rain so much we simply stayed out when it rain.

If you are not good at finding places, especially in foreign countries, make sure you bring a smartphone…Google Maps FTW! I was able to get in touch with Philippe via Text, He send me the address of a nearby pharmacy, Google Maps did the rest. Seriously I have been to other countries (Italy) and got around using Google Maps too. As long as you have signal you are OK. But even without Technology you can get a Map at the Car Rental place for Free and you can still get around the Island the old fashion way.

The big win here is Philippe. The man is a savior. I locked the keys in our rented van…running! I texted him and he was at the house in less than 10 minutes ready to help. Although I ended up calling the Rental place and they came over with a set of keys to open the door, I give Phillippe a lot of credit for his sincere attitude to help. He is a great guy!

I called this House our Oasis in Paradise. It was such a great feeling to get to an Air Conditioned home after a long day out to relax by the Pool. I am planning on coming back to St. Martin next year. I will be checking with Jerome then. I recommend his place to anyone wanting to visit St. Martin.

Happy Vacationing!

Property is as lovely as the pictures!

Spacious living/dining area. Kitchen had all amenities (2 refrigerators, dishwasher, stacks of dinnerware, et al) Ample parking. Convenient location. Gated community. Stunning view while you're enjoying the ocean view or dining outside next to the pool. Definitely a home one would want to repeatedly return to. (Thanks to Philippe for ensuring our stay was perfect!)

Beautiful Spot!

  • 4 of 5

This is a great choice if you're looking to avoid the noise and crowds of hotels/condos. The house is exactly as you see it. Very comfortable for our two families (4 adults and 3 teens). One bedroom has bunk beds plus two twin beds, so it was perfect for the "kids". It has everything you need.

The deck and pool area are great! Plenty of room to lounge around and a nice, clean pool. The landscaping and lights make it gorgeous day and night.

The only reason I didn't give the 5th star was the beach. It is a small sandy area that was mostly covered in seaweed. This is a sheltered bay and the seaweed comes in every night. Someone had raked up quite a bit of it, but there really isn't anywhere to put it, so it was left in three large piles on the sand, leaving no room to actually use the beach. The water in the bay is very shallow and many boats are moored there, so you really don't want to swim in the bay. I doubt there is anything that can be done about it -- but be aware that you aren't going to swim right in front of the house. On googlemaps the larger beach where the ferry is located looks like a swimming beach. It isn't. Again, it's a place to access the ferry, kayak rentals and moored boats.

What makes up for the lack of beach is the proximity to Pinel Island. You can take the ferry - or better yet - kayak to Pinel Island. This is a beautiful beach with two small restaurants that open during the day. You can also hike around the island and check out the less crowded beaches on the other side. The snorkeling here is supposed to be fantastic, but while we were there the surf had churned up the water, so it wasn't stellar. But, we did meet a couple of sea turtles on our way over, so that was a treat!

The caretaker Phillipe is a super nice guy and will make sure you have what you need. He may ask you to meet him at the pharmacy....don't be worried. The pharmacy is easy to find as it is the only one on the main road and it is near the turn to enter the gated community. It will make sense to you when you arrive. Owner Jerome was very responsive and easy to work with.

Wonderful Italian, Mexican, and French restaurants within walking distance. Easy drive to Orient Beach and Grand Case. Cool floating restaurant in bay. Everything you need for an amazing vacation. I definitely recommend this place!! Contact Jerome and make plans for an amazing vacation on St. Martin!!

Nice Property

  • 4 of 5

My husband and another couple stayed for 10 days in February at Villa Horizon. The house was as pictured, it was clean, the beds were comfortable, the whole house is air conditioned ,( if you choose to run the air). The pool was great on the really hot days, nice and clean. We only used the air in the bedrooms at night as there was a nice breeze all day into the evening. The kitchen was well appointed with most everything that you would need to prepare a meal; which we did almost every night. The view was good, seeing the boats and people come and go from Pinel Island was entertaining. We were hoping for better snorkeling right from the house but there was none. Pinel Island was disappointing as far as the snorkeling goes, I felt it was more of a beach to just hang out and get a drink and something to eat. The Villa is located in a nice gated area and you are close to restaurants and grocery stores. Grand Case was also close, nice area and great food. Overall we rated the house at "good". We have rented many houses over the years and the only reasons why I didn't give the house an "excellent" is for the following: We used the charcoal grill for two meals but there were no grilling utensils. No utensils makes for a grilling challenge. We had to run out the 2nd day we were there to buy toilet paper and garbage bags, two items that have been provided at other houses that we have rented. It would have been nice to have actual written directions from the airport to the house, we arrived during the day and it was still a challenge to find the villa, but we did. Lastly for those of us that do not speak or read French; all appliances as well the t.v. were in french only; it would be nice to have a "cheat sheet" in English on how to operate each appliance. Thank goodness for the internet we were able to figure out how to run the oven. I also realize that we are on vacation and we are not going to be sitting in front of the television all day but at night when we sit down to relax after a day at the beach it would have been nice to watch a program or two in English. In the "amenities" section of the house listing on VRBO it should be stated that the television is in French channels only. We were there during the super bowl and being football fans we had to find a place to watch it, which we did. Great vacation, great island, great house, just needs a few additional items.
