Vinalhaven is the largest year round inhabited island in Maine. It is also home to the largest lobster fishing fleet in the world. Boasting a population of about 1200, it swells to over three times that in the summer, when visitors flock to this gorgeous getaway to delight in "getting away from it all" - Vinalhaven offers relaxation, a sense of going back in time, and has a real small-town charm.. However, it also also provides many modern ammenities, including wifi and coffee shops, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants. Learn about the granite industry on the island at the Historical Society, rent a kayak from the Tidewater and explore the Basin, visit the Land Trust and marvel at the gorgeous protected trail systems all over the island, take a 15 minute walk to Lane's Island, people watch at the (R) Cafe, sip a signature cocktail at SALT Restaurant, hunt for sea glass, take a brisk jump in one of the swimming quarries - the list goes on. Or, simply just sit in your private yard and watch the waves just steps from the door of your cottage and get away from it all.
