When we began looking for a quiet getaway in the mountains of Western North Carolina, we came upon the sweet community of The Hidden McMillan Valley. We felt like we had stepped back in time with kind people and quiet, relaxed living. You will start with a scenic drive through the apple country of Edneyville and Hendersonville, drive up the mountain with views, then wind down to The Hidden McMillan Valley. 'Solitude' is nestled between two streams and has a country chapel across the way. In the summer months, it offers Sunday morning services and sometimes potluck lunches.
The screened-in porch runs the length of the house and is complete with wicker chairs, rockers, a love seat and hammock. It also has a wrought iron table and chairs for outdoor dining. As you sit out, you will hear the birds, nature, and the rushing of the water. If it is cool, or just for ambiance, you can build yourself a nice fire in the large brick fireplace. The wood is already chopped and stacked on the porch for you.
One of the perks of where we are located is that you can get to so many places in such a short time. We are a little over an hour from Spartanburg, SC. and about 2 hours from Charlotte. We are 20 minutes from downtown Hendersonville with its unique shops and restaurants. We are only 20 minutes from Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. We are also 35-40 minutes from Asheville with all its historical and cultural influence. Close by is the Blue Ridge Parkway, waterfalls and hiking, the Flat Rock Playhouse, Brevard Music Center, Pisgah National Forest, Carl Sandburg's home, The Biltmore House, and the Grove Park Inn to name a few. So, you can find plenty to do or just enjoy the solitude!
Bob and Terri Allsbrook, owners since 2008. We both grew up in N.C, went to college in the mountains of N.C, but had been living in S.C. for 22 years. We wanted a place to retreat to back in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains...'Solitude' was our answer to that dream.
Terri G Allsbrook purchased this house in 2008
This photo is taken at 'The Edge of the World', which is one of the prettiest panoramic views of the mountains you will ever see! It is only a few minutes drive and then a short hike to get there from Solitude.

We had such a good time. Hope you found everything ok. Loved the little church across from us. Felt humbled thinking about how humble this little community had to be. Went over to the church Sunday morning. Such a blessing. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us. The cabin was everything you said it was. Easy to find. Loved sitting on the porch reading. So peaceful. Took a short walk on the road behind the church and saw some bear tracks. That was exciting. God Bless and look forward to visiting again

My daughter planned this trip to Solitude for my 75th birthday celebration. I couldn't ask for a better place to make my birthday great and extend my celebration through all the days we were there. The owners of Solitude recommended things to do in the area and we went to all of these places. This added to the fun that we were having. The quiet evenings listening to nature were really the perfect ending to each of our perfect days. I would highly recommend this wonderful place for the perfect getaway.
This was my second time starting here. Solitude maximizes the relaxation. Peaceful and quite location that allowed us to unwind. Firepit outback provides snores making and hot dog roasting over an open fire. Everything needed for the perfect vacation is available here.
The location is quiet and calm. Great house with ample amenities. Loved the screened front porch. Kids and adults enjoyed the stay. Right in the middle of Hendersonville and Chimney Rock/Lake Lure. Nice comfy beds - I usually don't sleep well away from home but I slept like a baby here. We enjoyed the area and the house. Owners are super easy to work with. Thanks for a great mini vacation.
Solitude was the perfect cabin for our trip. There was 6 of us ranging from 11-75. We had a great time in this beautiful cozy cabin. Everything was perfect when we arrived, very clean, neat and comfy beds! The owners are wonderful to deal with!!! They are very friendly and accommodating. The girls loved playing in the creek and walking around the Valley. We did see a few neighbors who were very welcoming and offered assistance if needed. (We were perfectly fine and didn't need to bother them). The cool nights on the porch were great for playing cards with the family. There is a TV which worked great to catch a few of the Olympic Games but for the most part we loved listening to the sounds of nature and the creek. We spent Monday at Burntshirt Vineyards which I highly recommend beautiful and very friendly staff! Downtown Hendersonville has great lunch spots away from your typical chain restaurants as well as great places to shop. We love the location of the cabin close to Chimney Rock too where my family liked panning for gems. We cannot wait to start planning our next trip down. Highly recommend for all families who want a great getaway.
We had a wonderful weekend here! The house was very neat, cozy, and clean. It was a little cold when we first got there but after starting a fire and getting the heaters going it warmed right up! We had a 3 couples staying and had plenty of room for everyone. We loved the fireplace, grilling out, the sound of the creek from the porch, and playing board games in the loving room. Also, we went snow tubing at Moonshine Mountain about 30 minutes away and had a blast. We found a great Mexican place called Tequilas in Hendersonville that was great! We got up early and drove to "The Edge of the World" that was suggested and watched the sunrise! It was breathtaking! On our way back we saw another snow tubing place right near the cabin called Black Bear Snow Tubing. www.blackbearsnowtubing.com/worldpeess1/
We will definitely try this place out next year! We also went to Dupont State Forest Park about 45 minutes from the house. We hiked to 3 different waterfalls and a covered bridge. It was beautiful but definitely a HIKE! The owners were very helpful and nice. We will surely stay again soon.
Note.... the roads are very winding to the cabin so drive slowly.
