When we began looking for a quiet getaway in the mountains of Western North Carolina, we came upon the sweet community of The Hidden McMillan Valley. We felt like we had stepped back in time with kind people and quiet, relaxed living. You will start with a scenic drive through the apple country of Edneyville and Hendersonville, drive up the mountain with views, then wind down to The Hidden McMillan Valley. 'Solitude' is nestled between two streams and has a country chapel across the way. In the summer months, it offers Sunday morning services and sometimes potluck lunches.
The screened-in porch runs the length of the house and is complete with wicker chairs, rockers, a love seat and hammock. It also has a wrought iron table and chairs for outdoor dining. As you sit out, you will hear the birds, nature, and the rushing of the water. If it is cool, or just for ambiance, you can build yourself a nice fire in the large brick fireplace. The wood is already chopped and stacked on the porch for you.
One of the perks of where we are located is that you can get to so many places in such a short time. We are a little over an hour from Spartanburg, SC. and about 2 hours from Charlotte. We are 20 minutes from downtown Hendersonville with its unique shops and restaurants. We are only 20 minutes from Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. We are also 35-40 minutes from Asheville with all its historical and cultural influence. Close by is the Blue Ridge Parkway, waterfalls and hiking, the Flat Rock Playhouse, Brevard Music Center, Pisgah National Forest, Carl Sandburg's home, The Biltmore House, and the Grove Park Inn to name a few. So, you can find plenty to do or just enjoy the solitude!
Bob and Terri Allsbrook, owners since 2008. We both grew up in N.C, went to college in the mountains of N.C, but had been living in S.C. for 22 years. We wanted a place to retreat to back in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains...'Solitude' was our answer to that dream.
Terri G Allsbrook purchased this house in 2008
This photo is taken at 'The Edge of the World', which is one of the prettiest panoramic views of the mountains you will ever see! It is only a few minutes drive and then a short hike to get there from Solitude.
We had a wonderful weekend here! The house was very neat, cozy, and clean. It was a little cold when we first got there but after starting a fire and getting the heaters going it warmed right up! We had a 3 couples staying and had plenty of room for everyone. We loved the fireplace, grilling out, the sound of the creek from the porch, and playing board games in the loving room. Also, we went snow tubing at Moonshine Mountain about 30 minutes away and had a blast. We found a great Mexican place called Tequilas in Hendersonville that was great! We got up early and drove to "The Edge of the World" that was suggested and watched the sunrise! It was breathtaking! On our way back we saw another snow tubing place right near the cabin called Black Bear Snow Tubing. www.blackbearsnowtubing.com/worldpeess1/
We will definitely try this place out next year! We also went to Dupont State Forest Park about 45 minutes from the house. We hiked to 3 different waterfalls and a covered bridge. It was beautiful but definitely a HIKE! The owners were very helpful and nice. We will surely stay again soon.
Note.... the roads are very winding to the cabin so drive slowly.
We had a fabulous time. Cabin meant all expectations, and was super clean. We had a great time, but didn't do a whole lot. Great dinner in town, and then a relaxing night by a bonfire sipping on wine. Definitely hope to return soon
We really had an amazing weekend! There was a beautiful dusting of snow - just enough to enjoy! And with the cold weather and our desire to rest/relax, we took full advantage of the 'solitude' and never left the cabin! Except for a walk in the neighborhood, we stayed put and enjoyed the fireplace, some reading, a few games of Rummikub, and Netflix. Thanks again for sharing your cabin with us. It was definitely "just what the doctor ordered!"
A perfect place for our family during the Christmas holiday. We enjoyed outings to the Grove Park Inn to view the Gingerbread houses and Christmas trees and spent time at the winery on the Biltmore Estate. Evenings spent on the front porch were so relaxing.
This is the second time that I have stayed at Solitude. I have enjoyed both times. The house is nice and clean. The beds are comfortable. Netflix was a plus. The area was very peaceful. I will definitely be back. The owners are so nice and accommodating with the dates.

We had so much fun, ended up just my husband and the kids. The house is lovely and we can't wait to go back! Sky top orchard was great and found a nice little cafe close by the staff was super! Just riding around was fun. It was great having such quiet but yet being so close to everything we needed. Thank you so much for opening your home!
