About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.25 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

We invite you to enjoy our beautiful mountain home for a relaxing vacation in the winter or summer in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. With wifi and cable TV you can stay in touch with the world while enjoying the seclusion of this nature lovers paradise. Our home's incredible views take your breath away every morning when you wake up and look across the sparkling water. Sit and watch nature's activity on the lake for hours on end. The islands in the lake provide a back drop for a dramatic nature show where Osprey nest and white pelicans perch. Deer, Elk and Moose are often spotted from the deck. Shadow Mountain rises up out of the water on the far shore giving this beautiful mountain lake its name, 'Shadow Mountain Lake.'

In the winter, you can snowshoe, ice skate or snowmobile on the frozen lake right out the back door. Spend hours of fun snowmobiling through town or on the 100+ miles of trails around the Grand Lake area. Grand Lake Village is the snow mobile capital of Colorado! Only 20 minutes from the Sol Vista skiing area and 40 minutes from the world famous (and local's favorite) Winter Park and Mary Jane ski areas, this is a beautiful and quiet winter getaway.

Our home is located where the headwaters of the Colorado River enter the lake, creating an estuary-like waterfront on your doorstep. In the lake there is fishing for trout and Kokanee Salmon. This lake is connected at its other end to Grand Lake via a navigable waterway and visits to Grand Lake Village are a must, whether by boat or by automobile. This quaint mountain town has a special charm, choosing covered boardwalks rather than cement sidewalks. Fun mountain town activities like Saturday night bingo in the park, browsing curio shops, playing miniature golf or experiencing the yummy candy and ice cream stores. You can also enjoy the authentic mountain night life by taking in a play at the live theater, bowling, or drinking and dancing in the rustic saloons and many different restaurants.

Right out the door from the lower level of the house you can use our complimentary canoe and paddle on the lake around the islands for sight seeing and fishing. We really love our mountain home and we would like to share it with you. It is a place that you will never forget.

About The Owner

Brent and Lori are avid travelers and have been renting through VRBO for many years in places all over the world, from Hawaii to Costa Rica (the picture), Mexico to Germany and Italy and most recently Africa. We know what is important to us when we travel and we like to share that same experience with the people who rent our vacation home in Colorado.

The Owner purchased this house in 2010

Why The Owner chose Grand Lake

We have been visiting this area since we were children. Lori's parents met here. We are natives of Colorado and we plan to retire in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. This vacation home is a step in that direction.

What makes this house unique

Seeing animals in the wild, hiking, biking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skiing in the Rockies and visiting Rocky Mountain National Park are just the beginning of what we love here. The quiet and solitude that this area evokes are just right for recharging our batteries for our lives in town and while traveling. Sitting on the deck and watching the lake as it takes on its never ending array of reflections, contrasts and moods is pure joy.

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at this spacious house. We needed to get away from the noise and just relax a bit. The views from the deck were amazing of the lake and mountains. We saw lots of wildlife including two moose that came right up to house! We rented a boat at Trail Ridge Marina which is very close to the house and which provided excellent service. We hiked Adam Falls which was perfect to do with 3 small children. We would definitely go back and stay in this exact same house as it provided us with everything we needed and more.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your nice review! We love the moose in our area and it is always so exciting to see them. :) We are also really glad to hear that Trail Ridge Marina is still providing great service with it's rental boats. It is quite fun to play on the lake! Please come back and stay with us again.

Amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing views from this comfortable home! We enjoyed our family time in this peaceful setting. Bathrooms, kitchen and bedrooms super clean. They have everything you could possibly need. We did use the canoe, but know ahead of time that it is a little tricky with the low water in the estuary part of the lake. Close to the town of Grand Lake with dining and shopping. Close to great hiking trails. Overall, it was a great value.

Amazing views. Great house. Great location.

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here was very comfortable. The house is very clean and well kept. It had all the basic necessities you would need. Sitting on the top deck with a cup of coffee and looking at the view made it the relaxing vacation we needed. We hiked and canoed every day. There is a small Island right near the property that is surrounded by all sorts of birds and wild life. While we were there there was a Moose with her baby and an Elk with her baby that visited the island often. They would walk through the shallow waters to go to the island. Twice they walked right in front of the house, just 10 feet from shore. Amazing. I would rent here again!!!!

Quiet Retreat on the Lake, With Lots of Wildlife Visible from the Balcony

  • 4 of 5

Great retreat with amazing view of the lake and mountains. Plenty of room for our family of 6 to enjoy. Moose lovers will particularly be fond of the decor throughout the house

Saw moose, deer, otters, and the many pelicans on the lake just from the balcony and lower deck.

As others have stated, the Adams Falls trail in Grand Lake was perfect for families with younger children. Then suggest stopping by Rocky Mountain Chocolates in town for some ice cream.

Unfortunately, the water levels near the house would make kayaking / canoeing rather difficult. So we instead rented a boat on Lake Granby (Beacon Landing Marina) - highly recommend

Owner's Response: Thank you for your thoughtful review. The Colorado river head waters empty into the lake in front of our house so there is a shallow river delta there. Which is why so many animals and birds congregate there. We are sorry you were unable to enjoy the canoeing/kayaking from our property. To kayak and/or canoe from the edge of our property it is necessary to closely follow the bank northward about a hundred yards until the water is deeper. So yes, playing in the canoes in front of our house makes no sense because the water is too shallow. But canoeing out to and around the the islands in shadow mountain lake is something we do regularly. On the other hand, renting a boat from any of the local marinas is a lot of fun and we also highly recommend it. We are glad you were able to enjoy Granby lake in a rental boat. That is an activity we love too!

Great location. Great house.

Wonderfully located cabin. Close enough to town but secluded enough for a peaceful lake visit. This property is the most well stocked vacation rental we have ever been to. This includes kitchen goods, spices, games, books, outdoor gear. Excellent size for two families of 4.

Beautiful views and plenty of room for our family!

  • 5 of 5

The view from the kitchen/living area was awe inspiring. Watching flocks of white pelicans gather in the mud flats and osprey soar over the lake islands was just lovely! The house was immaculately clean, the beds were comfortable, and there were life jackets in tons of sizes.

Being able to use the canoes and kayak were huge selling points for my family; we used them daily.

The fire pit was super fun for roasting marshmallows while enjoying the mountain views and the bird activity on the lake.

The arrangement of the house is excellent for having adult and kid space (2 living rooms). We loved our stay at this Shadow Mountain Lake home!!!

As other reviewers have stated I would advise spacing your showers out to ensure everyone has hot water. The hot water recovers quickly (about 15 minutes), but if it runs out while you are showering you will be chilly.

I highly recommend this property and would stay here with my family again!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very kind review. We are so happy you enjoyed sharing our little bit of paradise. Thank you also for the reminder about the shower. It is not an on-demand system but it recovers quite quickly since it is fairly high performance.
