Everything We Expected and More!

  • 5 of 5

My son had and I spent a wonderful week here. The home was wonderful, the pool was fantastic, the beach was beautiful and so close. Mike, the owner is so nice and welcomed us with a wonderful basket of tropical fruits, bottled water and cold beer! He also comes every morning very early to clean the pool, and is easily reachable by phone/email should you need anything, a real pleasure! There are cute little cafe/restaurants within walking distance, a small produce store to pick up fruit/veggies, water, soda, wine, chips, medicine, etc.. We rented a bike ($10) for the entire day, and biked all around the neighborhood and area. Also took a water taxi to the 'bigger' town Tamarindo across the estuary, as well as an estuary tour. We had a car and so drove all over, and also signed up for the One Day Adventure Combo at Hacienda Guachipeli - what a day! Zip lining (9), Tarzan Swing, horseback riding, swimming by the waterfalls, repelling and lunch! Highly recommend. My son also took surf lessons at the beach next to the house, from Frijoles Locos, the local Surf Shop - he loved it and did great! And of course, we also loved coming home to Mike's wonderful place and relaxing, having dinner outside on the patio, and of course enjoying the pool! * If you rent a car, highly advise to rent a 4x4, even a small one - many of the roads in Costa Rica are bumpy/pot holes/dirt roads, etc.

Thank you Mike! Pura Vida!

Great, private, comfortable spot

  • 4 of 5

First and foremost, Mike is great, and responds immediately. You couldn't ask for a better host. Always appeared available and attentive, but you never saw him. He surprised us with champagne, as we were on our honeymoon, and also indulged us in some local fresh fruit (the pineapple is amazing). My wife and I loved our stay. The house is great, the pool is better and it's a short walk to the beach that really had no one on it the entire time we were there. Saw a monkey in our yard (no sloths or tiger heron, booo, but not Mike's or the house's fault) and enjoyed the patio area as much as we possible could.

A couple words of advice for future guests... the traditional beds sleep like futons unless you fluff the feather beds, and you will have ants... it's the tropics, if you're not in a hotel, you should expect to have ants... get over it, they don't bite. Also, the benches in the TV area weren't the most comfortable, we fixed this by pulling the cushions off and laying them out on the ground fort-style. It made for a bit more romantic and comfortable setting with wine and a movie. Saw a previous review regarding walk to beach, it isn't that far. Maybe took us two minutes to get there.

Loved the community and restaurants. Listen to Mike's suggestions and stick with him, they all panned out as he said (we tried his bottom suggested bar/restaurant and he was right to put it there). As stated, we loved this place and can't wait to get back to Costa Rica.

Beautiful Villa-Beautiful Setting!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at Mike's Bungalow. We were on a trip with myself and my husband and another couple, and this house was perfect for such a holiday. We spent most of time by the pool, which was amazing and looks exactly like the picture at night! We felt like we had our own little secluded slice of Costa Rica. Every morning I sat on the rocking chair with my amazing coffee and a Bare Throated Tiger Heron would be wandering around the far side of the pool.

Even though there is technically no properties between this house and the beach, you still have to walk up the road a couple of houses to get to the beach entrance. Small price to pay to be literally in a Marine park, the purpose is protect the nesting ground-above the high tide mark-of the most amazing turtles in the world, the Leatherback. The sunsets on this beach are simply spectacular.

On the other side of the estates is the estuary, which is full of mangroves and crocodiles and you can go on an awesome taxi ride for a few bucks and it will drop you off at Hotel Bula Bula up the road from the house.

We actually rented bicycles up the road at the market for a few dollars, since it is a gated community we felt very safe riding all over even at night. There is a couple of bars/restaurants within the estates as well as a market. There is also surfboard lessons, as well as surfboard and boogie board rentals.

This is a world class surfing community, and one of the best beaches in Guanacaste, but it is not touristy. If you want nightclubs/nightlife etc you have to Tamarindo. You can actually see Tamarindo from the beach in front of the house, but it is separated by the estuary, which you can't swim/walk through as it has crocodiles! You can take a water taxi across for a couple of dollars, they are sitting there with boats until sunset. So if you stay late you have to take a car taxi back, which has to go around the estuary and is about a 20 minute drive.

We headed onto the Arenal region after this house, which was about a 3.5 hour drive. Guanacoste is much dryer than the inlands, so if you are looking for rainforests, toucans, volcano's etc that's where you would have to head from here. I wouldn't miss out on this part though!

All in all we loved it so much. Mike was excellent, the house had everything you could want. Wifi, all the local information, even came with some cold beer! And the beds were so comfy. I can't wait to go back!

Awesome Bungalow

  • 5 of 5

Mike's Bungalow was the perfect stay in Costa Rica. The house is in a gated community but is not touristy...if you want to see tourist shops and what not, go to the bigger city of Tamarindo. It's a short walk and a water taxi away. They have a couple lunch spots on the beach where you can watch the surfers. The Palm Beach Estates beach access is two or three houses down which was very convenient and easy to get to. The sunsets were spectacular! Every night we had a few cocktails on the beach and just watched the surf. There are several good restaurants within walking distance in the gated community. Mike's pool was simply beautiful and relaxing. The house had everything we needed, including wifi and lists of local suggestions and phone numbers. Mike's customer service was top notch throughout the entire booking process and stay! We've been bragging to our friends about this stay, and hope to come back again some day. Thanks again Mike; we had a great time!! Cheers!! --Cullen and Colleen

The good, The Bad, the ugly. An honest review.

  • 2 of 5

Let me start by saying we rented during the holiday season so we paid a VERY high rate. Maybe that is why we expected more than we got and were badly disappointed.

The pool is very nice and well maintained. The art work is lovely. There was Corona in the Fridge when we arrived. Nice touch. Mike is a pleasant person.

Beware of what isn't pictured!!! The kitchen is the worst I have ever seen. Even in my college days as a poor student I had better. It is literally about 10 square feet. We had wanted to cook a few meals there but saw immediately it was not possible. The cabinets are unbelievably old, rickety and really, really cheap as are the cooking utensils and dishes. There is no dishwasher. The dishes and utensils seemed dirty. There is no housekeeping whatsoever. Mike cleans between renters. There is no place to eat inside the house. No table at all.

The entry gate is run down, doesn't look like it's ever been painted. Dirt driveway. This is gives you a really bad vibe upon arrival, since it is surrounded by beautiful, well maintained homes.

The house itself is very, very small. We liked the Costa Rican style architecture but the beds were very uncomfortable as was the "sofa" which was the only seating in the interior. Both the beds and sofa are made from concrete which would be probably be okay if you had decent mattresses on the beds and cushions on the sofa . We literally could not find a comfortable position to watch the tiny TV .

This house is in serious need of proper maintenance and upgrading. The air conditioner in the living room constantly flooded the house. We had to keep a bowl and towels on the floor to catch the water. Missing, knobs on washer dryer, threadbare towels. the list goes on and on.

It really isn't that near the beach. Easy walking distance, but if you wanted to take lawn chairs a cooler, umbrellas, etc. It would be a chore. Don't believe what is said about getting to Tamarindo by beach and water taxi. Not nearly as convenient as is suggested and not possible to get back after dinner at night.

I know the tropics are "buggy" but we to kill a number of huge spiders every time we got in the shower. I always was a little paranoid that they were crawling in bed at night too!!!!

I hesitated to write this review because Mike seems like a nice enough guy. I just dont want anyone else to be misled as I feel we were.. Please e-mail me. I will be more than glad to be honest with you about the good and bad.

Owner's Response: UNFAIR INACCURATE REVIEW…4 Months later! Guest answers her own question by stating that she had “too high of expectations”. Then punishes me for her preconceived idea of what our Costa Rican house should be. My home is a typical Tico style house, hand built with German quality craftsmanship. The entire house is pictured, so there shouldn’t have been any surprises. Her critique is totally exaggerated and mean spirited. She was not “misled” and her “Honest Review” insinuates that myself and all the previous five star reviewers are dishonest. ★ When guests arrive there is more than just beer in the fridge. Cold bottled water, a bowl of tropical fruits and munchies, beautiful orchid plants in the kitchen and each bedroom, are all presented to welcome my guests. ★ I came to the house every morning to clean the pool. If there was a problem with the A/C why wasn’t I informed? I pride myself in correcting any problems immediately. ★ The open-style kitchen is a spacious 200 square feet with a 9 foot long counter and a ten foot high ceiling. Previous guests have cooked in the kitchen and eaten on the large counter with no complaints. Many guests also enjoy using the huge dining table outside on the patio. ★ The natural hardwood cabinets are hand crafted and not cheap. ★ The utensils and dishes are not cheap, in fact, the dishes are new Fiesta Ware type china. ★ Guest was emailed in advance that I was the housekeeper and that we had no dishwasher. ★ The entry gate is varnished local hardwood. Paint would ruin the beauty. ★ Stone driveway is not dirt. ★ The beds are built on traditional cement bases, with a wooden frame that supports a firm, posture-pedic mattress with a 4 inch feather bed topper. The bed is complete with high quality, high thread count sheets and feather down comforters covered with a washable cotton duvet. Past guests love the beds. ★ The towels are all new, plush, hotel quality. ★ The sofas have very thick futon style cotton seats and down feather cushions. ★ The missing knob on the brand new washer/dryer is set intentionally as a safety precaution to prevent over heating. ★ The TV is a brand new 40 inch Sony Flat Panel. ★ The beach is a very, short walk as most previous reviews state. ★ I’ve been a VRBO member since 2010 and this is the first negative review I’ve ever received and I was shocked and deeply hurt, because I strive to offer quality accommodations, emphasizing cleanliness, comfort, and security for each guest.

Mike's Beach House is simply amazing.

He's 200ft from best surf/sand beach you could imagine.

There are 3 awesome local restaurants within easy walking distance.

The house itself is beautiful; a perfect place to hang out by the pool if you've had too much sun.

If you're looking for a relaxing place to stay in this area, and want easy access to everything that makes Costa Rica great; this is your spot.
