About Eric Vollmecke
I'm Eric co-owner of Whippoorwill Manor Farm which part of it has been in our family since 1950. I've traveled to over 155 countries and all the states but believe that this is one of the most beautiful places on earth in a region full of great American history. We strive hard to maintain a park like atmosphere of the home and property. Our friends and extended family love to spend time together here as there is so much to do year round. You never need to leave the property. The farm also grows hops used by local craft brewers. A sample is provided for your enjoyment, my motto, beer not wine!
Eric Vollmecke purchased this Farmhouse in 1980
Why Eric Vollmecke chose Madison
Our family has been enjoying this area since my grandparents purchased the adjacent farm in 1950. In 1980 our father purchased this property and began working his dream to create a 'park like atmosphere' for his family and friends to enjoy. All the barns and buildings were refurbished in the 1990's, and finally in 2004, he began the complete renovation of the farm house. A new wing was added for the baths and the kitchen as prior to this time the house had no running water.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Despite the dramatic growth of the Washington metro area and the expansion of the suburbs, this property remains as quiet and beautiful a place as it was 50 years ago and yet it is only on average 1.5 hours from Washington DC. We are avid hikers and cyclists and we believe there is no better venue for enjoying both in the entire mid-Atlantic region.

We loved staying here. Beautiful building, comfortable beds, beautiful property with nice trails, and so many things available on site for everyone to enjoy! Thank you for sharing your home with us. I hope to come back sometime.
Great destination for family and friends
The home is situated at a beautiful location and it has everything that you may need. We were 4 families and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Will come back again!
Peaceful and beautiful property
Our group enjoyed a fantastic experience. The property is well kept while the area allowed many opportunities for our group to have fun
We keep coming back...
This is my favorite place to stay in the Shenandoah Valley and 5+ stay there. The accommodations are excellent with everything you need and more. It's especially good for church retreats and family vacations (multiple families). This location will not disappoint!
Great host and awesome location. Whippoorwill provides a park like atmosphere for family fun
We had a great time at Whippoorwill, we truly can not recommend it enough. Moreover Eric was a pleasure to coordinate with with very helpful suggestions on things to do in the area. We had planned on spending our time in Shenandoah National Park, however once we arrived we fell in love with the farm and spent most of our time on the property, enjoying private mountain biking trails and the stunning landscape. Overall Whippoorwill is a great location for a family getaway with fun activities available for everyone . Our family will forever hold the time we spent at Whipporwill dear to our hearts.
Traditions worth repeating!
Traditions are an important part of life. In our family, we enjoy certain dishes and meals every Christmas season that each of us looks forward to as we gather for the Holiday. Every summer we get together for a week on a lake in New Hampshire. For the past 5 years, in February, our tradition is a weekend with friends at Whippoorwill Manor Farm.
At Whippoorwill, we share some elaborate meals and have no trouble finding all of the kitchen tools and modern appliances to prepare them.
If you have rented a place with a group before, you know it can be frustrating having to haul your own cooking stuff from home or not finding what you need at your destination. Whippoorwill's well-appointed kitchen makes cooking in this wonderful bucolic environment very pleasant.
Although the original home was built in the 1700's, it has been tastefully added to, remodeled and updated for modern day cozy comfort. The house and rooms are all warm and welcoming. The property easily sleeps 16 for a large family gathering but we usually share the weekend with five or six couples.
There is a certain comfort and relaxation that comes from knowing a property will have all the features we've grown to appreciate; meticulously clean rooms, comfortable furniture, and tasteful art in an uncluttered environment. Each year, a new enhancement becomes part of the property; one year a sauna, another year the conversion of an outbuilding into a game room, two years ago some new mountain bikes, last year an outdoor ping pong table, and this year a new slate patio outside of the kitchen. There are also many marked trails on the property that are cleared to make passage easier. If one were to walk all of them they'd total up to be about the same distance and vertical rise as a hike on nearby Old Rag Mountain!
There is beauty in tradition whether it is newly formed or comes from origins in the past. Whippoorwill Manor Farm's combination of past and present is the perfect setting to form your own traditions!
Over four miles on hiking and mountain biking trails on the property to include a trail that leads to the second highest point in Madison County with a great view of Old Rag Mountain.
