Rutherford Island is the quintessential Maine coastal getaway--sea views all around, glittering night skies, perfect summer temperatures. When you return home from antiquing, touring, sailing or other salty sports, enjoy a glass of wine on the deck while you watch the sun set over Christmas Cove, listen to the waves crashing on Johns Bay, and stare at the amazing night stars and Milky Way. Do bring your telescope!
We have an apartment above the garage that may also be rented, please contact owner for details.

Though we live in Virginia much of the year, we eagerly await summers in Maine. We are often in residence in the other home on the compound and would be happy to answer any questions guests may have. While Leo is retired from government service, Bobbee is still active in real estate in VA. Leo is a sailing, golf and model airplane enthusiast. Bobbee enjoys oil painting and swimming. Both of us love to share our enthusiasm for the area with visitors!
Bobbee Cardillo purchased this cottage in 2009
We visited friends in Christmas Cove for many years and were always eager to return, as we loved the sea, the sailboats and the peacefulness of the area. In 2009 we had an opportunity to purchase the perfect property in the perfect location, directly across from the Cove. Now we look forward to driving through the quaint town of South Bristol to our perfect island getaway.
Crossing the swing bridge onto Rutherford Island and driving a mile, past the church and through the woods to the property, you will immediately relax. Here you can listen to the sea and experience nature with a Rachel Carson sense of wonder.
This is a wonderful place to spend a relaxing vacation. Bobbie and Leo are great hosts and the property is clean, comfortable and very accommodating. Beautiful views, modern amenities and everything that you need to relax and enjoy. Just bring food or dine out in some amazing and convenient restaurants. We highly recommend this as a great place to vacation. We would ABSOLUTELY stay here if we visit this area again. 5 stars plus, plus.

We loved our first visit to Christmas Cove! Perfect rental for family with two teenagers. Can't wait to come back.
There aren't many spots on Rutherford Island with a water view both east and west, but this is one. The house is finished and furnished very nicely and comfortably and the owners couldn't have been more helpful.
To sit by the cottage's front bay windows - or stand on the deck - to watch the late-day sun slowly descend over the Cove as it puts on a nightly show of ever-changing hues of beautiful blues, purples, pinks, yellows and oranges, or to look up into the quiet, starfilled night skies of this magical Maine landscape, or to join the morning's welcome of the new day's sun with its bright invitation of another day in paradise - this is what I see in my mind's photo album of my stay at the Christmas Cove Cottage. Comfy, spacious and spotless, with all the t's crossed and the i's dotted, it was evident that pride of ownership and a congenial and always helpful but never intrusive manner on the part of Bobbee and Leo were very much the order of the day. Want to know where to go for the best Maine lobster? or a swim? or a whale-watching cruise? Or even a bridge game? Just ask. And as for swimming, a quarter mile stroll or bike ride through the neighborhood ends at the local beach where, yes, on sunny days I loved to swim.
The accommodations are superior, as is the ocean view from the kitchen window and even the upstairs extra bedroom. Morning coffee on the deck competed with afternoon tea back on the deck again as a favorite personal passtime. The ocean waves crashing in and flowing back out with her reassuring dependability and ever picturesque scenes of sailboats just off shore or farther out into John's Bay - it just couldn't have gotten any better. Truly an artist's painting come to life.
