Life goes a little bit slower when you enter Mendocino County, mainly because of the winding roads! Shalimere is located west of Highway 1 on the 'ocean side' of the Irish Beach community, well sited to provide maximum privacy.
The real vacation starts when you open the door to Shalimere. Hang your keys on the coat rack and walk into the living room. Take a minute to gaze out the front windows at the glorious Pacific Ocean. Open the sliding glass door leading onto the deck and step outside and listen to the waves breaking about 75 yards away. Take 3 deep breaths and your vacation has officially begun. Your next decision is only necessary if you have brought perishables or your pet. Put the perishables in refrigerator or freezer. Take your pet for a walk, whichever has the most immediate need. (probably the pet!)
Bedroom decision time is easy if its adults and children. The adults get the Master bedroom, the kids get the other. If it's all grown ups then a flip of the coin, 'rock, scissors, paper' or drawing straws may be necessary. Both bedrooms have luxury sheets and down alternative comforters with duvet covers and bathrobes. Bathrooms have Aveda salon hair products (not to be confused with Aveeno) and full size hair dryers. (A few less things to pack!) After deciding---settle in.
Shalimere is pet friendly. There is a large indoor kennel, a large dog bed, plus dog sheets and towels if you have couch potato or bed warmers, along with pet bowls for water and food, plus a few dog toys should you forget. There is a deck around 75% of the house with gates at both ends. BE SURE TO LET US KNOW WHEN YOU MAKE AN INQUIRY IF YOUR FURRY FAMILY MEMBER IS ALSO COMING SO WE CAN RESPOND AND PLAN ACCORDINGLY. (Please note, the deck is not baby or pet 'proof') If you bring your pet, we ask you leave the house in the same condition (pet hair, nose prints and paw prints removed) as it is upon arrival. We currently do not charge extra fees pets but have recently had some very hairy/sandy and muddy experiences that required a lot of extra cleaning time. Please respect the house.
The hot tub is ready whenever you are. There are robes in both bedrooms closets if you have forgotten your own. You might want to bring slippers, just in case.
There are many magazines to peruse. Playing cards, several classic board games, jigsaw puzzles, plus seashell guide, hiking guide, kayak guide, tidepool guide, 2016 tide chart , bird books and more. We also have an 'out and about book' for local activities information and keep the monthly Mendocino County Tourist newspaper. Our large flat screen smart TV is hooked up to the Dish Network so you can stay up-to-date with the local major networks, plus CNN, ESPN, TNT with 190 stations or listen to the music channels with a huge variety to choose from. The house has wifi for basic use (checking email). It does not work for streaming or gaming.
The soapstone gas fireplace starts with just a flip of the switch on the side. We call it 'instant ambiance'.
Shalimere is easy to just stay in and enjoy. If you want to head out to the private beach and are up for a rigorous walk down and back, then go for it! Or you can easily drive down the same gate accessed private drive. After all, this is your vacation! The beach is nearly 5 miles long, depending on the tide. Sometimes you have it completely to yourself. You might see a few people. It is only for Irish Beach residents & guests so you may meet a kindred soul. The surf can be mighty - so be watchful. (Because of the strong riptide, water activities are not for the inexperienced)
In the surrounding 25 miles you can find all sorts of diversions, enjoyment, pampering and even giraffes, zebras and other african animals. Exploring the nearby towns can yield many treasures and pleasures. The main thing is to enjoy yourself--have a wonderful time and plan to come back again soon.
Everyone loves a bright sunny day, but there are those of us who love watching whale migrations (or signing up with one of the nearby whale watching groups) or just relaxing on the huge couch with a book with the gas fired soapstone fireplace roaring with heat! The rain and the fog are not deterrents to having a great day. Winter is my personal favorite to watch the storms and to see the whales migrating.
Check out this amazing house at an incredible rate any time of the year. Shalimere is the exception within the Irish Beach community and is the best price house WEST of Highway 1. (There is a difference being on the Ocean Side of Irish Beach!)
There is no 'high or low' pricing. Exceptionally well priced year round. Please note, because I am "independent", my prices are better than those offered by the local rental agencies. The 'free' days they offer with various stays end up the same or more than my home after you add in their "up charges", higher cleaning fees, pet fees, non refundable damage fees, etc. Please consider the real overall charges when making a decision.
Experience the difference of a caring owner with an on-site manager who lives 5 minutes away.
Come enjoy the days on the wild Mendocino coast as summer beckons or for the amazing days of fall, the real 'summer' on the coast. Winters bring incredible weather both rainy and sunny. Nothing like watching the storm roll in while warm and comfy in the house. Shalimere is enjoyable no matter what time of year or the weather. We keep individual ice creams in the freezer for your pleasure. Read the reviews and see how our guests are treated and feel about the house. The pictures do not do this house justice!
(Please note, I keep the availability calendar up to date. VRBO does not show 'pending' listings. I usually hold requested days for 48 hours and then update/remove if I don't hear back or receive the deposit)
Current pending dates as of 22 September 2016:
4-6 November 2016
VRBO also 'encourages' the use of credit cards for payment. On top of the annual fee I pay to VRBO to list my home, they now receive a generous commission and VRBO will add it directly to your rental cost. Therefore the cost you are billed to your credit card will not match the amount on your rental agreement. Just an FYI. If you do not wished to be charged to your credit card, do not enter your credit card information. You can still inquire about availability without inputting this information.
There are no fees with personal cheques or cash/Venmo payments. You can read my reviews and see there has never been any comment or complaint regarding my payment policy. I am also happy to spread payments over time prior to your arrival to help accommodate a longer stay. No one has ever said they stayed too long! Most people say, "Next time we will plan to stay a few days extra".

Another trip around the sun and it's time to go back up to Shalimere. I had been visiting Irish Beach for over 20 years and finally decided to take the plunge to buy and do my own vacation rental. I did most of the sweat equity work and added the center island and with custom stainless stove surround, added a new the soapstone gas fireplace, 'on demand' hot water, replaced the tired pink carpet with new wood floors. I got to strip off wallpaper, scrub walls, paint, paint and paint. Tired of the hassles and high agency fees with the local rental agency, I lowered the rate and went independent. I love this home and wish to share it with others.
Lorie Brand Shepard purchased this house in 2007
Location? Views? Well, it was both! I love the octagonal shape of the front of the house with all the windows and the fabulous views. Basically it just needed a some updating to make it work better. (Goodbye carpet, hello bamboo!) Just far enough from 'the City/SF' yet close to 'the Village/Mendocino'. Also perfect to just stay 'home' and chill in the hot tub. As a dog owner, it has a great deck set up to keep the pooches safe from the wilds and they can still march around and check out what's going on or just snooze in the sun. The private beach is also a great asset. Put it all together and you have a perfect vacation home location.
Peace, quiet, ocean view enjoyed best from the hot tub with a glass of wine. Personally I love the fog so I don't get too worked up about the weather. Great star gazing also with our star scope! Nice big couch to lounge on. Center Island has stove with ocean view and seating to keep everyone busy helping or chatting. A self admitted caffeine addict, there are FIVE different ways to get your fix: the keurig, mr coffe drip, a french press, the espresso machine or the melita individual drip cones. Bring some pods for the espresso machine to save you the trouble of grinding and packing it up and cleaning it afterward. Or some K cups and voila!
Satellite TV provides a variety of music or channels for those who cannot live without. Comfy deck chairs with cushions for sun worshipers. I have been known to sit in the hot tub with an umbrella if it is raining. It's an invigorating walk down to the private beach--not for the faint of heart. Personally, I walk, but you can easily drive down and take a long walk on the beach and live to tell about it.
A fantastic view - that made this my most memorable birthday ever. We enjoyed the hot tub and the serenity, peace and relaxation of this community. Our only visitors were several deer, and we were constantly serenaded by the local birds. The telescope was a great item too.
Thank you very much.
Such an quaint, beautiful, comfortable, picturesque stay at Shalimere. Loved walking into the beamed-rotunda ceiling. Lorie really makes you [and our dog] feel welcome and right at home. Access to the private beach was amazing on such a gorgeous, sunny day. Definitely drive north to Elk for a bite to eat and a stop into the local art gallery was great. Driving south to Manchester along the cyprus-lined scenic drive for some thai food was nice too. Lorie's got this thing down to a science - thank you!!
House was clean
Linens and towels were well stocked
Kitchen appliances, cooking utensils and basic ingredients were in ample supply
Loved the telescope
Hot tub was great
Clothes in the washer and dryer
Your handyman (Jeff) asking if I was a renter or (who?) Did appreciate the interruption
My wife and I stayed at this house five nights in May, 2015. This review has been on my to-do list since then. Shalimere was truly a wonderful place to stay. The house is in a terrific location, very clean, nicely furnished and incredibly well equipped, especially the kitchen. The house is located in a very quiet and private neighborhood and has very nice water views. The nearby beach offers miles of driftwood and solitude. Lorie, the owner, was extremely friendly and easy to work with. Clearly, this is house is a source of pride and joy for her and she is very gracious in her genuine desire to share all that it has to offer with her tenants. The location is excellent. Short drives gets you to Point Arena to the south and Mendocino to the north. And, while we enjoyed cooking in Lorie's fabulous kitchen, we did enjoy a very good dinner out at Uneda Eat in Point Arena. Great food and very comfortable atmosphere. Thanks, Lorie, for a wonderful visit. We look forward to returning sometime soon.
The beds and bedding were amazing. So quiet, so comfy. The kitchen was very well equipped with anything we could think of that we needed to use. There were extras of everything, so it was very easy to keep everything in order. When the owner says dog friendly, SHE MEANS IT. I think our dog had more amenities than we did even! The decor is appropriate and tasteful, and there are all kinds of thoughtful extras that you wouldn't know you wanted until you find it there waiting for you!
We spent the weekend with friends, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. From the living room, we watched humpbacked whales spouting (and saw an identifiable flipper!) through the provided telescope. We enjoyed the hot tub with stars and an almost-full moon. We explored Bowling Ball Beach (and lost our car key - which somebody else found and left on the sign post for us!), had lunch at the cove at Point Arena (and saw an otter!), visited the Point Arena light house (and climbed all 145 steps, had amazing views, and saw seals), and even got to see the Green Flash at sunset from a vista point just south.
We had such a fun stay!
Although it has been several months since our time, I am still dreaming of Shalimere! As I look back on 2015, one my favorite memories is our family vacation (2 adults - 2 children - 1 dog) at Shalimere. As I contemplate vacation time for 2016, Shalimere is at the top of that list. As mentioned by others, Lorie and Julie were great. Shalimere is cozy, comfortable, and accommodating. Irish Beach is beautiful, and access to the beach is great. We hope to return to Shalimere!
Lorie the owner was very gracious and let us update reservation at last minute and was very easy to work with. We loved the location and view and the house was very friendly and clean. Thanks for a wonderful anniversary weekend and the welcome basket.
Shalimere is located in Irish Beach which has a beautiful 5 mile private beach. A rigorous hike down or easy drive through a gated access. Great beach for strolling, beach combing, tide pool adventuring with lots of driftwood. Hiking nearby and guidebooks in house. Most activities are in the village of Mendocino itself or Fort Bragg. Mendocino Film festival every May, plus crab season specials. Mendocino Art Center has plays and has an incredible art gallery. Lots of wonderful places to eat nearby to the north in Elk, Little River, Mendocino and Ft Bragg or south in Point Arena, Gualala/Sea Ranch.

All the VRBO houses at Irish Beach have damage deposit or a flat rate fee, plus cleaning fees and/or pet fees.
The VRBO "Book it Now" system has double booked my house repeatedly, so I no longer offer that service.
Refundable damage deposit is $250/$350 with pets.
I prefer cheques as the VRBO credit card system charges me excessively high fees.
Refundable damage deposit is returned promptly if no incident.
There is an additional $25 cleaning fee for more than 2 pets.
