About Vanessa

My husband, John, and I have lived on Mt Desert Island for nearly 40 years. I landed my dream job seven years ago as head gardener at Thuya Garden, a beautiful English border garden in Northeast Harbor. John is a building contractor and has built many beautiful shingle style homes on the island. We love to travel in our Scamp Camper that we've nicknamed 'Shrimp Scampi'.

Vanessa purchased this townhome in 1989

Why Vanessa chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

We fell in love with this beautiful property and incredible location in 1989. John built Garden Court for my mother when she retired to Maine. We now rent the ground floor of her home and we live upstairs. Garden Court sits on one acre of land along a private driveway in a quiet neighborhood. Check out the beautiful sunsets from Beech Hill or hike Acadia National Park trails just one mile away. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have, please call 207-244-4090. Priscilla Hutton.

Also, please feel free to call my daughter in law, Vanessa, who helps me with all aspect of Garden Court (207)266-0149.

What makes this townhome unique

Great family location. Perfect for couples or friends traveling together. Easy access to our island's best swimming beaches and adventures into Acadia. Garden Court guests enjoy fishing and carry-in canoe/kayak launching privileges at exclusive Somesville Town Dock. Bring your mackerel gear and squid jigs!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The "C" family came and conquered MDI for the 4th straight year at Garden Court. I once again thank you.... for allowing us to stay here for our summer vacation. Between getting up to see the sunrise and jigging for squid till 1 am - I think I need a vacation now! Sorry we missed you at the Gardens - we just didn't make it over there this year. John - I owe you some squid next year - my family wolfed them all down. Bruce - good luck getting the mini-bike going. Jonah wants to ride it. We truly feel this is our home away from home and look forward to coming back."

Peaceful, Homey Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Gardencourt with 3 friends from West Virginia. It was easy to find once we got into the area. Gardencourt was clean and welcoming. The home was lovely and the area was safe and peaceful. It was comfortable and had everything you could possible need. It's always great to have a washer/dryer when on vacation! The owners were friendly and the location was perfect for everything we wanted to do.

Perfect Place and Location! No matter the purpose of your trip!

  • 5 of 5

No matter why you have come to visit this beautiful area, you will find this home perfectly suits all of your needs. Our group of four came to photograph the Mount Desert Island region, in particular, Acadia NP, we were looking for something outside of the bustling Bar Harbor area and closer to the park. Did we ever choose the perfect place! This house is located in Somesville, close to the iconic and often photographed Selectman’s arched footbridge and a scenic harbor. It is roomy with all the conveniences of home, the neighborhood quiet and peaceful, everything you could possibly want is within a 20 minute drive, from Acadia’s Cadillac Mountain, to the busy storefronts, restaurants, and activity filled streets of Bar Harbor, after a long day of visiting nearby attractions, it was a joy to be able to retreat to the restful solitude that Garden Court has to offer. And…rest assured this house has all of the little things that most people forget such as laundry and dishwasher detergent, coffee filters, etc, saving us both money and vehicle space, since we did not have haul back items that were only purchased for a week’s stay. Priscilla and John were excellent hosts and made sure our every need was met. You will have no worries when you stay at Garden Court! I must say if you are planning on coming to this area, June is definitely the month to come and this is the place to stay!

Beech Hill Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in Gardencourt for the first time this season, and our experience was over the top. The rental had everything we needed, including privacy. The difference between Somesville and Bar Harbor was night and day. After the hustle and bustle of town, we could not wait to get back to Gardencourt's quiet seclusion. We were a hop, skip, and a jump away from the town dock, where we rented kayaks! We will be staying here on our next trip to Maine. Hopefully the rental is available!!

Wonderful spot!

  • 5 of 5

John, Priscilla and Suze (manager) were all wonderful and very responsive and helpful.

The house is tucked away in a nice neighborhood and as other reviews mentioned, it is in a very quiet and peaceful setting. It is clean, comfortable and spacious with everything you need. Nice kitchen, great washer/dryer.

Getting to Bar Harbor can take up to 20-25 minutes with traffic during the busier times. There are wonderful hikes and interesting things to do on this side of MDI, so no need to drive to the other side all the time.

All in all, a lovely spot for a wonderful vacation!

A truly once in a lifetime experience.

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with my boyfriend in June for 9 days. I echo the peace and quiet sentiments. If you traveled one way you had access to the Beech Mountain Trails. The other direction offered a short drive to rent canoes on Long Pond. The location of the house is fantastic. Only 15 minutes to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, and less for surrounding villages like Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor, Northwest Harbor etc. The drive to Bangor was only 45 minutes and we took a couple of road trips just to go exploring. There was no shortage of places to hike, walk, canoe, kayak, climb and you could get right out of the car and touch the ocean on multiple occasions. A photographer's dream.

The house itself is spectacular. The kitchen is well stocked with essentials for cooking, and the living area warm and cozy and open. Perfect for visiting while preparing meals. The bedrooms were perfect with comfortable beds and plenty of space. We even unpacked our suitcases into the dressers provided. It truly felt like home. John and Priscilla were lovely hosts and offered wonderful advice on things to do and traveling times.

We purchased groceries in Southwest Harbor and also went to the Beech Hill Farm Stand where there was a lovely selection of fresh and homemade goods. Perfect for a quick run or for a big shop. People were so friendly and we interacted with many locals.

Overall, this place is fantastic and highly recommended for a laid back wonderful Maine vacation. I couldn't recommend this place more. We will definitely be back!

Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here while my daughter was on the island attending a week long camp. It was absolutely fantastic. Peace and quiet and far enough away from the road not to hear the traffic (which is light, anyway). Within easy driving distance to the Park and to Bar Harbor. The rooms are large enough, and the full kitchen and grill was great to cook in versus eating out (groceries are nearby in Southwest Harbor). There's plenty of hiking to do in the area within 10 minutes, and Beech Hill Farms is right down the road. It's also cool enough during the day and at night, the provided quilts and blankets were an added plus. The owner accepts pets (I brought my dog). Because he wouldn't take "No" from staying off the furniture, I didn't mind not getting back the full deposit, and if I travel to MDI again, would stay again if given the opportunity.
