Why Eileen MacLean chose Cape Breton Island

Centrally located to all amenities in Baddeck, the beginning and the end of the Cabot Trail. (Please see photos)

BREATHTAKING AT EVERY TURN... AND THEN SOME.

Awe-inspiring…Dramatic...Magnificent! Lonely Planet named it one of the best road trips in the world. How would you describe it? One of the most famous drives in Canada, the Cabot Trail is a spectacular highway carved into the cliffs of the Cape Breton Highlands, with views that defy description and gravity. But that’s only part of your journey in the place we call Cape Breton Island, the place Travel + Leisure magazine named the number one island destination in all of North America. But we knew that already.

What makes this cottage unique

Enjoy the peace and privacy of your own home away from home, for the cost of a hotel room. Have a culinary flair? Create some wonderful meals from local fresh seafood and produce. Fancy a steak? Grab some beautiful steaks from the Co-Op (no finer cuts anywhere) and fire up the BBQ. Eat in or eat out at any one of the many fine and casual dining restaurants the village of Baddeck has to offer. Stroll the lovely shops and boutiques on Chebucto Street. Explore super natural Kidston Island with it's famous lighthouse and beaches. Walk to the grocery store, Liquor, beer & wine store and to any one of the local churches.

For lovers of the great outdoors, enjoy a day on the links at one of the areas spectacular golf courses or go fly fishing on one of the regions scenic rivers. Fishing licences may be purchased locally in Baddeck. If you enjoy water sports, Baddeck is on the Bras D' Or lakes, Canada,s inland sea, a series of tidal lakes accessible from the Atlantic ocean at Big Bras D' Or or at St. Peters Canal. For those who like to hunt, check out the Department of Natural Resources website for species and seasons. http://novascotia.ca/natr/hunt/

If you are a budding or professional photographer, painter, naturalist, hiker or skier you have come to one of the premier destinations anywhere. Add a heaping portion of Cape Breton's world famous hospitality and you will enjoy the vacation of a lifetime.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Eileen,

Thank you for letting us rent your cottage. We enjoyed our stay in and around Baddeck. The weather was perfect. This is a beautiful place and we hope to be back again.

We picked up around the cabin, but it still needs some tidying. We left a few things in the fridge and on top of the stove that you might be able to use including some greens, garlic flowers, and a chicken. All were bought fresh on Wednesday at the farmer's market. I hope you can enjoy them.

Thank you for help and hospitality. We really enjoyed our stay and the cottage was perfect!

Warm Regards- Beth & Mark

Cozy, convenient cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is a compact, comfortable little cottage in a very convenient location. The kitchen is well equipped and clean, and the living room is furnished with comfortable sofas and chairs. The bedrooms are small but comfortable. The front rooms in the house get lovely morning light. It was nice to have the free wifi to plan the daytime trips. The cottage is within walking distance to a grocery store, several restaurants, banks, a bakery, the waterfront and even to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. We are returning to this little cottage again this year.

Everything You Need in this Baddeck Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a charming, clean, comfortable and nicely-appointed place to stay in the heart of Baddeck Village, this cottage is a great choice. With two bedrooms, fully-equipped kitchen, tidy bathroom, fresh linens, laundry room, cheerful bright living room, and an outdoor backyard dining area and barbeque, our family really enjoyed our stay! This pleasant cottage is private and perfectly located as a home-base for walking access to local restaurants, shops, cafes and the Bras d’Or Lake waterfront, and easy day trips along the Cabot Trail, into Sydney or on to the Nova Scotia mainland. Hosts Eileen and Arnie are friendly and available to help meet your rental needs and make your stay just right. We look forward to our next visit because this Cozy Cottage has all that one needs to relax and take in the beauty that is Cape Breton.

Disappointed

  • 2 of 5

We stayed in this cottage for 1 full week and were disappointed with the overall condition of the house. First of all it is 700 sq. feet and not 900 sq. feet as indicated in VRBO listing. It is located on the main road into Baddeck and has a noisy view of a garage. The inside was not very clean, no room to sit comfortable, certainly not 6 people around kitchen table, we were 4 and could not sit around table. Fireplace is non- working, just a facade,.bathroom extremely small and no room for towels, toiletries, etc. After notifying the owner about all the discreptiences and lack of cleanliness, it would have been a nice gesture if the owner would have offered a partial refund? Would not rent this house again nor would we recommend it to anyone...

Owner's Response: We were surprised and disappointed to read the foregoing review, the first one of this nature. I visited these guests on their second day in the cottage and there was no mention of any issues, they seemed quite happy. It was only after they had completed their week and left that I received an email offering this review. This is a summer rental (fireplace?) It is a 2 BR cottage with a futon if there are extra guests. It is not on the main road into Baddeck but they stayed during Regatta Week, the busiest week of the year so there would have been more traffic than usual. The cottage is cleaned meticulously after each guest so I can't explain that one. Hard to offer any compensation after they have left! Apparently their whole vacation was a disaster and we were unfortunate enough to be their last stop. They have vowed never to return to Cape Breton as nothing here pleased them. We don't wish to sound insensitive to this review but we feel that it is inaccurate and unfair. The streets of Baddeck are alive every summer with happy, satisfied holidaymakers who enjoy what the village and elsewhere in Cape Breton has to offer. Very few, I would guess, echo these guests' sentiments.

The Village of Baddeck is at the beginning and end of the world famous Cabot Trail, one of the most scenic drives in the world. Baddeck is home to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, a Parks Canada site. The museum houses many of Mr. Bell's life works and also the Silver Dart, the first manned aeroplane flown in the British Empire in February of 1909. The Bell's summer home 'Beinn Breagh' is located in Baddeck and is still owned by the Bell descendants today. Bell Bay Golf Club is located in Baddeck and is recognized as one of the top golf courses in Canada. Baddeck is also noted for it's many fine restaurants and local entertainment.

Baddeck is pretty much the geographical centre of Cape Breton and is an ideal launching point for daytrips and island exploration in general. You can take sail boat cruises from the town wharf in baddeck aboard the Amoeba with it's entertaining Captain John. Food and beverages are served onboard. There are beaches and walking trails on Kidston Island, accessible by a shuttle operated by one of the local service clubs.

Baddeck also has grocery stores, a liquor, wine and beer outlet, restaurants, pubs and fine dining establishments all within walking distance from the Blue House. Protestant and Roman Catholic churches are also only a short walk. Victoria County Memorial Hospital is located in Baddeck also.

There are nature trails and hiking trails for all fitness levels and ages. You can buy live lobster and fresh fish from any number of small fishing villages that dot the region.
