Already planning to go back!

  • 5 of 5

My family started talking about going back to the Homestead before our vacation was over! Our 8 y.o. twins loved playing on the huge protected beach with such variation of high and low tide and a short run from the house (digging, hermit crabbing, swimming). The sunsets were DIVINE (and I'll admit, we didn't make it up in time to see the sunrises, which I hear are great too!). The house is well stocked in the kitchen and accomodations and very comfortable. The location is quiet and relaxing, and you can easily get to nearby attractions if you are looking for more activity to occupy your time. The Johnson family is super friendly and helpful, you will definitely feel "at home" in their home at the Homestead. Looking forward to booking 2017 soon!

A wonderful glimpse of Maine life

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, with our 17 year old daughter and 7 year old son, stayed at the Homestead for 1 week in July and THOROUGHLY enjoyed ourselves. The accommodations were excellent - comfortable furniture throughout the house and everything you could possibly need was already there in the cupboards and closets of every room. With Bailey Island being the furthest island south, after Great Island and Orr's Island, the tourist traffic was minimal except for the Land's End shoppers. Travelling to Portland and the Boothbay area was still only an hours drive - where we visited several lighthouses, the cryptozoology museum, the Maine aquarium and Cap N Fish Cruises to see the puffins. In the evening the sunsets in the front yard over Mount Washington were beautiful and during the day you could see working lobster boats pull traps and watch the Casco Bay ferry come and go from the same front windows. The private tidal cove was by far everyone's favorite place and where we spent a majority of our time - the sea shells, sea glass and rose quartz collected by all of us are treasures now in our upstate New York home. Nothing beats the fresh lobsters delivered daily by David - they were FANTASTIC!!! The friendliness of the Johnson family helped make this our best family vacation yet - We fully intend to return for another week next year!

Johnson Homestead was perfect for our family.

  • 5 of 5

There were 8 of us - 6 adults and two children. The four bedrooms were perfect. The listing description was as accurate as described. The rooms had plenty of space for all of us. With two young children, we cooked many meals at the house. We found everything we needed. The yard was terrific with the shade tree, picnic table, slide and swing. We were able to easily carry our kayaks to launch on both sides of the island. The boys played at Little Harbor for hours. The house and yard were clean and well-maintained. David was very friendly and helpful. A highlight for our 5-year-old grandson and his dad was going out on David's lobster boat to haul some traps. One of the best things about Johnson Homestead was the connection with the history of the family that lived there. We enjoyed a trip to Freeport, taking in a Sea Dogs baseball game and brewery tour in Portland, the beach at Reid State Park, morning walks, the sunsets, shopping at Lands End and Reny's, and RELAXING! I highly recommend this property and we hope to return. This was our 14th vacation rental along the coast of Maine - our best one yet!

Beautiful Sunsets and Semi-Private Beach

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the Johnson Homestead with our two boys and another family with two boys. It's a great spot for families. The beach is just a minute walk and the yard has a slide and swing. The sunsets in the front of the house are AMAZING! The beach is super convenient and extra fabulous when you rent kayaks. The kids had a great time climbing on the rocks, playing in the water and kayaking. David was great to rent from. He took us on his lobster boat and we were able to see him pull up and bait the lobster traps. A super fun treat for all of us! And, better yet, he was just a text a way to order lobsters. The lobsters were the best we have ever eaten!! You didn't even want to put butter on them. A great family experience and we're already looking forward to going back!

Great time!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd year on Bailey Island. We also have family in Maine, so travel there frequently. We came as a family of 4, and had rotating family members staying throughout the week. The house was much bigger than we've been in, and comfortably fit 8 people (those 2 bathrooms were wonderful!). The house was well equipped and had everything we needed. Dave really does deliver lobster and we had ours delivered daily - with the best price on the island from what we could tell!!! The beach is a little further from the house (quick walk through the yard, around some bushes) than we'd hoped for, but that certainly didn't stop us from swimming and kayaking in the beautiful, protected cove! You can also kayak out to the waves and enjoy that paddle. The sunset view from the front of the house (across the street) is breathtaking. We highly recommend calling Rings Marina in Freeport for kayak rentals. They DELIVER and still beat the local H2O prices. If you are looking for tandem kayaks, call well before your trip to reserve them. You can cancel with no issues.

The house was an easy walk to the Lands End store at the end of the island. It's a quick drive to Giant's Stairs rocks to climb on. Dave also took many of us out on his lobster boat, pulled traps, and had a great time! There was a group of wild turkeys that visited in the mornings, traveling through the yard. The neighbors really are as nice as the other reviewers say, even giving us the local history and providing an extra table for us. The meteor showers were a nice touch as we watched them from the front yard. This was the relaxing trip we were looking for! Thanks Dave!

Bailey Island Homestead is a wonderful place !

  • 5 of 5

The island is the perfect place to get away and relax! the quaint comfortable ranch is clean and airy. Loads of room for a large family . The front window overlooks the bays that provides beautiful sunrise and stunning sunsets. There is a large back yard to entertain while children enjoy the slide and swing set.

The is a rocky cove named Little Harbor behind the Homestead that provides

hermit crabs and sea shells at low tide. Dave the owner is very welcoming and accommodating to any needs you may have, Lets not forget Myron and Myra the mascot seagulls that will entertain you with their antics!! Our family had a wonderful and restful visit! Recommend it highly!!

Bailey Island is the last in a series of picturesque islands connected to the mainland by three bridges, the last of which is the famous 'Cribstone Bridge'. It is about a twenty minute drive down Rte 24 from Cooks Corner in Brunswick. People considering staying on Bailey Island, but unfamiliar with the area may wish to note the following:There are grocery stores, shopping malls, a cinema, major chain and numerous local restaurants /retail outlets, fitness centers, medical facilities (including two hospitals), golf courses, Bowdoin College, Bath Maritime Museum, and, and other attractions within a half hour drive in the Brunswick/Topsham/Bath area.

Freeport, the home to LLBean, is a 45 minute drive while Portland is about a one hour drive away.

While you may just want to relax and enjoy the beauty of Bailey Island, the region offers a variety of sights, activities, and resources for our guests.
