We loved the fact that your house was a single story, it made it so much easier on Mom and my aunt. The location was perfect for relaxing and catching up with family. We had the most gracious hosts, they were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again!
Love the view from the living room. Back yard view of the cove is outstanding. Short walk to land's end and giant's stairs. House is a little retro but comfortable.
Will be back to this special hidden gem in Maine!
My wife and I wanted a quiet comfortable getaway on the Maine coast and that is exactly what we got. We stayed in the home of an old time lobsterman managed by his son David, also a lobsterman. David is most engaging, friendly and will bring you lobster any day at off the boat prices. We took full advantage of his services and enjoyed our fill of fresh Maine lobster three times. You could have lobster every day if you wanted.
The home is clean and spacious. It seems like a memorial to his father with lobster memorabilia all over and it is decorated circa 1970...some things 1950. Some might call it old but we experienced retro. This is very affordable, comfortable and we were not disappointed.
The location is truly one of the best spots on the island. From the front picture window sunsets were great every night. Such a great spot that folks regularly stop each evening to take pictures. In the back of the property is the semi private "Little Harbor." We enjoyed just sitting by the water and enjoyed skipping rocks and looking for shells and sea glass.
Low key and relaxing is how I would describe this experience. Luxury it was not. You'll have to pay at least double for that on Bailey Island. We drove the area and saw lots of beautiful multi-million dollar real estate, walked the path to the "Giant Stairs", enjoyed a ride on the two-masted schooner "Alert" and hung out at Cooks Lobster and Ale House all without leaving this island community.
If you are looking to experience “Maine, The way life should be,” then this is the place for you.
This was our first trip to Maine, and we couldn't have picked a better spot to take a vacation. David Johnson is, hands down, the best owner I have ever dealt with in my many, many HomeAway rentals. He made sure we had a pack and play and high chair for our baby granddaughter, and checked in several times to make sure everything was going OK and to see if we needed anything. He was more than accommodating, and obviously loves the area and this house in particular, and sincerely wanted to make sure we had a great trip. The house was very clean and extremely well-equipped, I don't think there was a single thing that we needed that wasn't available. The area is also very safe, and would be great for a young family, or for a group of adults. The backyard and beach at the little cove in back were great places to sit and enjoy the beautiful, cool Maine weather, and the views from both front and back are just incredible It's about 30 minutes to the nearest good sized shopping area, but from there it's an easy drive to any of the great little towns and points of interest along the southern Maine coast. The little general store is about a mile down the road, and does a great job with pizzas and sandwiches, as well as some of those little essentials, and I thought their lobster rolls were the best of all the ones I sampled during the week at multiple different places. There are some really good, casual restaurants close by, and of course the seafood is fresh! Overall, I think we got very luck with this rental, and if we can ever return to Maine, this will be the spot for us!
My husband, son and I had a wonderful time staying at The Johnson homestead. The home was supplied with everything you could need.
This is my second visit and look forward to next summer when we visit Maine again.
Bailey Island is the last in a series of picturesque islands connected to the mainland by three bridges, the last of which is the famous 'Cribstone Bridge'. It is about a twenty minute drive down Rte 24 from Cooks Corner in Brunswick. People considering staying on Bailey Island, but unfamiliar with the area may wish to note the following:There are grocery stores, shopping malls, a cinema, major chain and numerous local restaurants /retail outlets, fitness centers, medical facilities (including two hospitals), golf courses, Bowdoin College, Bath Maritime Museum, and, and other attractions within a half hour drive in the Brunswick/Topsham/Bath area.
Freeport, the home to LLBean, is a 45 minute drive while Portland is about a one hour drive away.
While you may just want to relax and enjoy the beauty of Bailey Island, the region offers a variety of sights, activities, and resources for our guests.
